        jdlh: sorry, was afk
      • it goes and tries to find info on whatever release you're looking at. Just right now, it's a very very raw results list.
      • dholmes_
        brianfreud: that is pretty ill
      • jdlh
"find info" meaning searching out in various useful places on the Web?
      • dholmes_
        Pretty much
      • It would be cool if it had a "create this edit" option
      • brianfreud
        yes
      • that's where it eventually is going... like I said, very very alpha ;)

It already comes up with all sorts of useful information like: "talking heads are you fucking kidding me there not hardcore screemo and shyt they fucking suck! dam tails .... Talking Heads kill ever"
      • brianfreud
Right now, though, the results were good enough, at least that you can sort of see them amidst the mess, I figured some people might already be able to use it.
      • lol
      • dholmes_
Some of the other ones are pretty cool though ;)
      • brianfreud
well, it's trying everywhere, which pretty much, until I start to get in and filter some more, means it's almost guaranteed to also have false positives on some places, where people are comparing (to/against) a Jamendo band, for example
      • kind of cool to pull up a release with next to nothing - no events, no times, no anything, and see decent fixes though :)

ruaok: you might find this interesting. Though, I'd add a 9th to the list; it's also the same one I think applies most to MB: "Quality" (I think that's a bit different than "Trust") - http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/kelly08/kelly08...
      • (I'd suggest, of the others, "Accessibility" (using the data) and "Findability" (indexing the data in ways that are helpful) are perhaps the two others that matter most to MB development)

Picard's being irritating - any idea how to get it to accept tagging commands on port 8001 again? It worked, then I opened another instance and closed it, and now it doesn't
      • luks
        you can't
      • start a new search from picard and it will update the site to use 8000
      • workaphobia
oh, I see. So if I bind something to use 8000, then run picard again, that instance will bind on 8001...
      • luks
yes, it tries ports from 8000 until it finds a free one
      • workaphobia
That works, thanks, I didn't realize 8000 was the default

hm, we need some style guide for writing disambiguation comments
      • like caps or no trailing period
      • brianfreud
I always figured sentence caps and no trailing period
      • luks
yep, but not everybody uses that
      • brianfreud
        true
      • GC for disambigs? :)
      • luks
some pople write it all lowercase
      • or "A band from UK" vs. "UK band"
      • brianfreud
        agreed
      • mudcrow
it needs to be short, sweet and to the point
      • brianfreud
actually, though, the one I thing I wish is that we could require the disambig on both ends
      • mudcrow
problem is with some artists it very hard to write a comment with enough detail to distinguish it, especially all those trance artists who use the same aliases
      • brianfreud
"UK band" may not help me, when it comes to "UK band" vs "", and really should be "Dublin band" vs "London band"
      • CatCat
or two bands fom the same country with simialr styles
      • ho yes
      • had this
      • brianfreud
you may not know the one band well, but if you know them enough to ID they're not the one you want, you can write a 3 word disambig for them
      • Tykling
agreed, but if the two bands are clearly from two different countries, "a danish rapper" or similar on both ought to be enough I think
      • brianfreud
yes, but I'm referring to the "Disambig" vs "blank" - could be any situation
      • Tykling
yeah, there should be disambiguation notes on both ends
      • not sure what to do about the tough cases with very genre-wise similar artists with the same names, who are these people and why are they being so difficult
      • nikki_ has quit
      • nikki joined the channel
      • mudcrow
I prefer to use Country, Genre and wel known release for them, in most cases they have only released a couple of records
      • warp often doesn't even know the country for the artist he's writing the disambig note for :(
      • like A.K.A. (UK garage/electro, released Warning) & A.K.A. (side project of Information Society, released Cruel Lovin') & A.K.A. (happy hardcore released Nuttiest Sound & Coming From The Top)
      • they seem to work better than just (is an alias of) etc. or (UK trance)
      • I usually have problems identifying the correct artist on VA releases, and not knowing the artists well comments such as AKA (alias of Paul Neville) are bloody useless
      • warp
        really?
      • as long as it disambiguates IMO :)
      • luks
if you have trance artists who released only a single track (and there is a lot of them), it's much easier to just use the track title for disambiguation
      • warp
genre is a bit vague, so i can understand objections to that. but alias of 'name' seems pretty decent.
      • luks: ah, yes.
      • mudcrow
except that alias of name rquires the user to have a fairly indepth knowledge of the artist. while using a track title as the comment is almost idiot proof
      • drsaunde
i hate when they have "release album" or "key track"
      • warp
mudcrow: seems the other way around to me personally.
      • (i'm not that good at remembering track titles :)
      • luks
but when you are adding a VA release you have the track title in front of you :)
      • mudcrow
I'm speaking of those artists that only release one or two tracks, so the comment will match the track you are entering
      • Infinito_ joined the channel
      • drsaunde
in that case yes i agree
      • warp
luks: er, usually i'm adding a new artist artist, not selecting one of several existing. :S
      • drsaunde
but there are many that don't fit that case yet still have a "key track" that isn't even close the most represented on on VA comp

I am trying to add a danish album with a barcode that apparently isn't standard, the number is "7 24382 16142 4", should I just check the "this is a different type of barcode" box ?
      • oh, nevermind :)
      • Tykling hides
      • mudcrow
I wish we had a better way of identifying artists, getting a huge list of similar named artists can be overwhelming at times and sometimes makes it very difficult to spot the artist you want.
