ianweller_: in some cases, digital has a bonus track.
hawke_1
Plus, if I rip the CD I may end up with very very similar files
kepstin-work
you could think of the downloadable version as a pre-ripped copy of the cd.
derwin
err, hawke_1
ianweller_
derwin: you must like making my irc client beep
:)
hawke_1: anyway, how i've always done it is have two releases in the same release group with basically the same exact info, except one is a CD and the other is digital media.
it comes with these benefits:
- for the CD, you can do the physical scan of the cover art, and for the digital release you can just upload what came with it.
kepstin-work
ianweller_: only do that if the digital media version is available on its own, of course.
ianweller_
kepstin-work: yes.
hawke_1
Which it is.
ianweller_
- you can add the disc ID to the CD release and the digital media can be left aloe.
alone*
kepstin-work
hmm, I guess then you think of the online store as offering a two-for-one deal where you get both the cd and the digital release together in a bundle?
ianweller_
yeah
kepstin-work
i.e. the same thing as if a store shrinkwrapped a vinyl and a cd together and stuck a single pricetag on them?
hawke_1
The digital release even comes with art for what would be the disc itself (and presumably will be on the physical CD)
ianweller_
yeah, that happens a lot too.
hawke_1
Does that count as “medium”?
ianweller_
hard to say. i'd have to look at the page again
hawke_1
Well, in your opinion. :-)
kepstin-work
hawke_1: I wouldn't say that's a medium. I suppose the idea is that you could burn the digital release to cd and print out a label for it?
ianweller_
i'd call it "other"
kepstin-work
hawke_1: I'd just mark it other, yeah
ianweller_
the only time i would upload a "medium" art for a digital release is if i got it on a USB drive or something
and i (attempted to) scan the artwork on the side of it or whatnot
hawke_1
I have no idea what the idea is. if I had to guess I would say that it’s just for the sake of completeness.
kepstin-work
you could turn the bytes of the zip file download into a bitmap image and call that the medium picture.
hawke_1
i.e. the artist had the artwork handy, why deprive people who bought the digital release?
kepstin-work
jpg compression would corrupt it, tho ;)
ianweller_
kepstin-work: well, but if you converted the bits to an image, you would be distributing the music, not just the artwork
kepstin-work
if you take a high-enough resolution image of a vinyl, you'd be distributing the music :)
so I guess downscale it.
ianweller_
i can't wait until artists distribute their music as input files for 3-D printers.

ianweller_: You’d be waiting a long time.
kepstin-work
ianweller_: technically, you can convert pcm audio into instructions for carving a vinyl disc such that it could be played back in a record player to reproduce the music.
so, yeah.
roosoft
what's the simplest way to get a release ASIN directly from the database?
they're designed to give you an overview, not a complete picture
kepstin-work
oh well
ianmcorvidae
if you want a complete picture, look at admin/sql/CreateTables.sql :)

I wonder whether back+spine makes sense for a digital release, too.
I mean, it’s obviously artwork designed for a CD…but again, digital release → doesn’t have spine any more than it has a medium
kepstin-work
well, 'back' probably still makes sense
dunno about spine :)
hawke_1
exactly.
I meant specifically the common “back+spine” that you get scanning the entire back sheet for a CD, or artwork intended for printing the same.

Anoia
is it better to use acoustid or amplifind?
kepstin-work
Anoia: given that amplifind is slow, unreliable, and is difficult to add new fingerprints to, we generally recommend acoustid :)
