Do you mean if we think MB should *make* genre specific dbs obsolete, or whether we should obsolete/deprecate linking to them?

Freso
In the first case, yes, absolutely—but it’s not our call to make what other people do. In the second case, no, absolutely not. We should link to more, if anything!

CatQuest: Woo, I just upgraded JIRA to version 8 (as announced two weeks ago), I’m glad that lighter grey is the only change that troubled you ;)

yvanzo: sorry for bitching at you. I have asbergers so, any change (especially unannounced) is difficult 😅
My mom wants to catalog her vinyl records. There's ~500 of them and almost all don't have barcodes. What do you think would be the best way to do this? I'm thinking of using Beets and making a plugin that lets her fill in title + catalog number then select the matching release from the MusicBrainz results that Beets returns.

I don't think she'll care about matching perfectly (as long as it's in the same release group I think we're okay). I would've expected there to be a photo identification tool, but I guess Google hasn't got around to making that. ;) (Cross posted in MusicBrainz & Beets irc)

ballerin: does she want to rip and tag them? Or literally just "have a list"?
2019-04-06 09648, 2019
ballerin
literally just a list/db

ballerin
if she wanted to rip them I would tell her to not do that :p
2019-04-06 09617, 2019
reosarevok
Then she could just have a collection on MB itself

Discogs would also work, they have a lot of vinyl and it'd make it easier for her to sell some later if desired. It would also make it easier for her to spend more money on it though, so there's that danger :p

haha yeah. I did look at discogs but wasn't impressed over musicbrainz, plus MB is more extensible and open

(I personally think some of their rules, like All Caps For Everything, are stupid, but can't hate on the amount of vinyl data)

I'm hoping 95% of these albums are mainstream enough for musicbrainz. beatles and that kind of thing
I want this to be a quick process for adding releases to one's collection. I see I could use a URL like this: https://musicbrainz.org/collection/[collectionID]… . but then there's still the matter of searching the MB database. which beets is well tailored for and has a semi-sophisticated distance algorithm

I mean, I dunno how well beets' search works compared to just the MB SOLR search
