The coding period changes from 12 to 10 hours, which should give a lot more "air" in the scheduling, which the hope is that students should be able to do a part time job (or studies) on the side, and also allows more flexibility around exams and other things going on during that time.

It also allows flexibility in students for example arranging with their mentor to take a week or so off for holidays etc.

Gsoc isnt an internship so many raised concerns so they reduced the te so people can continue internships

yvanzo, bitmap: I guess the question is whether you think it's just useless for people to subscribe to those, or whether you think it can cause issues with timeouts and whatnot. If the former, then I think it's fine for people to do it if they find a use to it (especially with collections since as CatQuest suggested, you can *not* get emails from those by not subscribing)
