i want to install the musicbrainz tables in a database already populated with other tables, procedures, etc. i'm fairly sure there are no naming conflicts. any other problems with doing this?

      • ruaok
bmaury: its been done -- the audioscrobbler's have done it.

awesome, thank you. we have a similar data model, with reviews linked to the artist, album and (hopefully) track. i wish i had come across your data about 3 months ago...

AR has the possiblity for having an instrument attribute for a given link
      • 2005-04-01 09135, 2005

      • ruaok
and our hierarchy of music instruments sucks.

the brackets are the descriptions for the instruments (attributes in general)
      • 2005-04-01 09131, 2005

got it, and sent it out to two musicians (a sax player in the berkeley jazz band and a professional cellist) who are in my program (which deals with just this kind of organizational problem). i'm sure if they had more time, they'd help out. but we are all dealing with our theses. hopefully they will come back with some suggestions or contacts.

one more question for you: if i want to bypass the perl scripts, and just write a quick shell program to create and populate the tables, would i be able to figure out the proper order of the sql scripts in the mb_server/admin/sql directory, and then just load the data using \copy?
      • 2005-04-01 09116, 2005

      • bmaury
or should i just try it?
      • 2005-04-01 09155, 2005

      • ruaok
the perl scripts are *robust* and *fast*.
      • 2005-04-01 09103, 2005

      • ruaok
I can't recommend them highly enough.

        one sec...
      • 2005-04-01 09141, 2005

      • ruaok
you don't need all of them for just importing the data.
      • 2005-04-01 09149, 2005

      • ruaok
most of the them relate to the use of the web site.
      • 2005-04-01 09107, 2005

      • ruaok
DBI and DBD::Pg are the most crucial ones.
      • 2005-04-01 09134, 2005

      • ruaok
to be safe, import the data into a clean/disposable DB that you're importing to.
      • 2005-04-01 09153, 2005

      • bmaury
yeah, i commented out all the stuff i thought i didn't need in MusicBrainz.pm, but i'm still missing String::Similarity
      • 2005-04-01 09110, 2005

      • ruaok
you don't need that for DB import.
