How does one reliably find the release date for something? If the copyright date isn’t reliable, what else is there?

sometimes you can find release dates on label websites

hawke_1: A lot of more recent ones have Facebook events for release parties etc., so you can dig through Facebook pages' events.

or artist websites

hawke_1: Hint, if the site says 1700 or earlier, it's most likely wrong.

I actually usually use copyright date unless it’s obviously wrong.

or discogs, ’cos they’re trustworthy.

I use it if there's no better data or contradicting data available.

But I have no idea where they get their info from, or if it’s just a guess like I am doing. :-)

a lot of them seem awfully precise for being just a guess, but still.

2nd to 3rd are a much bigger leap.
