Jira and RT are the big 2 I've found that could be a solution to project management
warp
aCiD2`: on test, I assume catalyst is running differently. what happens when something does blow up?
ruaok
so, as I've mentioned previously today, we need to get our act together wrt to project management.
aCiD2`
warp: It's meant to just say "come back soon"
ruaok
so, the question is... what tools do we use for that.
aCiD2`
Well, Trac is not enough imo
ruaok
and if someone says M$ Project, I'll fly to wherever you are and SLAP you.
ok, well virtual slap anyways.
aCiD2`
I think we should try MS Project
navap
haha
ruaok
you know I WILL slap you, silly bugger!
luciddrmr
do you guys have a firm set of requirements you can't live without? that probably makes the decision-making somewhat easier, yeah?
aCiD2`
:D
ruaok
I will see you again at some point.
aCiD2`
Jira and RT I've bene looking at, and they gave us more than Trac. good time estimating, linking issues together with dependencies, and nice milestone tracking

warp
ruaok: I have no experience with such tools, as a general rule prefer free / open source software over propietary.
ruaok
luciddrmr: I wouldn't even call it a firm set of requirements yet.
I think the integration between issue tracking and project management makes sense.
I like how in JIRA you can estimate how long a task will take.
ijabz
Perhaps make a list of specific things the current system cant do that your really need it to do
ruaok
and make dependencies.
that should allow us to get a big picture overview of what is coming.
luciddrmr: Yea, I spoke to some #perl guys in that and they say it's featureful, but not a dream to use
nikki__ joined the channel
ruaok nods at ijabz and warp
luciddrmr
i definitely agree with that assessment of it
nikki__
is it going to replace trac as our bug tracker then?
ruaok
jira is not free software sadly. but its gratis to us.
nikki_: thats the idea, yes.
but if that is a good idea, remains to be seen.
aCiD2`
The Jira situation is we get the code to it, we get it for free (as we're open source) which is a fairly nice middle ground as far as proprietory goes
ruaok
second life uses jira and my friend who works there likes it.
aCiD2`
RT is completely free
ruaok
and jira is now installed on our server.
I could install RT and then let people loose on both of them.
ijabz
its also used by Apache
aCiD2`
i'm not sure we have time for that
ruaok
ijabz: yes, I was pleased to see that.
not sure how to proceed then.
aCiD2`
I haven't seen anything that either one couldn't do yet, so it's more down to preference, and for me Jira wins on the interface
ruaok
should we setup jira and let people play?
aCiD2`: +1
aCiD2`
I wouldn't mind migrating report #34 / ngs beta 1 over to Jira
warp
I think we'll have to use <newtool> and trac side-by-side for a while, not introduce a new tool to users just reporting bugs until we've used it some time and decided we're happy with it.
aCiD2`
and seeing how it can look if we have a real world case
ruaok
yeah, once setup I figure we should try and import that list of bugs.
warp: yes.
ijabz
ahem, wouldnt we be better off getting ngs beta out
first
ruaok
ijabz: yes it would.
nikki__
I don't mind helping keep them in sync
ruaok
but, the BBC wants to see a bounties milestone.
aCiD2`
ijabz: I've been using Jira myself for getting NGS out, and it's easier to organise myself if I can see dependencies and stuff
ruaok
and since the bounties are supposed to pay for warp, that is a very high priority as I see it.
warp nods.
I think its nearly impossible to do a good job with the bounties if we are not properly organized.
ijabz
k, have we got a list of bounties now then
ruaok
ijabz: no, that is just the problem.
ijabz
ah I see
ruaok
its hard to see what they should be without being organized.
outsidecontext_ joined the channel
that is what I learned last week when I set down to work on them.
ijabz
+1 for Jira then
ruaok
lol
I will ask the BBC for more time while we get our fecal cohesion on.
ijabz
hehe
ruaok
so, I will install jira and make a post to mb-devel to ask people to give feedback.
warp
ruaok: have they been informed that you're hiring someone?
aCiD2`
ruaok: is jira exposed publicly atm?
ruaok
warp: matt wood is on the board of directors and he voted in favor of hiring you. :)
matt wood == BBC
warp
ok, didn't know that :)
ruaok
aCiD2`: no, not even to me.
aCiD2`
heh ok
ruaok
but that is the goal for this afternoon.
I can ssh tunnel in but that is it.
the hiring of your was my main topic of discussion for when I was in london. :)
he knows very well. :)
ok, anything else?
well then. onward we go.
</BANG>
aCiD2`
oh, are you going to be around more this week ruaok?
ruaok
warp: honots, please.
all week, all the time!
nikki__ runs off for food
aCiD2`
maybe we should touch base thursday to make sure we're on track and all
warp
yes, sir
aCiD2`
great :)
ruaok
next week only monday or so, dues to silly holidays.
aCiD2`: lets.
navap
ruaok: Just a reminder about the MetaBrainz logo, no rush though.
ruaok
if I mail you the graphic, can you take care of the yes, navap ?
navap
What would need to be taken care of?
I can upload it to the wiki, no problem.
ruaok
yea. ;-)
I have too many things on my plate atm.
aCiD2`: what was the URL for the jira sandbox?
navap
I presume it's released under the same license as the MB logos? CC A-NC-SA 2.0.
