luks: what happens to release annotations in a merge?
2007-05-03 12350, 2007
luks
they will be merged :)
2007-05-03 12310, 2007
Jugdish
sweet
2007-05-03 12316, 2007
Jugdish
btw, i was just thinking...when TrackMerging gets implemented, i think that remastered track should be merged with their originals
2007-05-03 12333, 2007
luks
umm
2007-05-03 12336, 2007
luks
I think they shouldn'
2007-05-03 12337, 2007
luks
t
2007-05-03 12306, 2007
luks
remasters will most likely have different PUIDs, no?
2007-05-03 12346, 2007
Jugdish
well, the reason i think so is because there are already many, many tracks on mb that are technically a merge of a remaster/original. anytime there is an album that comes out in say, vinyl, and then is later remastered on a cd but both have identical tracklisting, they are represented by a single release on mb
2007-05-03 12339, 2007
luks
hmm
2007-05-03 12341, 2007
Jugdish
so it would inconsistent to try to keep remastered tracks separate from their originals
2007-05-03 12324, 2007
luks
while we are on it... there is a db limit, that one track can appear only once on an album. do you think that will need to be removed?
2007-05-03 12329, 2007
luks
and one more question, should removing of an album also remove all tracks (if they are not used on another albums)?
2007-05-03 12308, 2007
Jugdish
hmm, i can't think of an album that contains an acoustically-identical track more than once on it...but that doesn't mean there aren't any!
2007-05-03 12326, 2007
drsaunde
yeah...i've been racking my brain as well and can't think of any
2007-05-03 12341, 2007
yllona
luks: yes. as long as the tracks aren't used on other album. but there should be a figged dialog, that says "some of these tracks are included on other albums, would you l ike to review?"
2007-05-03 12347, 2007
Jugdish
and for your second question: i'm not sure, what if some of the tracks are "non-album tracks"
2007-05-03 12326, 2007
luks
the main reason why I'm asking is that tracks will basically become standalone entities in the database
2007-05-03 12332, 2007
Jugdish
yeah
2007-05-03 12336, 2007
luks
they can have annotations, ARs, etc.
2007-05-03 12341, 2007
yllona
luks: nice
2007-05-03 12352, 2007
luks
so deleting them feels wrong
2007-05-03 12302, 2007
Jugdish
yeah, that's a tricky situation
2007-05-03 12315, 2007
yllona
yes. but i make enough errors, that it would be okay
2007-05-03 12316, 2007
Jugdish
how about this...
2007-05-03 12325, 2007
Shepard` joined the channel
2007-05-03 12333, 2007
yllona
most of the music i listen to requires "manual entry"
2007-05-03 12343, 2007
Jugdish
wait a minute...
2007-05-03 12321, 2007
Jugdish
how will non-album tracks be handled then? will we be able to do away with the dummy album called "non-album tracks" and just be able to have tracks exist under an artist outside of any release?
2007-05-03 12335, 2007
luks
I think so
2007-05-03 12337, 2007
sylvinus joined the channel
2007-05-03 12300, 2007
luks
but it's more a style guideline question than a technical question
2007-05-03 12349, 2007
Jugdish
in that case, then when adding a new release, if any of the tracks on it are already listed but not bound to any release, that info should be retained so that when removing the release, those tracks -- which would technically no longer be bounder to any release -- should be retained and not deleted
2007-05-03 12314, 2007
Jugdish
but tracks that were added as new to the system when the release was add could be deleted when the release is deleted...i think
2007-05-03 12324, 2007
luks
hmm
2007-05-03 12307, 2007
luks
in this case it would help to have "non-album tracks" releases
2007-05-03 12324, 2007
Jugdish
yeah, or at least some sort of internal flag
2007-05-03 12303, 2007
Jugdish
the main thing i don't like about the "non-album tracks" releases as they currently are implemented is the fake track numbers that get assigned to each track :/
2007-05-03 12322, 2007
drsaunde
will track aliases be available as well?
2007-05-03 12333, 2007
luks
yes
2007-05-03 12346, 2007
luks
basically like discogs handles ANVs for artists
2007-05-03 12349, 2007
drsaunde
hmm...that's interesting... :-)
2007-05-03 12350, 2007
yllona has been waiting for tracking aliases :)
2007-05-03 12354, 2007
Jugdish
very nice!
2007-05-03 12357, 2007
yllona
it's essential for jazz
2007-05-03 12317, 2007
drsaunde
yeah...how many different ways can we punctuate a track
2007-05-03 12329, 2007
Jugdish
so one question will be what to call a track when referring to outside of any album...since technically each variation of a track's name is dependent on how it's listed on each album
2007-05-03 12315, 2007
yllona
Jugdish: we'll need the official title, and the known variations as listed by the publishing agencies
2007-05-03 12322, 2007
luks
I was thinking about having a comment field like we have for artists
2007-05-03 12336, 2007
yllona
ascap, for instance publishes the variations for atrackname
2007-05-03 12344, 2007
drsaunde
go with original unless the original has been proven wrong..most misspellings and variations are due to reissue or compilation labels
2007-05-03 12345, 2007
luks
because track titles itself really depend on context of the release
2007-05-03 12353, 2007
Dhraakellian has left the channel
2007-05-03 12306, 2007
drsaunde
yeah...that might cause a little bit of problems with all the "all tracks untitled" house releases
2007-05-03 12326, 2007
BrianFreud
luks, will this allow for a way to also track pre-gap tracks?
2007-05-03 12359, 2007
luks
no
2007-05-03 12321, 2007
luks
track listing problems are a big can of worms on it own :)
2007-05-03 12326, 2007
BrianFreud
lol
2007-05-03 12335, 2007
luks
pre-gap tracks, subtracks, medleys, ...
2007-05-03 12348, 2007

true enough...

2007-05-03 12346, 2007
Shepard`
Shepard` is now known as Shepard
2007-05-03 12348, 2007
Jugdish
actually, the ability for one track to be bound to more than one artist would be useful
2007-05-03 12313, 2007
Jugdish
...until we have artist name variation implemented ;)
2007-05-03 12309, 2007
luks
I'm not sure if artist name variations would be really that good idea
2007-05-03 12305, 2007
luks
they are useful at discogs, because they try to copy liner notes as much as possible
