any autoeditors here who want to approve medium edits? (since they essentially auto-fail in 3 weeks)

Hello guys, how have you been using MusicBrainz with iTunes? I just ran into a lot of possibilities, no solutions at all....
      • bitmap
what kind of solutions are you looking for?

bitmap, specifically for updating the library with new tags
      • the old "get info" trick is not working quite well
      • bitmap
guhcampos: the last person working on itunes integration was falcotron, but he's been inactive for months...if you're using OSX, you might try the code at http://code.google.com/p/picardplugins/wiki/ITu...), otherwise I wouldn't expect anything to work
      • guhcampos
bitmap, I've seem the comment on his work, but unfortunatelly (for me) I'm on windows =|
      • bitmap
        ah
      • guhcampos
So the deal is: nobody is using itunes so
      • bitmap
I use itunes for my ipod, but I update the library so infrequently that I don't mind doing it manually
      • guhcampos
I see... I get new stuff (and delete things I dislike) quite often, and my library is huge =|
      • I wouldn't care to use another player, really, but since I got an iPhone I haven o option, because of the apps
      • bitmap
since itunes is proprietary it's difficult to develop support for it (especially cross-platform), and pretty much no one is interested in working on it right now

        I hate the evil empire
      • guhcampos
yeah, and guys at apple don't make it any easier
      • =|
      • I was thinking about some python stuff I could arrange, but I don't really know from where to start
      • bitmap
I don't know anything about development on windows...a comment in http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/3976 says it's possible using the itunes COM sdk
      • guhcampos
I've read it, but I'm clueless on Windows Dev too
      • I was thinking of something a bit bolder: messing with the .xml of Itunes library
      • I used a hack with it once
      • deleted the entire library and then just imported the XML again
      • so maybe I could scan the files and then write the tags to the Library XML instead of directly to iTunes
      • bitmap
        it's worth a try, I guess

bitmap: why is the sign ":" in %album% replace to the sign "_" for writing to disk?
      • bitmap
        HeinzBoettjer: windows/mac don't allow ":" in filenames
      • HeinzBoettjer
Is it not the better decision to make the used system or filesystem than on the minimum standard?
      • (sorry maybe bad english)
      • hawke_
HeinzBoettjer: the option is "replace non-windows-compatible characters" I believe
      • bitmap
        yep, I'd try disabling that
      • CatCat
I wish it would just omit the symbol altogether
      • bitmap
on osx I just replace it with some unicode colon (though I don't remember which specific one)
      • HeinzBoettjer
Thanks, this option I didn't realize. Checked as default is a good decision (and new glasses for me to) :-|

hey can anyone see this "check all votes thing“ in http://musicbrainz.org/work/0df5668e-8f2f-3d2b-... ??? or is it just me ? IUt’s bugged because it only appear sometimes when we don’t need it (just one edit to vote for instance)
      • Like I said the other day but I couldn’t find example back http://chatlogs.musicbrainz.org/musicbrainz/201...
      • now that I have this bug back in front of me I tested and can say that it is not a bug or leftover from my "check all votes" userjs http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/57765
      • (which only appears when needed)
      • sorry CatCat , I can’t see youtube here

      • nikki
        I always see it
      • jesus2099
Well I almost never see it, just only when it shouldn’t be there :)
      • so I filed a bug because it might not include some features I’ve experienced in my 2 years of “check all votes” updates http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-2944
      • hrglgrmpf
jesus2099: I don't see it on this page either, but on most other pages...
      • jesus2099
        So there is a serious bug :) if(jesus2099){radomize();}
      • hrglgrmpf
Maybe it is related to unicode characters?
      • jesus2099
        ?
      • hrglgrmpf
I don't have edits with Japanese language in my edit queue that often...
      • jesus2099
      • hrglgrmpf
Yes, in your edit queue it is visible for me...
      • So probably has nothing to do with characters...
      • jesus2099
maybe it has to do with jesus2099 then…
      • hrglgrmpf
      • jesus2099
I never see it, reosvork neither sees it
      • I don’t see it in your new link either
      • nikki’s edits
      • and it’s not because of my userjs as I tried to remove it but still the same
      • hrglgrmpf
Oh, I thought you meant your userjs!
      • jesus2099
Ah you mean you can see my userjs !
      • ?
      • hrglgrmpf
Yes, in the edit queues of nikki and you, but not in the edit queue of the work
      • jesus2099
I can too of course ! :D I meant there is a (new?) “vote on all edits” similar to my userjs that appears randomly
      • in the work edit queue it is normal that my userjs doesn’t show up as there is only one votable edit
      • nikki: what is it that you are always seeing then ?
      • hrglgrmpf
Ah, but in the work edit queue I can see "Vote on all edits:" :-)
      • jesus2099
hrglgrmpf: like me then, same bug
      • nikki
I see it on your open edits, but not on my own (for obvious reasons I hope)
      • jesus2099
        nikki: bof
      • strange, so it’s not a mirage, but maybe it’s a mirage only for non automods
      • nikki
and it's not new, it was there in mason too. I imagine the logic for it is broken in some way
      • jesus2099
for non automods, it is not supposed to appear but it appears in some random places
      • And now something completely different : is it OK if I link a release to a completely wrong ASIN (except it is matching the bar code) ? ← it’s wrong cover, wrong format etc.
      • creature joined the channel
      • nikki wouldn't
      • hrglgrmpf
hmm, just a short question: I got the impression that with NGS we copy the track list a bit more exactly than with pre-NGS (e.g. don't enter " / hidden track" in track list, but in the recording name)
      • jesus2099
I wouldn’t either so I found the correct cover pic and tried to remove the ASIN for the second time in http://musicbrainz.org/edit/14753688
      • nikki: ↗
      • hrglgrmpf
Is this correct, and if it is, should I file an RFC for a clarification of the style guide?
      • jesus2099
hrglgrmpf: no opinion, it’s not a bad idea but makes the hidden track pretty much… well, hidden, indeed :)
      • v6lur
hrglgrmpf: why'd you want to "re-hide" them?
      • hrglgrmpf
jesus2099: Yes, but this is actually a great semantical improvement :-)
      • nikki would still enter it in the tracklist title
      • This way, it is visible that the track is hidden (but the name is not lost at all, since it is in the recording)
      • jesus2099
I would too but that was still a great idea, stylisically speaking ;)
      • _bibi joined the channel
      • v6lur
we can't have everything as on cover anyway... impossible already in principle
      • (different fonts, all-caps/small-caps titles, play-of-colours, etc...)
      • hrglgrmpf
v6lur: yes, of course... but with NGS we can do it a little better
      • v6lur
but is there a point to it? :)
      • hrglgrmpf
e.g. I think "(feat. Artist)" should now not be entered in the tracklist anymore?
      • jesus2099
if we could have the hidden song still there but greyed out, wow !
      • v6lur
        i wouldn't re-introduce proven typos, for example...
      • pecastro joined the channel
      • hrglgrmpf: the tendency seems to be entering them as artist credits, yes
      • hrglgrmpf
v6lur: I've seen edits that reintroduce typos (not by my) with a prove of the cover image...
      • I thought this isn't bad since the recording has the standardized name...
      • it might be handy to identify different releases...
      • v6lur
and actually it's the same with wrong capitalization: the tracklist is the most visible part, and if stuff is wrong there, people will assume that the wrong stuff is actually correct
      • hrglgrmpf
v6lur: Well, I see the all-caps as a font style... so I would still use our capitalization for that
      • _bibi has left the channel
      • but if e.g. on a compilation they credit a band as "The Artist", but it is really just "Artist", I'm now entering it as "The Artist" (but of course linked to the right artist)
      • v6lur
yea, and i regard mid-sentence 'Of' and such as a styling issue and would rather enter it as 'of' ;)
      • nikki
hrglgrmpf: everyone has their own opinion on how much standardising should happen. pretty much everything from "enter everything as close to the cover as possible no matter how little sense it makes or how ridiculous it looks" to "continue applying style guidelines but allow tracks to have different names if the name was changed"
      • v6lur
i suppose i'm an example of the latter, then
      • nikki would personally continue fixing typos, missing accents and capitalisation, and would still leave off things she doesn't consider part of the track title
      • nikki
but there are people who think I'm going too far, and others who think I'm not :)
      • hrglgrmpf
nikki: true... what would you do with hidden tracks that don't appear on the track list at all?
      • nikki
as I said before, I'd still enter them :P
      • v6lur
        as would i
