okay, so it's time to make my first contribution to musicbrainz. i just these guys' discography https://nishaiar.bandcamp.com/ , i have picard and chromaprint installed, what do i do next?
      • *bought
      • darwin
the easiest way to get started is to install the bandcamp importer script for your browser
      • and then do a workflow where you use the bandcamp release as a template for new releases in musicbrainz, and then tag your files with that release
      • there is also a submission flow via picard, but I don't know anything about that, unfortunately
      • treeshateorcs
thanks! i will try the extension first and report back
      • SothoTalKer
darwin: i import the release from discogs if available, then attach the DiscID - saves a bit of typing :P
      • then i rip the CD with EAC, then I use Picard to link AcoustIDs and for metadata, then I use AB extractor to submit AB info XD
      • treeshateorcs
        >You haven’t entered a complete artist credit.
      • what does it want from me?
      • SothoTalKer
you need to make it green
      • treeshateorcs
        i figured that much
      • ah
      • done
      • SothoTalKer
MusicBrainz relies heavily on linked entities. since names can sometimes slightly differ or multiple artists share a name, you need to link the underlying ID
      • same for releases and albums and recordings and works ^^
      • treeshateorcs
i had to capitalize the artists name
      • and it turned green
      • SothoTalKer
you can click on edit and use the slightly extended menu to select and artist and add a "credited as" name
      • common example is "The Beatles" when they are sometimes just credited as "Beatles" or "The Beetles" etc :P
      • treeshateorcs
okay now i need to submit acoustids
      • the button on picard is greyed out, why is that?
      • SothoTalKer
        did you use "scan"?
      • treeshateorcs
        yep
      • nothing happened
      • SothoTalKer
did you assign the files to a release?
      • treeshateorcs
i don't think so, they are just a folder on my computer. i added the folder into picard
      • they are in the left column
      • SothoTalKer
when the files are in the middle pane, use scan on them
      • treeshateorcs
        i did, nothing changed
      • SothoTalKer
then just load the release manually in picard and drag and drop the files onto the right pane
      • idealy just drop them onto the album, they should get matched to the right track automatically
      • treeshateorcs
oh i did a lookup and it worked this time
      • SothoTalKer
because those are 2 different things :)
      • lookup does what the name says, based on the already present metadata and filename it does a lookup
      • that usually gives good matches
      • treeshateorcs
hm, i can't scan in the right column
      • but i submitted acoustids for one of the albums
      • managed to
      • i think
      • SothoTalKer
scan computes the fingerprint and uses that for identifying the files. if there is no acoustid linked to the recording, it won't find a thing
      • just drag the files on the middle pane again to scan them :P
      • treeshateorcs
      • SothoTalKer
turn on the file browser with ctrl+B ;-)
      • treeshateorcs
ok so i scanned them while in the middle pane
      • do i drag them to the right pane?
      • SothoTalKer
        yes
      • if you scanned them, just drag the files onto the right
      • they should match to the right tracks
      • treeshateorcs
yay! finally done, thank you so much for the help
      • SothoTalKer
        yw
      • i think this part of picard still needs some improvements :))
      • treeshateorcs
        yeah, i think so too
      • but it's great. it helped me greatly after i downloaded my collection from google play music. it was just a bunch of mp3s piled in one folder
      • SothoTalKer
        no good filenames?
      • treeshateorcs
        01 - song's name.mp3
      • in that format
      • btw google play music lets you store up to 50k mp3 files for free. so it's a great way to backup your collection
      • SothoTalKer
        i don't have a collection :<
      • what about flac, though? :>

i don't think lossless is something i should spend my space on
      • how do i make all my edits votable?
      • is there a setting? let me check
      • iconoclasthero
tree: i thought that too and then i realized how little space flac actually ends up taking and how much of a difference it can make.
      • not necesarily always in sound quality but if you have some tracks in surround.
      • i convert them to .opus to put on my phone.
      • and yes, there's a setting to make all edits votable at the end before you click submit right by the note
      • SothoTalKer
        there's a checkbox at the end :P
      • i never use it
      • treeshateorcs
i mean, i want that by default
      • so that it's always checked
      • can you actually make a transcode of a flac file?
      • if no, that may be a pretty valid reason for me to switch to flac
      • SothoTalKer
        transcode into what?
      • treeshateorcs
        into less bitrate or something
      • like some bad people do with mp3
      • iconoclasthero
        on the fly?
      • yes.
      • statically, absolutely.
      • or are you asking if you can take flac and make it smaller than flac by reducing the bit rate?
      • and then the answer is usually not if it is already at CD quality.
      • if you have a 24-96 file you could go down to 16-44.
      • SothoTalKer
        wavpack is an option ;)
      • iconoclasthero
so is ape but i'm not suggesting that either.
      • SothoTalKer
        with its hybrid mode
      • iconoclasthero
the jvc marine unit i have in my jeep reads flacs.
      • but opus is the way i'm going with compressed music because of how ubiquitious it is outside of ios
      • treeshateorcs
i right clicked an album cover in picard and it crashed :\
      • SothoTalKer
The hybrid mode provides all the advantages of lossless compression with an additional bonus. Instead of creating a single file, this mode creates both a relatively small, high-quality lossy file that can be used all by itself, and a "correction" file that (when combined with the lossy file) provides full lossless restoration.
      • iconoclasthero
right now my mpd server is taking the flacs that i have and transcoding them into .mp3 and .opus to stream....alexa uses the .mp3 and andriod uses the opus (as .ogg)
      • yeah, but it never caught on.
      • theoretically vorbis is also much better as a lossy format than mp3 but i never converted stuff to it.
      • i can get decent sound out of audio books at 17 kb/s.
      • SothoTalKer
with the aotuv version you can even have music at 64kb almost without any perceptible quality loss
      • useful when you are outside with crappy headphones anyway XD
      • treeshateorcs
can't seem to find where to edit genres
      • iconoclasthero
yeah. it looks like the transparancy point of opus is around 64-96kb
