Freso: There was a user connecting and disconnecting every few minutes between 0:03 and 1:09 UTC, I guess that was the reason why people were calling. :)
But the issue self-resolved, apparently.
Freso
Ah. Yeah. My client hides joins and parts by default, so I don't see connectivity issues.

Freso (about channel opping), somebody's connection was going crazy with the quit-join-quit thing.
when will we have genres ? Is it coming after the next schema changes ?
Freso
bitmap: ^
Lotheric: Soon™
Lotheric
:)
with genres I guess it'll be easier to browse critiquebrainz for reviews
CallerNo6
oh, right, when I asked if there was a genre roadmap, rob said "you should work with bitmap to write something up".
I'd totally do that if/when bitmap has a few minutes to spare.

I knew it was discussed at summit,,, I was just wondering if we were waiting for something in the schema changes
chirlu
The table for the official list of tags that are genres.
regagain has quit
CallerNo6
oh, should I be working with chirlu instead?
chirlu
Uh, I don’t see the workload here …
CallerNo6
I'd like to do a write up of how genres will be implemented, because it's asked often enough.
So I need somebody to interview. Interrogate?
gibbon_
hi
just a quick question... is it just me or is working with picard becoming hard for everybody? i keep getting more 503 errors than requests going through...
chirlu
CallerNo6: There will be a list of strings naming possible genres (like “rock”, “classical”). If you tag an entity with a string from this list, it’s thought to be that genre. Fin.
CallerNo6
haha. that's shorter than the list of questions I was typing.
I do seem to notice responsiveness when editing being very variable; are there some badly-behaved apps/sites/... sending fairly large bursts of requests? just seems odd to have snappy responsiveness for 45 seconds and then 5 minutes of crawling if it's consistently heavy load
<insert Offics Space picture here> yeah, if regular users could just stop using MB while I'm editing, that'd be great :P
gibbon_
is this a polularity vs. funds thing?
Zastai
bandwidth always is gibbon
CallerNo6
chirlu, meaning no schema change at all? It'll be done in page templates or js?
gibbon_
i read about a 30MBit/s commitment ... considering that I know whole hosting companies that would be happy to have that. that is quite a number
chirlu
CallerNo6: Except for the list of genre tags, yes.
gibbon_: Yes, that’s the limit.
CallerNo6
chirlu, thanks. Got it (I think).
gibbon_
thanks for all the details
CallerNo6
Now I can interrogate reosarevok about the list itself.
chirlu
I predict “rock” and “classical” will be on it. :-)
CallerNo6
Those aren't music genres. They're editor genres.
reosarevok
Wasn't the idea to have a separate field to enter genres from, even if they're stored as tags like the others?
krono has quit
chirlu
Possibly.
CallerNo6
The interesting thing (to me) is that you won't be able to ask the ws for genres. You'll ask for tags, compare to the list, and figure it out for yourself. IIUC.
In other words, something you could already be doing with your own list.
chirlu
In principle, yes. (Though it would be possible to have a separate “genre-tags” WS include or something.)
CallerNo6
Oh, right, of course.
chirlu
But I think the hope is that an “official” list of genres, which is featured on the website and used by Picard etc., will make more people use them, add them and vote on them.
CallerNo6
So, auto-completion would go a long way toward making that happen.
Freso
gibbon_: We're in the process of moving to a different data center, but MetaBrainz is quite a big operation, so it's not exactly something that can just be done overnight. :)

Freso: working in hosting myself and currently migrating data centers across europe this is understood quite well. I hope it works out.
CallerNo6
reosarevok, is anybody talking about i18n w/r/t the genre list?
(With Respect To) ^
reosarevok
That's... a good question
Not that I can remember.
CallerNo6
I mean, I guess the list itself is relatively easy to translate (to the extent that the terms are translatable)
Actually, I said "translate" but transliterate might be more relevant.
Like with the artist alias question, I don't care about the locale so much as the alphabet.
Lotheric
I hope we'll stay away from genres that aren't genres (like world, indie, urban..)
krono joined the channel
CallerNo6
Lotheric, I agree that those don't seem to be genera (plural of genus), but they are descriptive
Lotheric
we can have a discussion about genres when we finally have them I guess :)
as long as there's a post-neo-funk-goth-punk-a-billy genre tag, i'll be happy :D
CallerNo6
I like tags that make me sad.
Lotheric
<3 xkcd
CallerNo6
Sad*der*.

love that xkcd link yes

Now that I have some people here anyway: on the Belgica soundtrack (http://musicbrainz.org/release/f69100b9-214d-49...), Soulwax appear as 15 fictitious bands (from the film). Currently I have those bands as ACs for Soulwax - would the preference be to create actual artist entries for these instead?
