Funny that my google translated text from Danish is clearer than your original Englis text :p
hawke_2
given that he remained through the present
reosarevok
*English even
(admittedly that's not the case for all the text)
heh
Composers in residence next? :p
(grr, I really want to be able to add instruments to orchestra players now :( )
kepstin-work
maybe we should just go all-out and support custom text attributes on ARs :)
hawke_2
reosarevok: if I do both 'principal' and 'guest', that makes it 'principal guest conductor', right?
reosarevok
Yes
(and guest is allowed with others, unlike the rest)
kepstin-work: I would want this to be db-data though
As in, not free text
hawke_2
semi-free (i.e. free with suggestions?)
hmm…is there any reason we couldn’t do a combination?
so you could choose the type from a predefined list and type in text that would change how it was displayed?
kepstin-work notes that free-text stuff makes it untranslatable, as well
similar to artist credits
kepstin-work
not that our current AR system is that friendly to translation right now...
reosarevok
Why?
For most languages, it's not specially bad
(it will feel forced in some, but it's not terrible)
kepstin-work
hmm, I suppose the strings do let you alter the locations of where things are subbed in, eh.
reosarevok
You mean where to put attributes etc? Then yes
Now, instruments are going to be a pain
reosarevok realises in many languages, "played X" is in a different case from just "X"
reosarevok hopes ianmcorvidae and nikki have thought of this kind of stuff :)
ianmcorvidae
heh
well
if nothing else, I can pester you to enter tickets ;)
reosarevok
Is it even possible to do that with our current system though?
kepstin-work
I still want the multiple-attribute ARs (e.g. instruments, vocals) split into multiple ARs
reosarevok
heh
kepstin-work
to make the entire UI more consistent.
ianmcorvidae
yes, agreed
reosarevok
Not always!
kepstin-work accidentally made someone perform "lead vocals", "background vocals", and "lead and background vocals" a couple days ago.
(if we add them to members, it'd be a pain to have "member, vocals", "member, guitar" and "member, keyboards" :p
)
hawke_2
+1 kepstin-work
kepstin-work
alternately, some way of magically merging them in the database would work just as well
but that would be annoying, because adding a new instrument performance, for example, wouldn't show up immediately.
hawke_2
kepstin-work: it could…
kepstin-work: Its appearance would just change after awhile
i.e. show it as it is now, and then have an automatic process merge them daily or however often

kepstin-work
well, the internal implementation doesn't matter, as long as all of them can be edited separately and displayed merged.
(i.e. removing an attribute from an AR should generate a 'remove artist played instrument on recording' edit)
that gets a bit more tricky, because right now we can support a single recording having both "performed vocals on" and "performed background vocals on" - which /can't/ be merged without information loss.
it could be displayed as "performed vocals and background vocals" tho, I guess?
adhawkins joined the channel
hawke_2
Isn’t that redundant?
If you performed background vocals, you performed vocals
kepstin-work
not really.
Guest60065 joined the channel
could mean "performed background vocals and some other vocal type not currently in musicbrainz"
hawke_2
Let me know how someone can perform background vocals without performing vocals. ;-)
reosarevok
kepstin-work: that'd be "other" though :p
(although admittedly, I'm not going to use "other" for all rapping)
brianfreud
Ok, here's a fun one for you... A release consisting of the music to a podcast. (bumpers, etc) Is that a podcast soundtrack, or just an album?
kepstin-work
brianfreud: I'd say soundtrack.
hawke_2
brianfreud: Soundtrack album.
brianfreud
me too, it just feels wierd somehow to even consider a podcast having a soundtrack :P
kepstin-work
hawke_2: we don't have that yet ;)
jmv_ joined the channel
hawke_2
kepstin-work: Soon though, I think?
Anyway, it’s clearly soundtrack.
kepstin-work
hawke_2: one more week
kepstin-work has a lot of soundtrack singles to reclassify :)
reosarevok
brianfreud: I've seen soundtracks to books...
hawke_2
I have a soundtrack to a boardgame. :-)
kepstin-work
hmm. does our 'soundtrack' category also include the sort of 'music inspired by' releases?
hawke_2
All conductors have been added to the Boston Pops Orchestra, with suboptimal credits both tagged and in the annotations.
brianfreud
I've always said no to that one kepstin-work when I've entered them
reosarevok
kepstin-work: who knows
I'd say no
But it's ill-defined, as all others
hawke_2
kepstin-work: I would say yes, at least if it's “from and inspired by”
billy_ran_away: I know. Just pointing it out. Either interpretation is probably fine./
billy_ran_away
hawke_2: Oh okay cool
hawke_2: Yea, I like the other way better, Futurecop!: The Movie OST
hawke_2: But I felt like it should just match iTunes and Amazon
Consider that a lot of people use those two sources for tagging, so if they switch to or from MB it'd make it easier to keep it consistent...
hawke_2
billy_ran_away: usually “Artist Intent” trumps everything, so if you find evidence that the artist intended it that way, it’s more important. Anyway, release looks just fine
billy_ran_away
That was my thought anyway
hawke_2: Fair enough
hawke_2: Thanks for input guys
Err that last message was meant for everyone : )

Mineo
reosarevok: is the description for the guest attribute of the conductor relationship the same as for guest everywhere else? it's looking odd, talking about "the band", not "the orchestra"
reosarevok
Mineo: it is
And I know
But it can't be personalised for each rel, and I wanted to add a phrase for orchestras but nikki told me there's a crash there and it won't let me
reosarevok tries anyway
In case it's been fixed
