well, just generally state the suggestion for everyone to hear. then we'll discuss.
alastairp
sweet
keep in mind that it's not going to be a set of rules that we suggest mb follows and then everything will be OK
it will probably involve a bit of back and forth to work out some ideas
ruaok
yep. but this is mostly to just put the idea on the table
alastairp
yeah, for sure

RE: last week's convo where I was reluctant about being an RE; Just looking forward a week, there's a proposal which looks likely to pass, which would tweak a lot of AR link phrases. I can do the changes myself, assuming that passes, if you guys want - the alternative would be tickets spanning 141 different ARs... which would really suck all around.

OK all I have started to upload 51000 isrcs that should add about 50% more than you already had
ruaok
urgh.
can you stop it please?
ffimon
yep
ruaok
if you're going to do that, I'd like to create a bot account for you.
ffimon
stoped
ruaok
or rather, you create a new account.
call it ffimon_bot or something.
ffimon
ok
ruaok
and I'll go turn the bot flag on.
and you add something in the bio that says you're mass adding things under that bot.
that way, if we figure out that there is some sort of bug, we can undo things.
let me know what account name you choose.
ffimon
ffimon_bot
ruaok
k
done.
though it may not be reflected soon. but that is ok.
now please set the Bio for it explaining what you're doing and that ffimon is responsible.
ffimon
Done
ruaok
great.
thanks.
now continue submitting as that bot and not as you.
ffimon
done
ive split them up by release
I have another 100k or so but these will be harder to match as they arn't exact character for character matches
ruaok
ok, good. lets see how this first batch goes.
navap
Where is this data coming from?
ffimon
once I have my head round full text searches in sqlite ill have it done
Its from a database of 900k tracks I wrote some software to extract isrc data from discs for a company who supplies music to the radio companies
the isrcs are from there cd rips
they also have a further 300k which i have extracted and matched from other databases suplied by the record companies themselves but i have not included that data as I dont know who owns it
all the isrcs submitted are from physical media we own
navap
cool
ruaok: If you have a min can you please change the homepage/bio for the FreeDB user?
Pleae use http://musicbrainz.org/doc/FreeDB as the homepage, I've updated the page to include details about the automatic importing that went on.
ruaok
k
anything for the bio?
navap
And please change the bio to "This user was used to automatically import data from FreeDB. See http://musicbrainz.org/doc/FreeDB for more information."
I've included details about what criteria was followed to import data on the FreeDB page. Do you think this discussion stuff is necessary anymore though? http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Auto-Insert_From_Fr...
ruaok
done.
navap
Thanks
ruaok
ideal approach? heh. turn it off.
naw, all good. toss it.
np
support@ just got this email: "I need help to establish my account and play the entered disc"
I haven't touched it in months, but that's the general layout I think would be best.
brianfreud still isn't loving either one
ffimon
Hi Ive Uploaded around 5000 ISRCs Ive checked 40/50 or so with the french isrc database I will leave it a couple of days for users to check and then load some more

navap: I almost feel as though we need 4 landing pages, not 1 - Dev, Doc, Guideline, and Community
then you could pretty much ignore http://wiki.musicbrainz.org; it's a tiny link at bottom, rather than one of the 4 langing page links in the menu
I don't know that Beginners Guide is the right one to link "Doc" to though
navap
Well my plan is to have MusicBrainz Documentation the home page for wiki.musicbrainz.org, the page when you click "Documentation" in the menu, and also the page you end up on if you go to musicbrainz.org/doc
brianfreud
MusicBrainz Documentation would be better
You might also add a link to the menu right to Picard Documentation
"the home page for wiki.musicbrainz.org" -> That rather sounds like Dev, Community, and Guidelines would be a bit too hidden in the wiki
navap
I don't think it's a "first level" link. I think Picard Documentation is fine being linked off of the Picard page.
Not at all, the documentation home page should touch on all areas of MB documentation. If only to say "psst. are you a developer? click here"
brianfreud
I'd rather not take a 2nd level item, even if it is Docs, and make it the wiki top level
navap
huh?
brianfreud
If Doc is at top, where then are Community and Style ?
(even if you're giving a 'pssst' to Dev...)
navap
I don't know what you'd put inside "Community" that isn't able to go on the documentation home page, and there is a menu link directly to the style guidelines because I felt that was very important.
the menu links all go to wikidocs; if you also move Doc to the top level of wiki, not wikidocs, then you rather effectively hide Community and Dev, even if you move Style within Doc
navap
However, I do not think that page qualifys to be a first level menu link.
brianfreud agrees in that Community Projects, in general, have rather died
Exactly, so until there is a stronger focus on them a brief mention about that community project page is all that is required (just like how we currently do it on wiki.musicbrainz.org)
The menu structure I proposed was based purely on current documentation/focus + documentation that I can count on myself to write. More pages can always be added to the menu, but I personally feel that that may not be necessary.
brianfreud
I think, so long as it's Docs, not Beginners Guide, then yes, that's a good split.
Though Beginner's Guide may be worth separately linking, above/outside of those 4 main categories
navap
As long as what is Docs?
brianfreud
Something that's really "Docs", not just the beginner's guide
navap
I'm not following you... That's what I've been saying the entire time. I want MusicBrainz Documentation to touch on all areas of MB documentation, it wouldn't be just a beginners guide.
brianfreud
I think we agree then
navap
It would be a page that anyone (the public, new users, developers, anyone else?) can go to and get something out of.
brianfreud
I was just referring to the link as it currently is in the menu on test
Beginner's Guide / Style Guidelines / FAQs / Development
navap
The link/page name? Or the content that the link currently contains?
I think you're missing something there :p
"Documentation" itself is a link..
brianfreud
I'd suggest Beginner's Guide / (separator) / Documentation / Style Guidelines / Community / Development
navap
That's the page I've been talking about this entire time.
brianfreud
ugh
navap
:)
brianfreud hates menus which do that :P
brianfreud
it's either a menu, or a link, don't make it both :P
navap
I think it looks extremely silly to have an about link inside the about menu, a search link inside the search menu, a products link inside the products menu, etc.
