I'm assuming the common sense thing to do for a marriage surname-change is to just apply it and annotate?
      • danbri joined the channel
      • I guess the wiki sort of implies it, thought it certainly could be more explicit considering it's not a particularly rare case
      • nikki
        probably
      • srotta
I've been thinking about the same thing.
      • I've noticed both cases where the name has been changed, and cases where there's a new artist.
      • One of the latter ones I actually noticed yesterday and wondered in the edit if it should be merged to the original name.

      • Wizzcat
well if I've understood NGS correctly artist credits will alleviate it somewhat
      • and yes, there are tons of those
      • dinog joined the channel
      • when bands completely change the name it's kind of hard to justify merging them though, since the old name will be lost
      • fatih joined the channel

It's the same with people, really. 8)
      • And of course it's somewhat rewriting the history, since the name changes for all past ARs as well.

wonder what happens if I merge artists on test.mbz
      • I'd sort of expect an option to either transfer artist credits to the new name, or retain them
      • ruaok joined the channel
      • nikki
        it keeps the credits
      • I think it needs an option though (same for editing artists), fixing typos will be so much more tedious otherwise
      • Wizzcat
yup, most merges I do are for errors

Nikki ? I need to reply to the guy that is asking if there is an example of smart catalogue number seach anywhere but I unsubscribed the ML
      • Could you post this example for VICL-60686 to him?
      • same results with or without the hyphen
      • or someone else here who is subscribed to style ML ?
      • nikki
        ok
      • jesus2099
nice! Thanks :) I should have created a forums thread from the start with a link to it in my ML post but now it's too late. I don't think I have anything else to say anyway ;p
      • fatih
those amazon links can be cleaned up a little
      • jesus2099
        cool
      • fatih
        hmv too
      • nikki
that makes them turn into links in the chat logs too \o/
      • fatih
even shorter one for amazon http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/?k=VICL-60686
      • warp also responded on the list.
      • nikki
haha "No more results. Try Google."

        duck duck go \o/
      • jesus2099
        duck duck go?
      • nikki
for some reason I can't search in the page there :/
      • it just jumps straight to the actual search field
      • oh, maybe it's hijacked my /
      • jesus2099
        nikki: what page?
      • nikki
        the duck duck go one
      • jesus2099
what is it ducj ducj go?
      • warp
you can disable keyboard shortcuts in the settings.
      • nikki
        a search engine
      • if you read the thread you started, you'd see :P
      • jesus2099
        ow
      • warp
jesus2099: you should probably stay subscribe the style mailinglist if you want to make style changes.
      • nikki
      • jesus2099
        or is it "aw" ?
      • warp: I really don't like receiving tons of e-mails I just delete them all the time even if I'm only subscribed a few minutes I receive tons
      • nikki
I think it'd be "ow", but I can't be sure what you wanted it mean :)
      • jesus2099
duck duck go, is it nice search? nikki: I don't have troubles on duckduckgo (same browser)
      • nikki
dunno, I've never used it, I was just looking at warp's examples
      • warp
jesus2099: I can understand that you don't like that. But you will have to if you want to make the change you suggested.
      • jesus2099
I can pass the flag or something like that...
      • nikki
I use google because I'm used to using google and every time I try and switch I just get confused
      • jesus2099
hehe, kuno: what's nice with the duck? at least the logo is cute
      • warp: I know it's quite absurd to create a ML entry and unsubscribe but it's the only place I was supposed to post something like that. I can't follow discussions in mailing lists, that's a technical problem in my brain, if it's not all on one page like a forum. So it wouldn't help anything if I staid subscribed anyway.
      • warp
jesus2099: much better focus on privacy, google sometimes replace links with broken redirect links which you cannot copy/paste, a support email address where someone will quickly respond to any issue you're mailing him about.
      • jesus2099
        "I'm feeling ducky" <- `\(^Δ^;)/
      • nikki
hm, google isn't smart enough to ignore leading zeros though
      • luks
perhaps we should allow unsubscribed users to post to the ML
      • most mailing lists I'm subscribed to use settings like that
      • they have to be moderated first, but still better than having other people to post instead of you
      • nikki wonders who even handles the mailing list stuff anyway
      • warp
luks: who's going to go through all the spam and find the few posts which are actually supposed to go through to the mailinglist?
      • fatih
jesus2099: here it's all in one page like a forum: http://2986109.n2.nabble.com/-td5157417.html
      • luks
warp: spam isn't a big issue in my experience
      • jesus2099
warp: I know what you mean about their links it's really annoying me now (it's new isn't it) links are google redirects, I have to use a userscript but it sometimes doesn't retrieve the real URL nicely so maybe I'll replace google by duck if you didn't see any drawaback (did you?)
      • luks
I'm admin of taglib-devel [at kde.org] and it rarely gets spam
      • nikki
I just switch domains when the redirects appear, they seem to come and go for some reason
      • luks
same for one google group I administer
      • jesus2099
fatih: thanks but I already try long times ago, it's even worse to understand anything than the plain http://lists.musicbrainz.org/pipermail/musicbra...
      • warp
jesus2099: I use duck duck go as my main search engine, but still use google often enough in areas where ddg doesn't give me good results.
      • nikki
we could always give it a try, if it doesn't work, go back to members-only
      • warp
luks: if you're volunteering, I won't object. I personally don't really see the need for it.
      • luks
I don't know if there are any spam filters
      • obviously it doesn't make sense if there isn't anything :)
      • jesus2099
hey guys don't change all this for me, sometimes I need to post so I create a temp. e-mail adress
      • But I just don't read anything there are way too many posts and it is not structured
      • nikki: with all these lines I didn't get what you were "talking" about switching domains?
      • It's a way of removing statistics redirects in google?
      • warp
jesus2099: probably using google.de or google.fr instead of google.com, and vice versa.
      • nikki
I mean like switching from google.com to google.co.uk or google.co.jp or wherever
      • there's a long enough list of domains, after all :)
      • jesus2099
Before I use the userctip to remove redirects I didn't see that changing domains would remove them!!
      • If duckduck is cool and doesn't try such funny stuff it's even better because having to run after google by regularly update a userscript is tiring...
      • I added duck as "d %mysearch%" in opera, I'll see by myself ;)
      • Thanks fatih for the shortened url in hmv and amazon, I can change my "amaj" and "hmv" opera searches too now ;)
      • I hate advertisemtn but often write some, that's ...
      • MightyJay joined the channel
      • nikki
hehe... I like seeing what keywords people use for their searches
      • jesus2099
        What are yours, nikki ^^
      • ?
      • nikki
well I have a huge list but I use "ajp" for amazon.co.jp (and auk for .co.uk and ade for .de)
      • jesus2099
        I have a great "jan" search too: g "jan *" %s ;)
      • simple search often gives nice stuff, detailed release info
      • warp: does duck understands "advanced" searches with -exclusions +must "the phrases" inurl:stuff etc. ?
      • -"excluded phrases" etc.
      • nikki
and wikipedia ones are the language code follows by w (enw, jaw, dew...), musicbrainz ones are mb followed by the letters I use when writing sql queries (mba for artists, mbb for releases, mbn for annotations...) although mbw is the wiki
      • and dictionaries are based on the language code, of course :P
      • oh, and yja for searching the yahoo auctions :D
      • ruaok joined the channel
      • jesus2099
it's yaj for the same for me ;)
      • it's funny indeed to see that kind of personal choices in such geeky stuff
      • for wikipedia it's wja, wfr, wvi, wen etc. ;)
      • translation tools: ej je fe ef .. (by first letter of language)
      • Hey I do have exaclty same as yours for mb! ;-) (plus mbu, your URL searhc tool)
      • mbr for release (why mbb?)
      • nikki
because the table in the database is "album" ("release" is the release events table)
      • so I use b for the album table, r for the release table and l for the language table :)
      • jesus2099
oh, because you know the db, even more geek
      • nikki
        hehe
      • Wizzcat
and here I was thinking I was clever with my ma and mr ;)
      • jesus2099
Do you know the textparser.php and the artisttracks.php by Muz? It's now offline and maybe I'd like to put it on my php website, but it needs a db and I don't know if I can put the MB db in mysql? Can I ?
      • wizzcat: hey, I am taking yours, they roxorz indeed!
      • nikki
I think people have managed to import the database with mysql, but I doubt you can keep it up to date
      • what did those do anyway?
      • jesus2099
        they roxorzed
      • (it's a new word I discovered)
      • Wizzcat
        actually I think it's spelled rox0rz ;)
      • nikki
well I was wondering if I have one that's similar (or if it would interest me enough to make my own :P)
      • jesus2099
artisttracks would display all tracks by that artist MBID and parsertext would display a release in a text form (copy paste -able in track parser etc.) I would use them with my http://userscripts.org/users/31010/scripts mbid script
      • How can I load MB DB in mysql then ? :) I can load it regularly for updates maybe
      • nikki
no idea, I've never tried :P
      • Wizzcat
      • any reason why you can't use postgresql though?
      • ruaok
Wizzcat: we just had some issues using that.
