CallerNo6: I don't think using wikidata to get geonames ID#s is going to be a good idea
      • it's looking right now that over half of the geonames ID#s they have there are wrong, looks like they were added by a bot (wrong area but same name or very close), just an fyi that we shouldn't piggyback that bad data or high percentage of bad data
      • CallerNo6
akk. what are you looking at?
      • Are you just spot-checking?
      • hibiscuskazeneko joined the channel
      • drsaunde
yes well i'm getting my wikidata URL first, then from that url if it has a geonames # listed there...i load that number in geodata to see if it actually matches the area in question
      • success rate 50percent so fat

        blech.
      • I honestly never checked, just did manual searches. Good to know.
      • drsaunde
last couple have matched..but 3 out of first 6 didn't....being new i just didn't want to just accept their IDs so i checked them
      • CallerNo6

Anyone have an opinion on https://musicbrainz.org/edit/36192329 ?
      • mildused
        hawke1, Bonnet not Bonnett
      • hawke1
More specifically does fixing "the Spirit of the Radio" fall under error correction, since it's not a spelling/punctuation/grammar error.
      • mildused
hawke1, It is a valid edit
      • Actually. It is Spirit of Radio. I just checked.
      • hawke1
        I know it is.
      • I voted yes on it because of the other portions of the edit
      • mildused
        hawke1, We will see...
      • CallerNo6
hawke1, I think of track titles as 'recording credits' if that's your question.
      • hawke1
CallerNo6: I tend to agree, but how far does that go? The song clearly has a correct name
      • CallerNo6
Yeah, now you've got me wondering too.
      • hawke1
It doesn't *clearly* fall under error correction
      • "spelling and punctuation and, to a lesser extent, grammar errors"
      • but at the same time it's definitely not artist intent either.

have you ever seen a correction to fix *grammar*?

      • fucking 504s
      • I can't submit my votes because the goddamn server is timing out!
      • Is this deliberate
      • ?
      • darwin
hibiscuskazeneko: yes, it's rejecting you, personally, because it knows it's you!!!
      • CallerNo6
deliberate? like the server hates you?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
Or someone filed complaints against me and it's stymying what I can do
      • darwin
yes, some mysterious powerful person filed "complaints" against you, and we all collectively decided the appropriate response would be to make some subset of your interaction with the site give 504 HTTP server errors
      • that's exactly what happened, you got it in ne.
      • *one
      • hibiscuskazeneko
We now have a report function.
      • darwin
therefore the above is totally plausible now!
      • hibiscuskazeneko
      • CallerNo6 doesn't know anybody who doesn't like hibiscuskazeneko
      • hibiscuskazeneko knows quite a few editors
      • darwin also doesn't know anyone who doesn't like hibiscuskazeneko
      • most of them don't come on here
      • darwin
but yeah, in summary, 504 errors are just that... errors. don't take them personally.
      • hibiscuskazeneko
There are ways to feign the appearance of errors (when you're actually doing something else)
      • One ISP was feigning 404s for blocked pages a few years ago, for example
      • darwin
      • hibiscuskazeneko
The reason I'm suspicious is because I was able to vote on a different artist just a few minutes prior
      • darwin
but you know that the site often features intermittent failures
      • where action [x] at time [a] works, but action [x-like-y] at time [b] does not
      • hibiscuskazeneko
Often times I'm told those failures are on my end only
      • darwin
no, you're told that they are not reproducable, which is a very different thing
      • intermittent failure is most likely to affect heavy users, and to be noticed by them
      • you are a 99th percentile user?
      • therefore anyone you mention a failure to is less likely than you are to encounter one?
      • CallerNo6
blah blah blah logic blah blah. what it comes down to is, you're a good editor and people respect your work.
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        a select few don't
      • darwin
fortunately in a collective context of mostly-equal peers, the view of a select few doesn't hold that much sway
      • certainly not enough sway to convince the maintainers of the software to patch it in order to add features designed to subtly fuck with you?
      • first because that would be a very complex way to deal with any particular beef with you instead of addressing you directly
      • and second because the existence of such a feature would dramatically negatively impact community-wide trust, which would be a very dear price to pay to punish you for whatever reason?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
The feature was added because of certain editors who just do what they want and ignore everyone else
      • darwin
I'm with CallerNo6, we actually really like and appreciate you, and while no community will have only fans, especially when there's stuff to "actually disagree" about
      • hibiscuskazeneko: the hypothetical feature you describe does not exist, but if it did, why would the project engage in such duplicity?
      • hibiscuskazeneko: why would it expend the effort of being so duplicitous and scheming when more direct methods would work, and require less effort?
      • hibiscuskazeneko
"There’s a way to report editors for bad behavior, from their user profiles. The reports will be sent to our https://musicbrainz.org/privileged. We’d prefer people use this method from now on for reporting unresponsive editors, or for any https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Code_of_Conduct violations. Account admins have also received an easy way to restrict a user’s editing/voting capabilities."
      • I can see how that can be abused
      • darwin
sure, all systems of collective heriarchy can be abused
      • it is impossible to define a system in such a way that it cannot be abused
      • therefore your statement is null
      • hibiscuskazeneko
My point is someone may have made complaints about me and I'm now being stymied
      • darwin
the fact that a system can be abused does not mean that arbitrary bad things that happen to you, afraid of being abused, are signs of the system being abused
      • yes, you are connecting your fear ("someone may have made complaints about me") with an arbitrary bad thing that is happening
      • the connection seems very real to you, probably due to the intensity of the fear
      • but to others it seems very, very unlikely, including for the reasons explicated above
      • and we (at least I) feel concern for you because feeling such intense fear, and connecting unconnected things via that fear, must be unpleasant for you
      • tl;dr - 504 are just 504s, no one is messing with you.
      • hibiscuskazeneko
It's happened to me on other sites
      • darwin
the fact that it has happened before, including to you, does not mean it is happening again
      • or that its happening is very likely in a generic sense
      • I understand that you are afraid of it happening to you again
      • but it's ok? :D
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        I guess...
      • darwin
I reiterate what others have said, I like you and appreciate your contribution
      • and I'm certainly not giving you 504s! :D
