chillware
BrianFreud: pm sent
BrianFreud
oh, I meant in IRC :)
Can you see the msg I just sent? (Some IRC clients don't support PMs)
god... SO much freedb crappy add releases added in
chillware
BrianFreud: i get this error from the server, so i don't think PM's are working for me :s - Private messages from unregistered users are currently blocked due to spam problems, but you can always message a staffer. Please register!
BrianFreud
chillware: I'm not using MB for classical at the moment, but eventually I'll build it into my filenaming strings. Here's what I'm using currently for everything non-classical: http://dpaste.com/hold/9519/
chillware
I supose I should register
BrianFreud
chillware, gotcha - yeah, it takes about 10 seconds to register, then you can take pms :)
I put it on the pasteboard instead for ya :)
chillware
cool, looks good
a lot more to it than mine currently..
BrianFreud
:)
I had a lot of old original tagger files, where one release had split into 4 or 5 versions of the same release,
hence all the extra [] info I include
makes it easy to clean those back up
chillware
hmm, i like how you've got the date in there too
BrianFreud
yeah - originally I just used %date%, but it gets messy, cause you have a lot of incomplete dates
that string cuts it down to either just [year] or nothing, which is a lot cleaner
chillware
so i your music folder, you end with just album names, instead of artist - album?
BrianFreud
well, you get one of three results:
if it's a soundtrack, you get this: \Soundtracks\[official] [1951] Alice in Wonderland
if it's not, and it has a release date, you get this: \Alice in Chains\[album] [official] [1992] Dirt
otherwise you get this: \Alice in Chains\[single] [official] Angry Chair
oh, there's a \Music\ behind the 2 later examples
chillware
ahh, i see now..
i like it
BrianFreud
whenever I add in classicalm
it then would go to \Classical\Composer\(then however I decide to do it from here)
I just wish MB supported Old Time Radio - for the moment, I use Otter for OTR, and it goes into \OTR\
chillware
how big is your collection of music?
BrianFreud
around 1 TB
:P
chillware
nice, im about halfway there :)
BrianFreud
was larger, but I recently lost a 400 and a 300
didn't have backups :(
chillware
eww, thats what i fear most.. i run a raid 5 now, and building a 2nd machine later this week for an extra backup
i have a Thecus N5200B, works very well
BrianFreud
yeah, I have part of mine on RAID5, but these were new drives, moved off some drives I didn;t trust, trashed the old drives
the new 2 drives died within 2 months of purchase :(
chillware
:(
BrianFreud
both Seagates
chillware
what kind of music do you collect?
my seagates seem to be working well.. ive converted to them from WD
all 7200.10 500gb's
BrianFreud
hmmm, it's a lot of types - I have a small list at my wiki site - but pretty much anything, except for most country and all gospel
just have to finish the last 200 or so albums not in mb, and ID the random files
hmmmm... depends if you count in the 32 kbps OTR
without, prob 5 or 6 months
warp
ofcourse!
BrianFreud
with, prob 2 years?
warp
hehe
warp has 32 days, with about 80gb
BrianFreud
lol
warp, I know this is rhetorical, but why do newbies import so much unfixed crap from freedb with no proof links?
lol
warp
the no proof links is easy, that's just too much work when import/add lots... the edits usually go through anyway.
i usually don't add proof links until i'm asked to.
BrianFreud
I know... just having to clean up and ask too often on some of this crap
warp
s/import/you import/
BrianFreud
some guy imported 5 albums in English with full caps
"guess case didn;'t fix it so I assumed it was ok"
warp
just vote no.
get the lazy bastards :)
BrianFreud
I just slap em with the standard string...
"Please provide a link to an online store with this release so we can verify it. Thanks!" with an abstain til they give me something
some guy actually gave me piratebay.org as a proof link
lol
warp
why an online store?
BrianFreud
because when I didn't specify, I was seeing too many torrent trackers
warp
oh, i would vote NO on the uppercase stuff you mentioned. it's too much work to change later, better to have them try again properly.
BrianFreud
I fixed 4 of them, then slapped him when he ignored me and kept adding anyhow
warp
:)
BrianFreud
prob more patience on my part than it was worth...
warp nods.
but I was tired of the Nirvana edits :P
BrianFreud has started to notice how many edits slip though with one or two votes... wonders again if the number of voters vs editors needs something to fix the ratio
2200 editors, 177 voters...
warp
yes, the voters vs editors is a problem.
i enabled inline votes to vote a little bit more on my subscribed artists.
but in general i don't vote much either.
BrianFreud
I myself am guilty... I first registerd in 2005. I added a bunch of releases, no attention to styleguides, and had a bunch of votes go against me (evern though some actually, wierdly enough, match with current guidelines).
Then I came back in 2006, same thing.
This time, I got interested in what was going on behind the tagger, and I started to try to figure things out.
dwg
hrm
BrianFreud
Problem is, it's too easy to add a release with no clue of how things work, then everyone else ends up having to clean up the mess, esp when they slip through because < 3 votes.
I mean, looking at the open English add releases only, there werr 1650 of them, 100+ expiring tomorrow with 1 or 0 votes on any...
and a lot of them look... off.
warp
they do?
i would assume most are more or less ok (but incomplete), there's not _that_ much you can fuck up on a normal english tracklisting :)
BrianFreud
no guess case, all lowercase, freedb imports with no status or script set and no proof, all uppercase imports, stuff using torrent sites as "proof", etc
dwg
I found when I joined I voted plenty the first few weeks, then stopped entirely because I was too darn sick of these hundreds of vote requests every day
BrianFreud
The other string I end up using a lot is "Is there a reason we're ignoring the capitalization style guidelines on this release? If not, please remmeber to use guess case."
dwg: maybe... I know I've made it to number 1 without trying... but getting frustrated with the amounts of signal to noise...
warp
BrianFreud: good work! :)
dwg
a "catch up" feature might be useful
BrianFreud
hw do you mean?
dwg
which abstains from all outstanding subscribed votes
so you can get back to voting on new edits without having to work through an enormous backlog
warp
dwg: they'll automatically expire anyway :)
dwg
warp: eventually
BrianFreud
not really
dwg
not quickly enough, to prevent a hugh backlog
s/hugh/huge/
BrianFreud
how many times have you gone to figure out how a release got in in the first place,
dwg
and by that time more votes will have come in
BrianFreud
only to find it got in because it had 1 or 0 votes on expire?
dwg
more clumping of edits would help, but I imagine that's not easy to implement on the db side
BrianFreud
I just fixed a bunch of VA releases today where someone randomly chose the first "Nirvana" in the list, rather than look to figure which was right
so you had 60's compilations with a track attrib'd to a 90's grunge band
every one got in with 1 yes vote
warp
haha, ouch.
BrianFreud
dwg: I could see that for batch ARs, say "X wrote Y for every Y in this batch"
dwg
yeah, there are some others
BrianFreud
but not for adds and such
dwg
which I've forgotten since I was actively voting
basically I did a lot of mb stuff when I first signed up, then have done hardly any since I finished the vacation I was on at the time
BrianFreud
I just wonder, as much as we all argue over the fine points, and as much as we all concentrate on our own pet projects (jazz, classical, Nirvana, what have you)
how much of the rest of the db is slowly turning to muck?
dwg
I should probably trim my subscribed list way down and actually get back to voting on something at least
warp
dwg: i recommend enabling inline votes.
dwg
inline votes?
BrianFreud
seconded
warp
dwg: in preferences
dwg
what does that do?
BrianFreud
it shows a vote at the top of the screen all the time
