Gentlecat: what about new JIRA backups ? any option to save to S3 or the like ?
ruaok
ok, onward to dev priorities.
TOPIC: MetaBrainz Community and Development channel | MusicBrainz non-development: #musicbrainz | MeB meeting agenda: dev priorities (ruaok), EU & cookies (ruaok), making JIRA votes public (chirlu)
another thing that happened last week was interviewing a new supporter relationship manager person.
this was BizDev, but since a lot of things I needed help with are done, I'm redefining the role.
and keeping it simpler with only one hat.
Freso gives her the stamp of approval as well, so hopefully we can close that deal soon.
next, I want to talk about hiring a new dev.
bitmap needs help, so we need a perl coder.
Freso
Well, from one meeting with her, sure. :)
Gentlecat
zas: I didn't look into that
I imagine you can just copy files there
ruaok
and MBS-1806 also looms on the horizon as well. I need to review where we stand there, I want to take a different approach than what I tried last time.
my thought is to have Gentlecat look after the python related projects with a given priority list: 1) MeB 2) LB 3) CB
I will probably start over and write the specification in its entirety myself.
Gentlecat
I hate to ask, but what was wrong with the old approach?
ruaok
the specification was a mess and our dynamic on it was horrible.
Gentlecat
seems wrong to just throw away all the work that's been done
Freso
That's what you sometimes need to do.
ruaok
it easier to start fresh.
*is
zas
bitmap, ruaok: have a look at stats... queen move had a pretty impressive impact... basically response time atm is the same as the one we have in dead hours...
ruaok
so, do we start looking for someone with perl skills before xmas or do we wait until the new year?
zas: in a bit, please.
well, I also want to finish the yearly reports, so I may not have time to hire someone anyway. until jan.
bitmap
I'd say the sooner the better but after the new year might be less hectic
zas
someone with perl skills ... better ask for Christmas...
ruaok
any thoughts on my proposed ideas.
lol, zas
bitmap: if you can write a job description, we can get the ball rolling sooner.
zas
and yes, sooner = better anyway
Freso
I say January is a good time to start actively looking.
bitmap
different from my own?
ruaok
and may be we can ask Freso to help publicize it.
Freso
Sure.
ruaok
I think a bit less emphasis on your sysadmin prowess.
Freso
December is going to be busy with putting out remaining fires from the move, GCI, and general random disappearances due to holiday season.
ruaok
that will make it harder to find someone. but you're most qualified to write the description since you live it weekly.
bitmap
right, I can look at it
ruaok
well, lets see about knowing what we want before the year is out, so we can start fresh in jan.
great, thanks.
now, google money and dev priorities.
dev bonuses have been mentioned and given that xmas is coming, I think the whole team might need bonuses thanks to google.
no brainer.
Freso
FWIW, it seems like https://opensource.careers/ makes a living off connecting Perl developers with companies. I don't know if it'd be worth maybe spending some of the Google moneys on him?
ruaok
the recurring thought in the comments was the mb site design and UX.
I am thinking of setting aside $2000 for monkey to lay the ground work for a UI refresh -- less look and feel, but more function and ease of use.
have him set the stage that others can implement piecemeal over months time.
Freso
Is monkey an active editor? Does he know how the site functions?
ruaok
gcilou has expressed interested in helping with that.
Might be interesting to ask if he's interested in getting involved? Dunno
ruaok
Let me ask both of them about this proposal see what they think.
reosarevok
He definitely has edited quite a bit :)
Freso
Yeah. And he's definitely a very active forum user at least. Not sure about how much he edits, but it seems to be a fair amount too. :)
zas
We really need to make the site more user-friendly, my thought is that MB without tons of userscripts isn't great at all as editor
Leftmost
I had seen that suggestion and was wondering if it would make sense to try to come up with general patterns that would work for both MB and BB. I'm not sure what burden that would place, but it would move toward my eventual vision for BB.
ruaok
I'm going to be cautious with this one, given the gsoc debacle from a few summers ago.
Freso
Agreed.
reosarevok
Agreed, but then I mostly edit classical. Without classical it's not *that* bad
But still could be much better
ruaok
Leftmost: yes, I would like a style guidelines for UI development to come out of this.
perhaps some tools as well.
Freso
Leftmost: That might be nice.
reosarevok
I think we need to worry less about great UI for powerusers though
Freso
Yeah.
reosarevok
(because those *will* use userscripts anyway)
It should be more about making things as clear and helpful as possible for beginners
ruaok
ok, given that we're running out of time, I'll leave this be for now.
zas
Power users are using extra scripts, but i think newbies need improved UI to reduce errors, and encourage editing
ruaok
please think about what is important going forward. what things would you want to fix?
reosarevok
Of course if something just doesn't work at all without scripts it should be improved, but :)
ruaok
we need to define out target audience and our overall goals.
yvanz agrees with zas, twice.
I will start a google doc to collect these thoughts formally in the new year.
Freso
π
reosarevok
Sounds good :)
ruaok
but, I think everyone has enough fires to put out for the remainder of the year, yes?
Freso
Lets take cookie and vote discussion next week?
Let's
ruaok
and then come new year, we'll se the tone for the new year.
Freso
I don't think we can do either in <1min.
ruaok
Freso: ok by me.
agreed.
Freso
Alright then.
Thanks for tonight. :)
ruaok
anytime, hot stuff!
zas
Thanks, Freso ;)
ruaok
errr. :p
Freso

ruaok: Was waiting for the magic moment. :)
Leftmost
We went 1s over.
Leo_Verto
MB target audience is an interesting question, maybe conduct some user polls?
gcilou goes back to writing the essay about her skills hopes and dreams ...
ruaok
k, then what happened at 20h?
we hit capacity and things went to shit?
chirlu
Hard to tell, but whatever it was, it seems to have normalized already before queen was brought in.
Which was at 20:57.
zas
There are plenty of things i can't explain yet, i will dig this tomorrow with more stats. For example, why Queen has slower response time ? It handles less ws requests than others though weight is the same, and why processes/threads on hip didn't move while queen came into play
ruaok
the blue line in the bottom graph is also telling.
nothing new...
didn't bitmap say queen is replicating?
zas
beware, some stats may have 1-2 minute delay
ruaok
if so, that might explain it.
Gentlecat
chirlu: about the vote thing you wanted to discuss...
I might be missing something, but it looks like they are public by default in new version
chirlu
Oh, good.
Gentlecat
I don't know if that's something that can be changed
or if that's just for admin users
zas
But it solved the issue, loads on webservers are now much better, response time is the ~same than during low hours
chirlu
For the ancient version, it could be changed. No idea about the old one.
zas
bitmap: what do you think about this (queen) ?
chirlu
Gentlecat: No, I canβt see votes on jirabrainz.gentle.cat.
