I did all mine as flacs, then I found out that if I use max in osx, I can get the isrcs in the tags ;_;
2008-05-15 13630, 2008
gioele
than then you encode from that: to hi quality MP3, low bitrate MP3, Vorbis, whatever
2008-05-15 13658, 2008
nikki
and it's faster to rerip them than to copy them by hand >_<
2008-05-15 13659, 2008
MClemo
and if a new nice lossy encoder comes out, you can use that
2008-05-15 13628, 2008
xlotlu
i intend to keep all music rsynced between laptop and server
2008-05-15 13629, 2008
xlotlu
and fast converting to lossy when in a hurry to leave home.. not really fun :)
2008-05-15 13625, 2008
nikki
I just put a few albums on my mp3 player and never change them
2008-05-15 13644, 2008
petros
Then keep an extra repository of lossy at around 160 kbs. Shouldn' take up too much space
2008-05-15 13656, 2008
nikki
I really want a proper one which has its own rechargeable battery, this one eats through my AAA batteries
2008-05-15 13603, 2008
nikki
but it was only £7.50...
2008-05-15 13615, 2008
petros
Get what you pay for sometimes :)
2008-05-15 13634, 2008
nikki
yeah, but I can't find a better one that does what I want
2008-05-15 13603, 2008
petros
Oh. Ogg support?
2008-05-15 13609, 2008
xlotlu
get 8 rechargeable AAAs and cycle them
2008-05-15 13611, 2008
MClemo
xlotlu: you rip the CDs anyway. Not much extra time to transcode them one more time after you have done that
2008-05-15 13619, 2008
nikki
unicode and flacs
2008-05-15 13638, 2008
petros
Eww, flac on portables. No wonder it burns batteries
2008-05-15 13650, 2008
nikki
xlotlu: I do, but the rechargeable ones don't last as long
2008-05-15 13653, 2008
nikki
petros: no, mp3s
2008-05-15 13600, 2008
nikki
and no tags ¬_¬
2008-05-15 13605, 2008
nikki
not that it can read them anyway
2008-05-15 13616, 2008
xlotlu
nikki: but they're environment friendly :P
2008-05-15 13629, 2008
xlotlu
MClemo: actually the encoding takes *way* longer than the ripping :)
2008-05-15 13629, 2008
nikki
and I stood on my last mp3 player and broke the screen, so I'm used to not being able to read the tags
2008-05-15 13635, 2008
nikki
xlotlu: that's why I use them :)
2008-05-15 13626, 2008
MClemo
xlotlu: true. But I don't sit next to it and wait for it to finish
2008-05-15 13628, 2008
xlotlu
anywyay. flac is overrated
2008-05-15 13625, 2008
petros
heretic.
2008-05-15 13627, 2008
MClemo
I like the idea to really have "CD quality"
2008-05-15 13627, 2008
nikki
petros: well, I can convert things to ogg or mp3 or something, but if I'm going to pay good money for one, I want one which will be able to handle me putting some flacs on it a couple of minutes before I leave the house :P
2008-05-15 13650, 2008
xlotlu
when i'll be able to tell the difference between a cd and lame --preset extreme i'll switch to flac
2008-05-15 13625, 2008
nikki
it never stopped me :P
2008-05-15 13628, 2008
aCiD2
xlotlu: if you ripped to flac you don't re-rip as you're now considering doing
2008-05-15 13630, 2008
MClemo
you don't. But you can go as low as -V 5 with lame and don't have to worry that it might be messed up. If it is you can transcode again
2008-05-15 13633, 2008
aCiD2
that, is the benefit
2008-05-15 13609, 2008
MClemo
aCiD2: well put ;)
2008-05-15 13630, 2008
petros
nikki: Fair enough. I consider portable player suitable for lossy only, unless used as a tempoary file storage
2008-05-15 13608, 2008
nikki
well yeah, in general I would use only lossy stuff on one
2008-05-15 13611, 2008
aCiD2
When I was at home with 2 computers (one media, one for work) I'd rip a flac on my work computer, rsync to the server, and the server would transcode it to a mp3 automagically, ready for me to pop on my ipod :)
2008-05-15 13611, 2008
xlotlu
umm, aCiD2: you mean, had i ripped to flac the first half of the cds, now i would be less pissed about not encoding to vorbis :/ :)
2008-05-15 13629, 2008
aCiD2
xlotlu: hm? I mean you'd just grab the flacs and convert them all to oggs
2008-05-15 13635, 2008
aCiD2
rather than having to change cds and all that jazz
2008-05-15 13646, 2008
petros
xlotlu: Exactly
2008-05-15 13613, 2008
luks
but changing cds is fun!
2008-05-15 13619, 2008
xlotlu
aCiD2: the wishful thinking flacs are now mp3s with --preset extreme :) (half of them at least)
2008-05-15 13629, 2008
petros
You just have some handy flac2(ipod|m4a|ogg|mp3) scripts handy
2008-05-15 13642, 2008
aCiD2
Right, but you go from that to ogg and you're no longer at ogg "extreme"
2008-05-15 13656, 2008
xlotlu
i want a transparent filesystem
2008-05-15 13617, 2008
nikki gives xlotlu a hard drive made of clear plastic
2008-05-15 13601, 2008
xlotlu
store the flacs in /flacs, and copy back from /ogg where it shows the dir structure mirrored, but only encodes on the fly by request
2008-05-15 13603, 2008
petros wonders if luks is slightly krazy
2008-05-15 13607, 2008
xlotlu
and a pony
2008-05-15 13615, 2008
nikki
petros: I think we all are
2008-05-15 13643, 2008
MClemo
some are more crazy than others though!
2008-05-15 13644, 2008
aCiD2
I like the fuse lame filesystem thing
2008-05-15 13658, 2008
aCiD2
where you can mount flacs as mp3s and it transcodes to mp3s on the fly
2008-05-15 13600, 2008
petros
changig cd is *fun*? That's like saying making love in an iron maiden is enjoyable
2008-05-15 13600, 2008
aCiD2
thought that was cool :P
2008-05-15 13607, 2008
xlotlu
aCiD2: wanna start working on it?
2008-05-15 13616, 2008
aCiD2
it's already done
2008-05-15 13619, 2008
aCiD2
I just dunno where
2008-05-15 13624, 2008
xlotlu
heh
2008-05-15 13628, 2008
MClemo
but it can just do cbr afaik
2008-05-15 13641, 2008
MClemo
I like my transcoding scripts better
2008-05-15 13644, 2008
nikki
I like the clunk the macbook makes when it swallows the CD :o
2008-05-15 13657, 2008
aCiD2
oh sure, I like more control too, but I thought it was a neat idea :)
