I think it's probably fine to WONTFIX it. If not, someone can reopen it: https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/OTHER-143
      • CatQuest
how do i vote for a ticket in the new jira thing
      • and get rid of "open issues" field on for example https://tickets.metabrainz.org/projects/OTHER/i...
      • Freso|laptop
CatQuest, click on "Vote for this issue" when viewing an issue.
      • CatQuest
        editing the url doesnt work?
      • Freso|laptop
        No idea about the latter.
      • CatQuest
I wish things were where I was used to them. :/
      • also wtf is gravatar on jira now
      • I can't read "allopenissues" right either

Gentlecat, I had a look. Seems mostly like a caching issue to me. Both the recent reviews and Popular reviews use the same macro for showing the gravatar. The only difference I could find is that recent reviews get their data directly from the db (https://github.com/metabrainz/critiquebrainz/bl...) whereas the popular reviews can get it from the cache (which should only
      • CatQuest
anshuman73: could i pursuade you to look int ohow hard it would be to use a differnt source for avatars? liek the community.metabrainz.org ones insted for example?
      • (gravatar isbad)
      • anshuman73
CatQuest, I believe you say that only because gravatar hashes the email ids ?
      • CatQuest
I belive i say that because it also means that I can't actually use my avatar because I use different emails for different sites (and if i enabeled gravatar (ie made an account) I'd star seeing a loads of different places theseavatars which shouldn't be anywere unless i wanted thme to be)
      • anshuman73
        That's true..
      • CatQuest
I don't like the persuasive and pervasive utilisation of gravatar and how they do their thing (ie "hashes") is my second thing
      • D4RK-PH0ENiX joined the channel
      • Freso|laptop
anshuman73, and the hashing allows someone to track a person across sites as long as they use the same e-mail address.
      • CatQuest
(wich is the reason i use differnt emails :p)
      • or bogus ones like blup@blip.whatever
      • Freso|laptop
Well, I pretty much use the same username everywhere, so it's not like I'm hard to track regardless.
      • anshuman73
Gentlecat, should we move to completely hashing the user-ids instead of email ids ? ^^
      • CatQuest
true, and i'm usually cat* or blup, but then it's my conscious *choice*
      • Freso|laptop
anshuman73, that's not an option with Gravatar though.
      • (Unless they've changed.)
      • ruaok
I'm in favor of getting rid of the gravatar, just so we can stop having this conversation over and over again.
      • CatQuest
I really think we should utilize thecommunity avatar thing instead. it woudl be a good use for those!
      • Gentlecat
gravatar is an opt-in option, you don't have to use it
      • CatQuest
on jira and mb proper :D
      • Freso|laptop
        +1 @ ruaok
      • CatQuest
        Gentlecat: not really?
      • Gentlecat
yes it is, go to your settings in CB
      • anshuman73
Freso|laptop, what we currently do is check if a user wants their gravatar or not and if they have saved an email id or not. if either is false, we generate gravatr images based on hashes of their user ids
      • so no tracking ;)
      • Freso|laptop
        Ah, alright.
      • Gentlecat
if there is a good alternative for it, feel free to implement the change
      • CatQuest
I'm brute force opt outing by literally blocking gravatar in request policy, but I stil have a "grvatar" that's syntesized with their whatever based on my email ro something (unless they've changed)
      • anshuman73
Gentlecat, want me to look into the community avatar
      • ?
      • CatQuest
        +100 t "good alternative!
      • Gentlecat
you are free to do whatever you want
      • CatQuest
I'll litterally give youchocolte if you do that
      • anshuman73
Gentlecat, Also, have a look at my previous message of why popular reviews' gravatars may not be working
      • Gentlecat, ;)
      • CatQuest
        erh chocolate*
      • anshuman73 runs immediately to work on it
      • \o/
      • Freso|laptop
        Ha.
      • CatQuest
what I don't like is that "f either is false, we generate gravatr images based on hashes of their user ids"
      • I'd want to not have anything instead then. (or pick one to upøoad, or use the community one etc)
      • CatQuest isn't even kidding about the chocolate :D
      • ruaok
        no to uploading images.
      • I don't want to have to store images on our servers.
      • Gentlecat
        well, sorry
      • CatQuest
        community avatars though, that's good
      • Gentlecat
        can't please everyone
      • anshuman73
Gentlecat, though will that require us to save images of each letter
      • yeah, ruaok said it
      • CatQuest
i don't even care as long as we get rid of gravatar :D
      • ruaok
Gentlecat: not everyone, but I can say no. :)
      • Freso|laptop
(Jira and Discourse allows uploading avatars to the server.)
      • CatQuest
        jira does?
      • ruaok
        Freso|laptop: that is fine.
      • CatQuest
        i'mma gonna try this then
      • Freso|laptop
(But I guess they're also both in the Google Cloud, so technically not our servers.)
      • ruaok
that is not what I mean, Freso|laptop
      • Google Cloud, is still our responsibility.
      • Freso|laptop
      • Gentlecat
ruaok: it was a response to the gravatar thing, not to uploading
      • CatQuest
aw i couldn't vote on it fast enough
      • who is $nake ? :D
      • also holy hell that list is longer than I remember :o
      • Gentlecat
so the decision to turn it off has been already made?
      • ruaok
        not formally, no
      • Gentlecat
just for the record, I don't see any real discussion, just complaints from one person
      • ruaok
general consensus is that we're tired of bickering about it.
      • Gentlecat
      • Leo_Verto
Does JIRA cache the gravatars or embed gravatar.com images?
      • Gentlecat
(I probably should just stop caring about those things, but come on..)
      • Leo_Verto
because Gravatar's business model does kind of revolve around collecting data when embedded in other websites
      • ruaok
whatever we do, just please stop bickering about gravatar!!
      • Freso|laptop
Gentlecat, it can be turned on again easily. ruaok said he was in favour of turning it off if it caused the bickering to stop. I agreed and followed up. If we find out we want to keep using it and continue to have people bickering about it every few months, it can be turned on again quite easily.

LordSputnik: Am having some issues with attaching client-side hooks to the server rendered React code. I currently have all the editor tabs converted to react, all that's left is to attach js hooks to the react app for the achievements tab. I noticed a controller/achievement.js file that is included in the original jade template but it isn't included in the client build script. After adding it in I ge

      • tldr; I just wanted to ask if there was any reason the achievements.js wasn't included in the build-client script. The achievement form seems to work fine on the live bookbrainz site
      • Leo_Verto
        huh
      • well adding achievements was QuoraUK's GSoC project so he also might know about that

Freso|laptop: re: OTHER-20, theoretically possible if it's really wanted, but I wouldn't recommend it
      • Freso|laptop
legoktm, will you close it as WONTFIX then?
      • (Considering the amount of traffic on the ticket, I'd say it isn't "really wanted".)
      • I've also not noticed anyone ask for/about it on IRC or in forums or anywhere before seeing that ticket.
      • legoktm
        done
      • Freso|laptop
legoktm, https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/OTHER-259... is bit more managable. :)
      • legoktm
that looks nicer, but I meant the 259 ticket specifically :P I'll look into that once I'm actually awake

      • ruaok
        very nice!
      • so, next thing you can help me test...
      • log into the VM. in the home dir is the mb source.
      • see if you can make some changes. in theory it should pick them up automagically.
      • gcilou
        ok
      • gcilou now wonders how vagrant expects me to open a file...
      • ruaok
        to edit a file?
      • gcilou
        yes
      • ruaok
feel free to install whichever editor you'd like
      • without starting another holy crusade, which is your editor of choice?
      • gcilou
        atom
      • ruaok
        I <3 you!
      • gcilou
        :)
      • ruaok
the tricky part is that I am not sure how to accomplish that with this setup
      • anyone here comfortable with helping gcilou install atom on linux and how to make it appear on the mac desktop?
      • gcilou will provide virtual chocolate..
      • is that like vegan chocolate?
      • gcilou
        better than vegan
      • ruaok
        phew.
      • alastairp
I wonder if it would be easier to install atom for mac and edit over ssh
      • ruaok
sounds like it. how does one do that?
      • alastairp
      • however, the challenge will be to get sshfs to know where the vagrant host is. hmm
      • ruaok
it is on port 2222 of localhost.
      • gcilou: give the above a shot and see how it goes
      • gcilou
from where (inside vagrant or ?)
      • alastairp
        no, on your mac

      • if I have to setup shared folders it will be weeks more
