Hi there! I found a CD in my cupboard recently which seems to have never been properly indexed or databased, I searched on musicbrainz and freedb and found nothing, also the CDs don't come up with any info when scanning with common ripping software that autocomplete tags from such services.
15:05 PM
It's all in chinese but I was able to get the track names via OCR and manual correction (using some Hanzi radical dictionaries), but wasn't able to discern any artist names, nor be 100% sure of what the "proper" album name should be
15:05 PM
I made full scans of the case and booklet, and was advised that if I ask here, someone might be able to go through it and make a proper musicbrainz submission
15:06 PM
(uploading now to a public filehost)

15:18 PM
Hmm. Is there a way to generate a CUE /with metadata/ from my folder of FLACs? I tried using shntool with no joy...

Meanwhile I still haven't worked out a way to export the metadata of all my files for easy comparison with my scanned album art/covers

aphirst, what OS? exfalso has a couple plugins for exporting tags. (not an endorsement, I haven't tried it)
16:49 PM
aphirst
linux, and i do vaguely recall exfalso, wasnt that a companion application to quodlibet?
16:50 PM
Yaniel
a rough solution would bbe ffprobe + sed
16:52 PM
CallerNo6
aphirst, yeah,exactly
16:54 PM
aphirst
CallerNo6, good call, the plugin gave me what i needed
16:55 PM
16:55 PM
16:56 PM
i used it on my local opus copy but the metadata is identical to my flacs
16:56 PM
the year is a pure guess based on some similar albums and roughly when i bought the CD
16:56 PM
if the album art mentions a year anywhere it isn't in arabic numerals
17:00 PM
i put a decent amount of effort into making sure the tags were the same symbols as on the artwork, especially when it was a variant character
17:00 PM
and i used chinese punctuation instead of latin
17:00 PM
⻣ was particularly problematic
17:02 PM
For the record i think the writing system is beautiful.

in the abstract, nothing is wrong with opus. in practice, lol.
17:43 PM
in the abstract, nothing is wrong with GNU Hurd or freeBSD either.
17:45 PM
aphirst
darwin, i use opus ~160kbps for my "all devices" playback copies
17:46 PM
i.e. on my rockbox, my phone, and a syncthing folder on my laptops
17:46 PM
the FLACs stay on the big disks at home
17:48 PM
darwin
(yes, I know, that's why people like you do what you're doing, to save 15% or whatever on their car insurance^W^Wdisk space on mobile devices)
17:48 PM
aphirst
with the audio equipment i actually use on a daily basis, it's transparent
17:48 PM
darwin
(it's not actually a bad idea in that case, I just find it funny because I'm kinda jerky on this subject)
17:48 PM
aphirst
and takes up 1/5 the space
17:49 PM
it's not like i delete the FLACs
17:49 PM
if someone wants to donate me some >200GB microSD cards and some expensive headphones so i can use FLAC daily, they can feel free
17:49 PM
darwin
I'm aware that my lulz are not, ultimately, anything but me saying "wow, almost no one does this otherwise sensible thing"
17:50 PM
aphirst
i despair at how many of the albums i'm still looking for have been ripped once at mp3 320 and nothing else
17:50 PM
darwin
the same lulz are really available if I want to laugh at anyone for storing physical copies of digital music in, say, FLAC
17:50 PM
Dr-Flay
WACUP for Winamp now comes with an opus encoder as it is trying to be a bit forward thinking
17:50 PM
darwin
including, you know, myself
17:51 PM
aphirst
mp3 320 is barely smaller than flac but barely any better sounding than v0
17:51 PM
darwin
yep, but for example DJs end up using it anyway because the world of consumer DJ technology supports MP3 and does not support FLAC
17:52 PM
aphirst
that's really dumb
17:52 PM
darwin
even though new equipment does in fact support FLAC, one can't assume that one will be playing on that equipment, and so one still has to use MP3
17:53 PM
aphirst
surely the free market will solve it
17:53 PM
Dr-Flay
the software we use at the radio station I have a show on, is pro radio software yet only recognises MP3s
17:53 PM
darwin
on the one hand, it's dumb.. on the other hand it's the reality of how vanishingly few people care
17:53 PM
aphirst
(cough)
17:53 PM
darwin
the free market *has* "solved" it
17:53 PM
the consumers have decided they don't care
17:53 PM
problem solved
