Having problems with tagger vs. musicmatch. Anybody around?
      • melange
I think they're all recovering from new years
      • Go186K
Not that late here yet (west coast US)
      • Still preparing to recover. ;-)
      • melange
.. or they're all priming up for it :)
      • Go186K
        :-)
      • You a tagger user?
      • melange
not so much, I'm based on linux. I occasionally start it up in vmware though
      • need something tested?
      • Go186K
Running win32 here so I guess it's out of bounds.
      • melange
vmware runs win98 in a virtual machine, so I can do win32
      • Go186K
maybe a recommendation. what would be the best win32 program to examine tag contents?
      • melange
hmm .. I used to like Helium2, but I think that's become a pay program
      • Go186K
        is it good?
      • melange
that's more of a tag editor though, not sure it'll give you any raw info
      • if that's what you're after
      • it was pretty good back when I used to use it
      • that's going back a year or two now :)
      • Go186K
I may end up writing my own tag inspector some day just so I can understand what's in those things.
      • :-)
      • melange
otherwise, a good hex viewer and the id3v2 specs handy ;)
      • Go186K
I've been tagging my collection with the MB tagger for several months. Decided to re-build my musicmatch library. Now musicmatch is having trouble with new tags.
      • MB tagger use id3v1 or id3v2?
      • melange
musicmatch does some weird things with the tags
      • MB is both. it always uses v2, optionally does v1 (both can exist in a file)
      • I've always heard bad things about musicmatch and tagging, so I've always avoided it
      • Go186K
Probably an issue with musicmatch. I've been using it to rip my CD's because it's easy. Maybe I should switch to another program,.
      • melange
        I recommend CDex and LAME
      • I think the encoder in MusicMatch is considered pretty crappy too, if I recall correctly
      • Go186K
Works on both win32 and linux?
      • melange
CDex is win32 only, I think, so yeah
      • Go186K
No problem. My linux box has been out of commission for almost a year.
      • melange
there might be better things out there now, it's been a while since I was a win32 person
      • whats wrong with it?
      • Go186K
Wish I could say the same. My kids need win32 for games so our computers are mostly running XP.
      • melange
        I have a ps2 for that :)
      • Go186K
        :)
      • melange
with the occasional dual-boot into win98 for some games, that's fairly rare though
      • Go186K
As soon as I get my CD collection ripped I'm going to rebuild the linux box with new HW and run SAMBA.
      • I'll check out CDex and LAME for the rest of my ripping. MusicMatch is beginning to be a headache.
      • I need a library manager though.
      • Too many files.
      • melange
do you know what encoder musicmatch uses? Blade? Xing? Fraunhofer?
      • yeah, I know the feeling

      • Go186K
heh. I think you're right. My conscience is getting to me.
      • BTW, I live only about 20 miles from M$ HQ and lots of my friends work for them.
      • melange

      • :)

      • melange

      • djce
I did do something about that - I didn't forget!
      • melange
        :)
      • djce
It was a bit "dirty" though, code-wise. It will get done, honest.
      • melange
I'm not terribly fussed, it's only a minor thing
      • doesn't phase me, it was more of a "hey, that's not right, better tell someone" rather than a "everything is broken" thing :)
      • djce
        sure. ok, duly noted :)

      • melange
yeah, that's probably not such a bad idea
      • djce
I have a very common firstname + lastname, but a very unusual set of initials.

      • djce: are you still here?
      • djce
        yes
      • melange
can you explain the trm lookup count value?
      • djce
        sure
      • every time the tagger, or some other app, calls the lookup-info-by-TRM-id function
      • then the lookupcount for that TRM goes up by one
      • melange
        ok
      • so, if I find what looks to be a homebrew/bogus album, and the TRMs have only been hit, like, once, I can use that to back up my theory?
      • and how can a trm have 0 lookups?
      • djce
sounds likely, yes. It could well mean that that album has only been tagged once or twice.
      • melange
(presuming the lookup count gets bumped when it's put into the database)
      • djce
When a TRM is first generated, it's count is zero.
      • melange
        ok
      • djce
So after the first round of tagging, it's still zero.
      • it only starts going up if you force an "analyze again" (?) on those files again
      • melange
        right-o
      • thanks, that helps a lot
