I did the usual support stuff, plus I'm adding and fixing classical stuff for the BBC half the week for a couple weeks, starting last one
So, lots of adding and fixing :p
That's about it really. gcilou: go
gcilou
This week I worked on the Team page and the Projects page for the MeB website, with the help of Freso, reosarevok, Gentlecat, and LordSputnik. And really everyone who I badgered for bios and pictures. I’m thankful/sad that GCI is officially done. It’s been an exhausting/exhilarating/exciting 7 weeks.
fin
Freso
And pick the next one. ;)
gcilou
^ and help of Leo_Verto. Gentlecat go
Freso
( CJ_ and Gentlecat are left.)
Gentlecat
Last week I didn't have time to do anything apart from helping GCI students and reviewing their work.
University is consuming a lot of time and it's not changing any time soon. :(
Started writing blog post draft about messaging/notifications, but that's still far from being done.
fin.
Freso
CJ_: You're the only one left. :)
CJ_
Just like gym class. :)
Freso
Aw.

I am currently working on two things. SOLR-6 and solr logging.
For some reason solr is not logging correctly. I believe it has something to do with the mbssss configuration but I have not determined what yet.
SOLR-6 does not appear to be a sir issue. All the data is returned when doing a regular search but does not work correctly with the example search.
The problem appears to be in the custom query code that was written for solr.
I would prefer to remove it and have MB query solr directly but I have been told that is a no go and solr needs to return a format MB is familiar with.
Questions?
chirlu`
Not MB is familiar with, the data users are familiar with. It’s part of our API.
CJ_
We expect users to directly query solr?
chirlu`
Otherwise we would need to convert it somewhere.
Well, yes. All web service searches are directly forwarded to the search server.
Freso
reosarevok: I can't remember why our topic is still on for this week.
reosarevok
Neither do I :p
CJ_
Perhaps convert is in the web service? I am not familiar with the architecture outside of solr.
reosarevok
I guess the second topic can't be done without ruaok and the third might need his input?
CJ_
Unless there are other questions, I am done. fin
Freso
Oh, Leftmost? Leo_Verto maybe?
LordSputnik doesn't seem to be around.
chirlu`
He is Sput|Away, so no.
bitmap
the 3rd topic is just deciding on a date. then I can write a blog post announcing the downtime. so would prefer ruaok's input
Freso
Well, I can talk a bit about GCI, though I guess I'll also talk more about it the coming week(s). :)
chirlu`
We can make the final decision regarding http-to-https method of conversion. :)
Freso
Sure. :)
chirlu`
No-one set up a bot (as far as I am aware of), but I wrote the SQL for doing it without edits.
Freso
Let's go with that, then.
Anyone opposed?
bitmap
I'm not opposed to either. someone would have to volunteer to run the bot, though. the SQL is something I can just run myself :)
Freso
Doesn't look like it.
chirlu`
BTW, I have a pull request open against murdos’s bot to make it add new Wikidata URLs with https. Obviously this bot is a major source of new WD URLs.
Freso
I say chirlu` gives his SQL to bitmap to run and gets this done with. :)
Ah, yeah.
So maybe hold on with running the SQL until the PR has been merged?
(Or run it again at that point?)
chirlu`
Ah no, the SQL has to be run in batches over several days anyway.
In order not to overload the replication packets.
Freso
👍
chirlu`
bitmap: It’s in the ticket.
Freso
Anyone else have something for the meeting?
bitmap
I saw it, thanks :)
we can do the first batch today, I guess
chrisskye
nothing from me
Freso
Okay. About GCI, I just want to thank all the mentors and students for this run. It's not completely over until Wednesday, but we only have 5 (or less) open tasks right now, and there won't be more open tasks.
Next week I'll have numbers and stats to share, but we are not allowed to disclose the winners/finalists until Google's own blog post on the 8th.
And also thanks to everyone else in the channels for helping students (and mentors) to figure things out. It's definitely been an exciting first GCI. :)
And with that, let's finish up five minutes early for once, yeah? :)
</BANG>
CJ_
I would like to continue the search format discussion. Who would best be involved in that?
Freso
chirlu` and bitmap and possibly Gentlecat strike me as the best candidates. :)
bitmap
CJ_: a problem with having our perl process the search server responses is that we have a finite number of perl processes to handle requests, and having them wait for the search response ties too many up for too long
chirlu`
And Mineo and possibly ruaok.
CJ_
bitmap, I am unclear as to what you mean. Why would they be waiting?
bitmap
this is why we use the x-accel-redirect thing in nginx, and have nginx wait for them
Freso
chrisskye: Are you involved with the business cards as well, or is that ruaok only?
CJ_
bitmap, Then they are not touching the web service at all and are directly connecting to search?
Freso
Yes.
CJ_
Hmm.
Freso
They are being directly forwarded by the nginx frontend, I believe.
chrisskye
I think that is up to ruaok until such time as he passes it to me...
bitmap
they are touching the webservice, but MBS forwards the request
It actually works fine without the separators, yeah.
kepstin
hmm. justified text is a bit unusual on web pages, mostly because you don't have hyphenation.
gcilou
Right
kepstin
in this case the line lengths are long enough it seems ok, but imo it gives too much of an impression of "rigidity" and "order" :)
and we're all pretty fun and strange folk here :)
Freso
I actually think the justified version looks better here.
gcilou
with smaller browser size, it looks really funky justified
kepstin
yeah, mobile devices in particular will have problems when you get long words
Freso
Quite possibly.
kepstin
hmm. the black & white photos means that we can't see rob's hair :/
Freso
Isn't there some Unicode character or HTML something that can be used to hyphenate words but only display the hyphen when the word actualls gets broken up?
gcilou
Yeah, but with everyone else in b&w, chrisskye ruaok and LordSputnik really stuck out
Freso
I think I've seen this, but I'm not sure.
kepstin
Freso: yeah, but it's kind of annoying because the character is included when you copy/paste and it breaks search in some browsers
Freso
Right.
Is it Unicode?
Gentlecat
maybe zas still has original photos
kepstin
yeah, the "soft hyphen"
Freso
Alright.
Gentlecat
since these are all from the summit
kepstin
maybe make all the photos b&w, except leave rob's hair in colour.
Freso
chrisskye's and ruaok's aren't. :p
But yeah.
kepstin
? :)\
Gentlecat
well, we have colored versions of those
Freso
kepstin: That was my first thought when I saw your comment. :p
