that gets a bit more tricky, because right now we can support a single recording having both "performed vocals on" and "performed background vocals on" - which /can't/ be merged without information loss.

Consider that a lot of people use those two sources for tagging, so if they switch to or from MB it'd make it easier to keep it consistent...

billy_ran_away: usually “Artist Intent” trumps everything, so if you find evidence that the artist intended it that way, it’s more important. Anyway, release looks just fine
