luks: would it be at all possible to be able to search within edits? like for artist-url in add relationships or say, time changes in a merged edit track edit
      • Freso
lauri: It's been a long, long time since I've had to wait more than 24 hours to have a merge go through.
      • lauri
freso: i thought it was an obvious one too, but he'll vote no (and that was open more than 24 hours and got one single no vote)
      • bad timing, i guess, easter holiday
      • Freso
lauri: I wasn't around for your promotion of the Happy Merge in the channel. :)
      • lauri
if you wanna try it again, i'll yes bomb it, sure
      • i don't normally ask for votes in here
      • luks
nikki: I'm thinking about adding edit type flags to the moderation table
      • so that edit types will be separate from the code (the current edit types) that handles them
      • and it would be possible to search for specific AR edits, too
      • lauri
i'm not particularly asking for them now, i'm just checking my even wanting to merge it is not completely insane
      • Freso
      • ojnkpjg
i think not wanting to merge it is insane
      • given what we've got now
      • Freso
lauri: I don't either. Just for merges, to get the duplicate artist(s) removed ASAP.
      • yllona
ojnkpjg: that could be. but as a card-carrying member of the michael jackson fan club from 1969, thru the 1980s. i beg someone to try. and yes fan clubs issued printed wallet cards back in the day :)
      • nikki
luks: if we had something like that so we can still search for specific things, I don't see why merged types would be such a problem for people

      • If people are quick(!) to vote on http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=8512480 - it'll go through within minutes.
      • zoke
why is it merging into Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson and not the other way around ?
      • Freso
Or, wait. I think my clock needs to be sync'ed.
      • zoke: Paul and MJ has more information related to them and is an older entry.
      • *is the older
      • nikki
the only thing I can think of is if there are some good edits and some bad edits within the same one... but that's always a problem
      • ojnkpjg
yeah, i'd say the one with more edit history should always be merge target
      • and then adjusted to be correct, if necessary, after the merge
      • nikki
you could do a normal edit track name now and correct one thing and make something else bad
      • aCiD2
        Freso: py_mb_server!
      • zoke
        Freso, ok then voting yes
      • aCiD2
        :)
      • Freso
        aCiD2: OMGYES!
      • nikki
I thought edit history was merged when artists were merged?
      • aCiD2
        and welcome back
      • haha
      • Freso
        aCiD2: Thank you. :)
      • ojnkpjg
i think it's lost for the merged artist
      • aCiD2
        Was it good?
      • Freso
        aCiD2: Awesome.
      • ojnkpjg
        but i could be wrong
      • aCiD2
        cool
      • Freso
Pictures coming up any day. :)
      • aCiD2
        :)
      • Freso
Oh, whoa! I just noticed the "Edit Rel. Types". I'd completely forgotten about that. :p
      • aCiD2 pops off to the shops, back in 10 or so
      • lauri
heh, let's see if that gets through before he notices it then
      • ojnkpjg
kind of a cheap trick :P
      • but bad timing
      • still 50 minutes before the hour
      • lauri
i feel a little underhanded doing it heh
      • Freso
ojnkpjg: Yeah. Ten minutes earlier would have been excellent.
      • ojnkpjg
i think it's obviously enough the right thing to do in this case, though
      • lauri
either way, the collab ar's are unecessary
      • ojnkpjg
        yep
      • Freso
Yeah. It is. (And I wouldn't care if Paul & MJ are renamed MJ & Paul, but they *are* the older entry.)
      • lauri
so i leaving my no vote on those
      • ojnkpjg
it's not like there's a notion of primacy on those
      • lauri
i don't care either, that was the point i was trying to get through to him heh
      • ojnkpjg
even if people wrongly perceive one based on order
      • lauri
nobody _but_ him actually cares, certainly not based on 'who sings first in the song', if he really wants to edit the order, go ahead
      • it's the duplication that's dumb, not the artist name order
      • Infinito_ has quit
      • yllona
okay, folks on the michael jackson/paul mccartney collabs: the album owner gets first marquee -- end of story. as for msuic publishing (ie composer), that's another story. those rights are *heavily negotiated*. it's not about "who sings first"
      • BrianFreud has quit
      • BrianFreud joined the channel
      • lauri
I had a suspicion that was so, but wasn't sure enough to bring it up in the edit
      • yllona
and "who sings first" is also part of the negotiation
      • so for those two artists especially, it's all contractual -- not artistic :)
      • lauri
so the jackson / mccartney order is actually the correct one
      • yllona
        yep.
      • you'll notice that the music publishing may have a slightly different order :)
      • lauri
no point editing it now, i'd have to think up a disambig comment
      • but as soon as that merge is done
      • yllona
but then michael bought the beatles catalog in it's entirety
      • actually that was part of the deal, michael had the where with all to buy the catalog, and paul mccartney was like -- WTF? how did this happen.
      • yllona reminds the internet kiddies that long before michael jackson became a freak, he was brilliant business man
      • lauri
heh, i get a little stabbing pain every time i hear one of those old songs and remember that cute wee boy turned into such a frooty loop
      • but yeah, he wasn't stupid either, some of those deals were genius
      • yllona
        lauri: yes, it's really sad

      • BrianFreud
yllona: just caught up on the scrollback; That may be the order on albums, but my understanding was we just use alphabetical order....
      • nikki joined the channel
      • no "who sang first" or "who owns the album" or anything like that - just "we know it's a hack until we can do it right with multiple artists"
      • yllona
BrianFreud: then that's a major problem
      • lauri_
alphabetical order? that's a new one on me
      • i use whatever order is on the album i'm adding them from
      • and if someone says 'but they're much more commonly credited other way around', and shows me some cites, i wouldn't argue with that either
      • yllona
but for the michael jackson / paul mccartney collabs. michael jacson first. really no discusion needed her.
      • BrianFreud
lauri: that works all the way until the order's different on the next track / release
      • yllona
        *here
      • lauri_
if the next one is a compilation, i don't care heh, i just use the existing artist entry
      • mikemorr has quit
      • and i find the order rarely reverses between actual releases by actual collabs, if they're doing whole albums together
      • BrianFreud
me either; it's a hack, the order long-term is meaningless anyhow
      • aCiD2 returns
      • lauri_
        i mean, c s & n, didn't randomly switch their names around on albums
      • BrianFreud
oh, I don't mean that type of & - Peter, Paul and Mary, etc.
      • lauri_
but it's very difficult to tell them apart sometimes
      • BrianFreud
I mean "John Bob & Foo Smith & Bar Cruise" etc
      • lauri_
so going with what's on the cover i've got, is the best i can do
      • mikemorr joined the channel
      • BrianFreud
btw, lauri, you were looking for me about 10 hours ago?
      • lauri_

      • Freso
        aCiD2: Wb.

      • lauri_
        oh i know
      • aCiD2
Freso: can do Jabber (would like to convert to jabber, too many msn friends though)
      • Freso pretty much only runs Jabber on this machine - everything on the other one
      • Freso
        aCiD2: freso.dk at gmail
      • aCiD2
        okies
      • lauri_
now that i did all my subscribed artists with your shiny happy cd baby script, i got a bunch more busted ones
      • aCiD2
Freso: I think I've ended up inviting you to gmail o.O
      • lauri_
ooooh, and while i was there, i found an album i must buy (And you might want for your niece yllona)
      • BrianFreud
yeah, I'm hearing that from a lot of people; I think CD Baby seriously screwed up generating maybe 20-30% of their tocs
      • yllona
        lauri: please?
      • lauri_
      • Freso
aCiD2: Haha. I'll be sure to decline. :p

      • lauri_

      • how could you not love that
      • oh heh, that's three different songs, oh well, i'm buying it anyway
      • yllona
