i subscribe to editors i do NOT trust, need to keep an eye on those.
CatCat
i do both
warp
in theory i would also subscribe to editors who tend to add interesting releases, but in practice i haven't done so yet :)
CatCat
i tend to subscribe to uh.. you guys.. liek a lame "buddy" list.. isthat lame? yes
warp
no it's not
BrianFreud
yeah, I have both - ones I don't trust and ones I do - on my list. If "Subscribed" actually showed subscribed editors' edits, I'd prob just subscribe to those I don't trust.
Hmmm... Okay, Weird Al's "I Love Rocky Road" is a parody of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll". It came out not long after Joan Jett's version spent 13 weeks at #1. He was obviously parodying her version. But the original was done by The Arrows in the early 70s. So is it a parody of Joan Jett or The Arrows?
BrianFreud
If her version was different enough to be a new work (if we had works yet), I'd say a parody of her work, with her work a cover of the arrow's work.
HairMetalAddict
Hmmm... Never heard The Arrows version.
Doubt many people have. They may have done the original, but she made it the legend that it is. ;-)
Think I'll go with Jett's version ("artist intent").
Damn idiots released it as a B-side. No wonder noone knows who they are with stupid decisions like that. :-P
Bah, decisions, decisions...
yllona idly wonders if ruaok could visit the a/V department at SLO-Poly to check for "lost" tapes of Wierd Al
yllona seems to remember that weird al got his start at the SLO/Poly radio station
yllona
in the dread "archi-torture" program
BrianFreud
I thought Wierd Al was from Canada... wouldn't he have started up there?
yllona
can't remember where he's from, but he definitely went to college at SLO/poly
HairMetalAddict
During Yankovic's sophomore year as an architecture student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he became a disc jockey at the university's radio station, KCPR. Yankovic said he had been nicknamed "Weird Al" by fellow students and "took it on professionally" as his persona for the station.
^Wikipedia
yllona
HairMetalAddict: yep, that's what i remember
HairMetalAddict
He recorded My Bologna in the restroom across the hall from the station
yllona
yeah, we're about the same age, and i was a visiting student there, looking at schools.
HairMetalAddict
Bah, I'll use The Arrows since it's technically correct.
yllona
again for for the dread archi-torture program

BrianFreud Jeff Buckley - Moisture (from 1997-02-09: Arlene's Grocery, New York City, NY, USA)
BrianFreud
most obscure cover ever :)
Who covers The Residents? :p
yllona
laterz folks
drsaunde
how would you even know it was a residents cover? might actually be one of the Residents in real life...youneverknow
BrianFreud
kind of doubt it...
drsaunde
well if you know who was in the residents, enter those members in the db
we'd have a scoop
BrianFreud
not a clue, but considering they were most likely in high school in the 60's in Lousianna, Jeff Buckley was probably a bit young to have been one of them
drsaunde
yah..but they could have had rotating members in as well
buckley of course would be amongst the very least likely
BrianFreud suggests Hendix and Cobain as other Residents :P
drsaunde is just realizing how of he says stupid stuff in this chatroom
*often
CatCat would use jett's version of rock n roll personally :s
actually found something on this - looks like it was some 100 tape release. (caution, the site he links to is NSFW, and I don't see it there anyhow) http://robocybersquaw.livejournal.com/97034.html
HairMetalAddict
*sigh* Really thinking artist intent should be deciding factor in parody/cover. Who's version the artist was attempting to parody/cover should take precedent over "the original artist".
Becomes a big factor on Weird Al's "Even Worse" album. 4 parodies are of songs that were popular at the time of release but each was itself a cover song.
"I Think I'm a Clone Now" = Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now", not the Tommy James 60s version.
Alimony is Billy Idol's Mony, Mony, not the 60s Tommy James version.
And so on.
CatCat is falling in love with Grieg all over again http://youtube.com/watch?v=lLDTzspI9CI&feature=related
