      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah, probably
      • we need everything to have ACs, probably
      • to really model all of this
      • reosarevok
Doesn't change the fact that two different projects by one artist in different styles shouldn't be all mixed up
      • ianmcorvidae
if we can keep track of crediting, they can not be "mixed up" due to that :P
      • reosarevok
They will all be in a same page, so yes, they will be displayed mixed-uppily
      • SultS
It would be probably doable to have one artist for all and still display the performance name on pages where needed/spesific credits are… it would require lot of changes though
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah, indeed
      • reosarevok
I would like to have two artists for that, but use them more cleverly
      • ianmcorvidae
I'm not saying this'll happen *quickly* or anything
      • reosarevok
Say, mark what stuff is legal-name-only somehow and not show it when searching for ACs, or whatever. Dunno
      • SultS
reosarevok, you could also have then 1 artist, but have perhaps dynamic pages for each artist credit
      • ianmcorvidae
I mean, I think we should have one entity per artist; pages we can do whatever
      • SultS
so it looks like every performance name has separate page
      • reosarevok
Or have a main entity, with some kind of "sub-entities"
      • ianmcorvidae
reosarevok: yeah, that's what I was talking about approximating with having ACs for everything
      • reosarevok
(so, they all have MBIDs and stuff, but all are joined as "guy X")
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah
      • adding MBIDs is a good idea
      • SultS
        pretty much this
      • reosarevok
Anyway, the first thing of all should be inheriting and propagating info
      • (which we could do now already)
      • ianmcorvidae
or merging, and splitting it for display :P
      • reosarevok
If I add a birth date to an artist, it should ask me if I want to apply it to the rest of his performance names etc
      • SultS
well, there should really be only one birth date
      • reosarevok
        Yeah
      • I guess I was more thinking about country
      • SultS
performance names could have start datest then
      • ianmcorvidae
really, what I want to avoid is things like our current pseudorelease clusterfuck
      • since those should really be alternate tracklists, not separate releases
      • of course, to improve either of these situations we need dev work
      • reosarevok
With country I could see people arguing that a specific performance name is used for a project in a specific country or whatever
      • Dunno
      • ianmcorvidae
        needs better location support :P
      • reosarevok
        Not really
      • JoeLlama joined the channel
      • ianmcorvidae
        to really convey that? yes
      • SultS
I don’t think most performance names would even need a country
      • reosarevok
Oh, I don't care about really conveying that
      • I am just wondering if we can auto-inherit the country or not
      • (and trying to see what people might argue against it)
      • ianmcorvidae
I think you could have quasi-inheritance
      • reosarevok
Since the main argument I've seen for merging legal + performance has been "it gets out of sync"
      • SultS
I guess if the person lived in one place and used a performance name there, then moved and left that name behind, it would be useful
      • suriv joined the channel
      • ianmcorvidae
i.e. display on the page/return in the WS the 'inherited' one, but allow setting another for things like country-specific performance names
      • SultS: yeah, I think of the chinese members of one of the jpop groups I listen to -- they went by japaneseifications of their chinese names while in the group
      • admittedly they haven't released anything, as far as I know, under their chinese names
      • nikki
ianmcorvidae: if we had to pick between using legal names as the main artist entry or having separate entries for legal names, even I would go for the latter :P
      • ianmcorvidae
but the japaneseified names should probably be country:JP, while the people are definitely country:CN
      • reosarevok
        ianmcorvidae: are they?
      • with the current definition of artist country, if their career was in JP...
      • nikki
ianmcorvidae: assuming you're thinking of mm, then they do have some stuff credited to them in collaborations
      • ianmcorvidae
reosarevok: I mean if they released things under their chinese names later
      • nikki
but artist credits work fine for that
      • ianmcorvidae
i.e. if they essentially had two musical careers, one in JP and one in everywhere else :P
      • nikki
and artist credits for relationships would work fine for the member relationships imo
      • ianmcorvidae
nikki: okay, so, what is the legal name alias type for MBS-3788 even for then?
      • reosarevok
SultS: for performance name dates, btw, those can/should be added in the "performs as" relationship
      • ianmcorvidae
which is to say, when is it that we don't add a separate legal name artist? I don't see any cases where that's the case right now
      • (speaking of which, might go add legal name artists for the members of Perfume :P)
      • nikki
ianmcorvidae: the most obvious cases would be when people use a variation of the real name as their main name (e.g. leaving out their middle name, using a shortened version of their first name)
      • SultS
reosarevok, yeah, I do that, but it does look bad on performance name page. “Legal name: (period)”. That wasn’t the point though, point was we could get rid of the duplication…
      • reosarevok
        Yeah
      • ianmcorvidae
        hm, okay
      • nikki
and beyond that would need discussion about where to draw the line :P
      • reosarevok
ianmcorvidae: there are a lot of Spanish artists who use their Name Surname1, but legally they're Name Surname1 Surname2
      • ianmcorvidae
nikki: you know the members of Perfume; I entered them as a~chan, nocchi, kashiyuka -- would those be cases where you'd just use the legal name alias type, then?
      • reosarevok
I do agree it's a bit of overkill to have a separate artist for that
      • ianmcorvidae
(since those are derivations of their legal names)
      • (also things like junjun/linlin, which right now don't have legal-name artists IIRC)
      • nikki
        they do ;_;
      • oh, I thought I entered them, but turns out I didn't. phew :P
      • ianmcorvidae
heh, searching for junjun gives me nothing useful
      • nikki
I'm not sure about the perfume example
      • ianmcorvidae
ah, the sortname has a space in it
      • me adds 'JunJun' as an alias so it actually appears in the stupid search :P
      • nikki
(I mean, obviously *I* wouldn't complain if you did only have one artist with the legal name as an artist, but whether that's how it should be, dunno...)
      • er
      • as an alias

there we go. Only one thing left to do: find the person who added the "fixme everything" tag to http://musicbrainz.org/release/2054cb1e-0d22-4a... and get them to remove it :)
