take the carters: they took appalachian folk tunes, set either traditional or gospel lyrics to them, ma carter invented a (at the time brand new) way of plucking the banjo strings instead of strumming, thereby inadvertantly inventing bluegrass

laurie: i do music research for a living, and i'm a very proud black girl :)

lauri: while there are exceptions, you can generally tell what ethnicity (hates using race as it's inaccurate) by how someone sounds
