<Munger> Anyone know how CBS & Columbia are related? <-- "CBS" == "Columbia Broadcasting System"; they started as different branches from the same parent company

<warp> oh wow. so Columbia is the oldest label? <-- sorta. It's the oldest that's viable, but not the oldest still existant. (See North American Phonograph Company for that one.)

I can't imaging this is a unique question but here goes. Has MusicBrainz looked at supporting Album Art? Amazon and IMDB have teamed up to create www.soundunwound.com. Let's people add info pretty easily. Pretty neat but I'd personally feel better giving my efforts to MusicBrainz.
navap
Does SoundUnwound support custom uploading of album art?
_MMA_
navap: Yes
aCiD2
_MMA_: The big problem with artwork is mostly legal
And that's why MusicBrainz has essentially no artwork (other than a few cases where we have explicit permission)
_MMA_
aCiD2: Sure, but I figured with this new site, there's some fair-use catch.
I know Wikimedia only wants under 500px images.
navap
IMDb also supports custom uploading doesn't it? They're a for-profit site I think.
_MMA_
aCiD2: When uploading art to www.soundunwound.com it explicitly says *you* (the submitter) must own the CD.
ruaok
see, I think we should be able to safe-harbour MB under such a rule, but the board keep shutting me down.
_MMA_
Images from the web aren't allowed.
ruaok
ding. :-(
_MMA_
Anyone with a Amazon account can use www.soundunwound.com now. See how it works.
I uploaded my 1000px covers. I'm pretty sure they will be resized under 600px as that's what I've been told on another forum.
ruaok
_MMA_: fyi: soundunwound is partnered with us. they use our data. :)
navap
How is their editing system? Someone, (pronik?), implied it was better than ours.
ruaok
navap: the UI is.
navap
But the backend isn't?
_MMA_
UI is pretty actually.
ruaok
the social structure won't scale as well, since they need to have amazon staff approve your changes.
_MMA_
*pretty easy
ruaok: Something I also saw and emailed them about.
ruaok
_MMA_: they know.
navap
hm, Well I'm sure they will add to the number of people who can approve as theie community gets bigger.
ruaok
but there seems to be a cultural barrier somewhere in amazon.
_MMA_
ruaok: That's what worries me and why I came here.
ruaok
thanks _MMA_. well, your work here will show up there after a while.
ruaok: there were thinking about "giving back", right?
wonder if that works properly
ruaok
pronik: yes. but they need to "finish" (read: get out of beta) before they want to start thinking about that.
_MMA_
ruaok: I'm retiring from other projects I work on so I am looking at MusicBrainz. I'd love to put my collection of music to wider use.
ruaok
:-)
_MMA_
There's also www.AlbumArtExchange.com but I think these guys /might/ get in trouble. They do mandate 600px covers (unless you need help editing then you post large version) and link to buy the albums to Amazon, so, maybe they worked something out.
ruaok
the *might* is the problem. :-(
our board shys away from any such shenanigans.
_MMA_
It's great because the community there really cares about quality but I think the efforts might be wasted if there's still legal issues surrounding this and the site one day goes down.
Munger
Search server runing slow?
_MMA_ just wants to donate his 700+ self-scanned CD cover collection. ;)
nikki
bah, where's brian when I want him
Munger
_MMA_ Better keep copyrighted stuff away from MB. If art were legally hosted elsewhere with legitimate links that tied into MBs release IDs, then there is no reason why you could not have a greasemonkey script that displayed the art on the relevant pages on MB
ruaok
Munger: search appears nominal.
Munger
Maybe I've been throttled. I just dropped 3000 tagged albums onto Picard because I changed my file naming template
navap has a dumb question, why is select data from the album art free to use, but the entire data is treated as copyrighted material?
_MMA_
Munger: Sure. I'm not doing anything with it now. Ideally, I'd like the legal issue to be worked out so it could be added to MB. /Seems/ like like under 500px or so (mine for *most* folks) is falling under fair-use. Wikimedia uses 500px covers. So, who knows.
navap
Munger: lol..
Munger
Maybe because the front cover does not have a copyright notice on it :-)
_MMA_
s/mine/fine
nikki
Munger: if they're already tagged, the search server wouldn't be involved anyway
navap
But I don't think the WS would like 3000 hits at once.
Munger
nikki, Well, whatever server is returning the up-to-date release info
nikki
hmm... 3000 seconds is 50 minutes
you've got a bit of a wait I guess :P
navap
heh
Munger
If I quit Picard and drop a single album on, it just sits there 'loading album information'
ruaok
navap: you'd get the 503 finger from the server. :)
navap
:p
ruaok
Munger: thats not search server. thats main DB server.
ok, off to the office with me. bbiab.

_MMA_ notes the "Fair use" section here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cracktheskye.jpg
pesto rice = incredibly tasty
Munger
_MMA_, My point is that I don't think MB wants to risk getting involved in an argument about fair use. If the art is stored elsewhere and not linked to by MB, then there is no legal issue. Still possible for you to distribute a script to display it as if MB were hosting it
aCiD2
_MMA_: with considered fair use too
it's just such a sketchy area
_MMA_
Oh sure. I guess it comes down to how much the community wanted the feature. Enough to consider it fair-use and fight for it? Maybe not.
xlotlu
yeah, who would want to assist making available copyrighted content? FFS...
nikki
_MMA_: it's not about how much the community wants something, they're not the people implementing it :P
_MMA_
nikki: The people here aren't the community? The people doing implementation aren't part of that community?
Seems a little sad to make that disconnect.
Munger
Who gets time to be part of a community? That involves having a life :p
nikki
maybe I didn't word it right
_MMA_
Munger: Sadly, a +1 there.
Munger
So, does the DB server excercise a quota for each IP address?
nikki
it's one request per second
Munger
I'm not getting any response from it now
_MMA_
In the end, I'm sure there's a legal way to provide art at an acceptable resolution without getting sued. Others are doing it. Hopefully one day MB can support that. In the meantime, I got reading to do. See how I might be able to help here. Later folks.
