good morning!

I spent some time working with jmp_music_ on finishing his SoC project, and some back and forward with pristine___ on making the recommendation system work faster

I gave some back-and-forth about the recently discussed listenbrainz/recommendation stuff, and also talked with some UPF coworkers about ideas here.

I spent some time working on some new functionality for logging in brainzutils, and did some brainzstorming on CB (more on that later)

Since SB was off hands I tried to explore other projects. Finally decided to check out CB, although it has low users and activity, I would like to be part of its journey.

Also shared my experience with MeB in local community meeting which led to few people to starring spambrainz_ml repo, hope to see more traction there.

so over the last few weeks I've been slowly looking at a few things on CB. This started as a way to apply some security updates, but then I realised that there were a number of features that have been worked on over the last few years that haven't been released, and in the process of trying to release these I found a number of additional bugs

I had a look into stats, and since the beginning of 2020, only 4 reviews have been written

we currently have no maintainer for the project.

that means it's clear that people aren't using CB anywhere near as much as the other brainzes. There's currently no MeB contractor or volunteer working on CB, and so we need to make a decision on what to do with it

and at the very very least we need to do security updates.

our options are:

1. Find a volunteer

2. Mothball it (read only mode, but that still takes security updates)

3. Give up and shut it down.

I would vote for 1

it's not yet clear what a volunteer would do in this context. We know that we need someone to work on programming, but also we need to work out how to make people want to use CB

Voting for 1 is only really helpful if you’re volunteering to maintain it. :p

Depending on the tasks, I'll try to lend a hand

the problem is that people come and say they will do things, but then don't. in LB it is easy to be part of things since there is so much activity.

there have been some forum posts over the years trying to encourage people to write reviews, but as much as people say "oh yeah, I'll do that", no one actually is writing anything

I feel eventually with LB feed people will also find CB interesting to give rviews

1 would be my preferred path too, but I can’t volunteer myself to it at this point.

there is a chance that CB is simply under-exposed and that it might flourish with more attention.

hard to say, really.

people say that they'll do a lot of things, but they almost never do. This isn't a problem, people have other things to do, but "promises of doing something" is almost never enough to make future plans

for me, honestly it's that I can't make reviews of books

I haven't checked it out totally, but the reviews and users are less so far. It's connected to MB account so I expected there would be more accounts

there is also a bit of a disconnect with the rest of the brainz projects -- it is a very different project.

also that my beta reviews where deleted. that were no fun

MB also has a 5 star rating in itself if I am not wrong.

I think direct exposure on MusicBrainz pages would bring a lot more use

imean. i literlaly have soem book reviews already started in a note only waiting for the actual bookbrainz ability to review

There was a plan to move the 5 star rating to CB, but that was when CB was still maintained.

then maybe next meeting we circle around and see what has developed.

maybe we do need to make it more visible from MB, I don't think we link anything unless there are already reviews

but at very least we need one person to step up and be the leader for the project.

great. it seems like there is overwhelming positivity towards it, we just need to work out how to turn that into content

I am will try my best to explore CB in the coming week, need some help on that. I think it's fate that I should work on CB at some point, as it was first GSoC proposal as well lol 😅

also we should put a post up on the blog like "hi we are looking for a maintainer for CB, also we want YOU(to review stuff/tell us why you havent)

it's harder to get kids not to be "clever" i nthat way

CB takes a lot of disk space and resources to install because it has a full musicbrainz database copy, but the instructions are quite straightforward
