does anyone know enough of our transclusion process to know if excluding https://musicbrainz.org/doc/api.php would be possible? someone has sent me an email asking for that page to be excluded because it makes the pywikibot code believe that https://musicbrainz.org/doc/ is a mediawiki installation

it kind of feels like we're not trying. "oh, the union flag in the corner doesn't represent who we are, so let's just take the same flag and replace it with a fern!"

weeksio you wanna be careful with that though: for when people are actually searching for VA they'd get http://musicbrainz.org/artist/4e46dd54-81a6-4a75-… instead. (which they shouldn't) or any of the other VA named like so http://musicbrainz.org/search?query=various%20art…

      • 2015-09-01 24427, 2015

      • weeksio_
I thought I would check OCLC to see how they treat them and the have them as an artist/group with one alias: "VSQ"

"a rotating collective of top classical musicians"

      • ruaok
that shouldn't change how we search for them, no?

      • 2015-09-01 24415, 2015

the problem with the searchresults is they have done a tribute album for a ton of different bands/artists

      • ruaok
CatQuest had some comments about that yesterday

they have an alias for each tribute album
      • 2015-09-01 24449, 2015

      • chirlu`
The aliases should probably be marked as search hints.

right now results include alias hits, so vsq is showing up in a lot of search results for the bands they have released tribute albums for
      • 2015-09-01 24429, 2015

      • weeksio_
since they have so many albums, they have high ref counts and they are being bumped way up in popularity

so that phrase appears as a tag and as a disambiguation...maybe the db schema could have a boolean property for artists that aren't really artists?

      • 2015-09-01 24439, 2015

      • weeksio_
It would be great to treat all SPAs the same in an artist search to get around the popularity metric boosting them unnaturally, but since the tag can be added by anyone (and has been for VSQ) the tag is not the solution for catching it
      • 2015-09-01 24431, 2015

      • chirlu`
Hm, the aliases are very old. Some got already removed ten years ago, e.g. https://musicbrainz.org/edit/2992988

but yea. there is that issue, with that kind of thing being added. those sohdl be artist credits now or sometihng. idk
      • 2015-09-01 24427, 2015

      • weeksio_
Of course, I could just leave the SPAs alone and let SPAs with high ref_counts appear high in the results
      • 2015-09-01 24441, 2015

      • CatQuest
what I'm mostly worried about is that while adding VA releases, the "fix-search-thing that weeksio_ proposes will really screw around with the few artists actually *named* "various artists". i think perhaps the age is mature to rename "Various Artists" to [various artists] or something
      • 2015-09-01 24426, 2015

      • weeksio_
the negative boost is on the mbid not on the phrase
      • 2015-09-01 24449, 2015

I don't know what that means.
      • 2015-09-01 24411, 2015

      • weeksio_
it will only affect the SPA various artist
      • 2015-09-01 24454, 2015

      • weeksio_
if the mbid for the SPA is a search result...it gets a negative boost
      • 2015-09-01 24406, 2015

      • CatQuest
a direct search for "various artists" should *always* have the VA artist first. possibly only, and have the others only available after a "show additional" click or something. we still have people adding VA releases to the wrong "Various Artists" artist
      • 2015-09-01 24417, 2015

      • weeksio_
not, if a search is for "various artist"

there's a thing I just thought of... would it be possible to somehow give the spesific Various Artist" (the real one, with the db row=1) a special icon or something? make it bold

that would be.. impractical. but then we should try to find out why so many flase positives happen and fix it at the reason, not hack it os it appears less
