and this artist, was "together" and I split them up... made an annotation on last fm, that it was two artists, and someone chose to change that. :( http://www.last.fm/music/Brainchild

Last fm, just can't handle multiple artists named the same thing.

Considering that this particular problem seems to be main traffic generator on their forums, I don't know why they didn't find solution for it this far.

I don't know.. but it's their problem, not ours. We give our artists a specific artist id.. they go by the alpha numerical name. That will never work in a world that has different countries for their copyrights.

Because trying to split artists based on track submissions "automagically" is a helluvalot more difficult than hand-done splitting done on MB. Any attempt to do it that's not *100% perfect* from the beginning will cause even more problems.

I agree HMA, the artist id doesn't go to the tag. If it did, then I imagine they could do it a lot easier!

Now if every single last.fm user had perfectly-tagged tracks... but even that would just make it about 50% simpler as last.fm tracks stuff that would never make it into MB as well. (Podcasts, 50 million MySpacers who think their playing with computer programs qualifies as music...)

Yeah, agreed. I was thnking, if last fm and mb wanted to work together more, they could find a way to append the artist id in like the comment field. But, people want their comment fields for various things other than a number for artist name.

and musicip already utilizes the comment field for the analysis if you request it to too.

I just wanted to know if you maybe have some thought about this mod I've mentioned.

Especially on what side effects swapping, mentioned in that discussion, would have.

My thoughts are do what's best for MB and pay no attention to last.fm. The proper edits which do the least damage to users who've tagged files with the info is best.

hmm explain to me why the DVD and CD when exeactly the same tracklist should be separate entries in the db, we don't have separate entries for lp's and CD' or MC with the same tracklist, do we? or if'we're arguing that dvd' is *special* then welll.
