the german supreme court shows its technical ignorance
(and the rest of the judicial system)
kepstin-work
it's more likely that the services will block access in germany than implement some of the things they're being asked to do :/
ruaok
yep
I find it funny that gema is quoted too.
nikki
yay for proxies
ruaok
srsly. we've been using them quite a bit.
kepstin-work is trying to load the isni site terms of service, but it keeps timing out.
reosarevok
Maybe those *are* their terms of service :p
nikki
ruaok: speaking of which, some time ago we were talking about things I dislike about germany and I said the traffic lights. there's one I go past a lot lately which tends to have the pattern green light + red man, red light + red man, green light + red man, red light + green man
reosarevok
"use the service, expect timeouts"
nikki
oh, and when the green man appears, all the traffic comes round the corner to almost run me over :P
kepstin-work wonders why the terms of use are on port 17100 rather than 80.
ruaok
nikki: yeah, the same happens here in BCN too.
nikki
I can be pretty patient, but that particular one drives me nuts. I get sick of waiting and just cross when there's *actually* no traffic, instead when there is but I'm allowed to :P
ruaok
I just wont wait.
and if a car gets too close to me, I hit it.
you should see the driver's reaction.
some people will stop and ask if I am OK.
others are like "how dare you touch my car?"
dude, if I can touch your car, you're doing something wrong.
nikki
I like to trigger the lights at like 6am when there's one car on the entire street and it has to stop so I can cross :P
ruaok
heh.
nikki didn't make the rules >:D
kepstin-work
one of the traffic lights near my place is buggy - if you hit the button at the wrong time, it will cancel itself rather than activate the pedestrian crossing :/
(the wrong time being after the pedestrian crossing was just active, but before the lights have changed for the other direction)
nikki
another thing I hate is the way they label trains...
reosarevok
You mean pressing the buttons *does* something?
I thought they were just placebo
nikki
half the things will call it the RE5, the other half will call it the RE29389 as if I'm supposed to know those are referring to the same thing
kepstin-work
they sometimes do, sometimes don't. depends on the intersection
reosarevok
It certainly never feels any faster when I press them here
kepstin-work
most downtown ones don't do anything with the buttons.
but in off hours and in suburbs, they usually don't activate the pedestrian crossing at all unless you press the button
nikki
heh, some of ours change exactly when you press them, so you stand there trying to get the indicator light thingy to show up, only to turn round and find out it's not working because it already changed to the green man :P
reosarevok
Heh, here at night they just give up and put everything in yellow
kepstin-work
the buttons around here usually have little lights on the button to indicate whether you need to press it. If the light is on, pressing the button does nothing.
reosarevok
"fine, whatever, cross"
kepstin-work
(if the light is off, then the crossing won't activate unless you push the button, and the light comes on when you push it)
ocharles
Ok, I'm happy with the progress on work attributes so I think I'll head home now
all editing works - just need admin panels and edit displays and we're good to go
read "good to go" as "ready to have all the inevitable bugs reported" :)
reoafk
I'll probably be missing the meeting today - hopefully there's nothing that needs my attention specifically :)
If we vote on something I delegate on nikki :p
reoafk goes see some fancy choralish show
nikki
heh, he says that like I'm not about to keel over and fall asleep
nikki delegates both of our votes to ianmcorvidae :P

ocharles
Nah, I only read 3 haskell papers and did half a page of maths. the rest was walking on cliffs looking at the sea :)

ocharles: take it from the top!
ocharles

ijabz
my only comment, is noone ever seems to says that they had a really good week
ocharles
just before I went on holiday I was getting seriously burnt out, and it felt like a large portion of it was due to the inane amount of friction our Perl codebase produces
Our code is ok, not great, but the majority of the pain really does feel due to the language itself
