Hi there! I found a CD in my cupboard recently which seems to have never been properly indexed or databased, I searched on musicbrainz and freedb and found nothing, also the CDs don't come up with any info when scanning with common ripping software that autocomplete tags from such services.

It's all in chinese but I was able to get the track names via OCR and manual correction (using some Hanzi radical dictionaries), but wasn't able to discern any artist names, nor be 100% sure of what the "proper" album name should be

I made full scans of the case and booklet, and was advised that if I ask here, someone might be able to go through it and make a proper musicbrainz submission

i used it on my local opus copy but the metadata is identical to my flacs

the year is a pure guess based on some similar albums and roughly when i bought the CD

if the album art mentions a year anywhere it isn't in arabic numerals

i put a decent amount of effort into making sure the tags were the same symbols as on the artwork, especially when it was a variant character

and i used chinese punctuation instead of latin

yep, but for example DJs end up using it anyway because the world of consumer DJ technology supports MP3 and does not support FLAC

even though new equipment does in fact support FLAC, one can't assume that one will be playing on that equipment, and so one still has to use MP3

surely the free market will solve it

the software we use at the radio station I have a show on, is pro radio software yet only recognises MP3s

on the one hand, it's dumb.. on the other hand it's the reality of how vanishingly few people care
