i want to install the musicbrainz tables in a database already populated with other tables, procedures, etc. i'm fairly sure there are no naming conflicts. any other problems with doing this?

bmaury: its been done -- the audioscrobbler's have done it.

awesome, thank you. we have a similar data model, with reviews linked to the artist, album and (hopefully) track. i wish i had come across your data about 3 months ago...
I'll stash the link for now. I'll read up on it in more detail later...

bmaury
cool. you guys are doing awesome work. i've been sitting on some of the mailing lists for a while, but didn't start checking out the data until yesterday. really impressive.
2005-04-01 09127, 2005
ruaok
thanks.
2005-04-01 09134, 2005
ruaok
we've come a looong way. that's for sure.
2005-04-01 09159, 2005
ruaok
there are some really dedicated people part of this project.

2005-04-01 09146, 2005
ruaok

2005-04-01 09156, 2005
bmaury
really?
2005-04-01 09157, 2005
cikkolata
wow, there's a date?
2005-04-01 09100, 2005
ruaok
have you played with them on the test server?
2005-04-01 09113, 2005
ruaok
djce and I are trying to pull together the plan.
2005-04-01 09121, 2005
bmaury
not yet. just got the live data set up.

we should have everything nailed down this weekend.
got it, and sent it out to two musicians (a sax player in the berkeley jazz band and a professional cellist) who are in my program (which deals with just this kind of organizational problem). i'm sure if they had more time, they'd help out. but we are all dealing with our theses. hopefully they will come back with some suggestions or contacts.
2005-04-01 09143, 2005
ruaok
awesome -- thanks mucho.
2005-04-01 09151, 2005
ruaok
and I look forward to reading more about your project.
2005-04-01 09102, 2005
bmaury
thanks, ruoak. hopefully i'll be able to pitch in to mb in a couple of months.
2005-04-01 09111, 2005
bmaury
er ruaok.
2005-04-01 09116, 2005
ruaok 'd love that
2005-04-01 09132, 2005
ruaok
I get up to Berkeley pretty often too.
2005-04-01 09116, 2005
bmaury
cool. i'm in sf. shoot me an email if you are in the area.

will do.

one more question for you: if i want to bypass the perl scripts, and just write a quick shell program to create and populate the tables, would i be able to figure out the proper order of the sql scripts in the mb_server/admin/sql directory, and then just load the data using \copy?
2005-04-01 09116, 2005
bmaury
or should i just try it?
2005-04-01 09155, 2005
ruaok
the perl scripts are *robust* and *fast*.
2005-04-01 09103, 2005
ruaok
I can't recommend them highly enough.
2005-04-01 09110, 2005
bmaury
yeah, they work great on my machine.
2005-04-01 09127, 2005
bmaury
but i don't have root at school, and i'm missing some modules...
2005-04-01 09142, 2005
ruaok
which modules?
2005-04-01 09128, 2005
bmaury
one sec...
2005-04-01 09141, 2005
ruaok
you don't need all of them for just importing the data.
2005-04-01 09149, 2005
ruaok
most of the them relate to the use of the web site.
2005-04-01 09107, 2005
ruaok
DBI and DBD::Pg are the most crucial ones.
2005-04-01 09134, 2005
ruaok
to be safe, import the data into a clean/disposable DB that you're importing to.
2005-04-01 09153, 2005
bmaury
yeah, i commented out all the stuff i thought i didn't need in MusicBrainz.pm, but i'm still missing String::Similarity
2005-04-01 09110, 2005
ruaok
you don't need that for DB import.
2005-04-01 09119, 2005
djce has quit
2005-04-01 09135, 2005
bmaury
ahh. okay. i figured i didn't.
2005-04-01 09138, 2005
cikkolata blinks
2005-04-01 09103, 2005
cikkolata
I don't remember needing to install anything (already had dbi) when I imported the data
2005-04-01 09110, 2005
cikkolata
trying to get apache to start... hah!
2005-04-01 09119, 2005
bmaury
he he.
2005-04-01 09137, 2005
bmaury
all i need is the data. we have our own app server.
2005-04-01 09136, 2005

2005-04-01 09155, 2005
cikkolata

2005-04-01 09106, 2005
ruaok
moin moin!
2005-04-01 09110, 2005
yalaforge
morgen!
2005-04-01 09131, 2005
yalaforge noticed another db import going on via the chatlogs :-)
2005-04-01 09124, 2005
cikkolata finds it amusing that yalaforge seems to sit reading the chatlogs rather than sit in here reading it normally
