Dell is the company, not the processor..
      • The processor is either AMD, or Intel, and you'll find most people here suggest AMD, though I'm not one of them.
      • Joan_W
        Intel
      • Nyght
So, it's just the box that you're having difficulties with?
      • inhouseuk
        yeah, Dell only sell Intel
      • Joan_W
        yes
      • MartinRudat
Nyght: 'tis just that each of the edit types already has a (planned at least) page for the edit, it would possibly be easier to go "Edits that require voting" rather than "Type of Votes"...
      • Nyght
Well, my true suggestion, unless the cd isn't the only difficult problem would be to look into replacing the CD (not very difficult at all) and reinstall as I had said.
      • Joan_W
I suppose in this age of planned obsolescence, the fact that it is 3 1/2 years old makes it ancient
      • Nyght
But, if it's too slow for you, if you're no longer happy with the hard drive side, the speed etc.. then ah.. then I'll do some research and see what's rating the least troublesome. :D
      • Joan_W
beth - I think I will probably go with your suggestion and let my man who repairs clean it up and replace the CD writer
      • Nyght
Okay.. I see where you're coming from.
      • Martin^^
      • sorry. ;)
      • MartinRudat
...get a DVD drive... I couldn't buy a plain CD-writer, let alone a plain CD-ROM the last time I went to look...
      • inhouseuk still has a few > 5 year old machines doing useful work
      • Nyght
I think that's your best.. because, cd writers are in the fifty dollar range. (that's from just quick guess) and the reinstall wouldn't be that bad.
      • Often times you can (especially with pent 4) do a lot to refresh and have a good system still.
      • A bit more memory might do you very nicely too.
      • What do you currently have?
      • Joan_W
martin - you are quite right - I do want a DVD drive
      • MartinRudat should put the teac cd-rom in the external case... I _did_ get it because that particular model was rated as being good at ripping...
      • MartinRudat
...if in doubt, add more ram! =)
      • Nyght
LOL Martin, you and I agree on that one!
      • MartinRudat grumps that his laptop is maxed out on ram... perhaps I shouldn't be running memory hogs like firefox on it... it's only got 640M...
      • Joan, I just constantly hear upgrade upgrade upgrade, and usually people are very good with what they have, and satisfied, but it's like brainwashing. ;) That's why I pose the questions I posed.
      • ojnkpjg
if you're looking for a cd-rom specifically for ripping, you should get a plextor
      • if you're willing to pay
      • Joan_W
        how much
      • ojnkpjg
        considerably more than other brands
      • Nyght
plextor... I heard that, got one, am not terribly impressed.. but, I am really hard on my burners too
      • Joan_W
        currently 37.2Gb
      • ojnkpjg
i just use mine for ripping
      • i have a cheapo lite-on dvd-rw for burning stuff
      • Nyght
I believe the dvd burner reader is about 70 - 80 pounds, whereas I said dollars before for the cd writer
      • ram Joan. ;)
      • ojnkpjg
what i am kind of upset about is that my plextor drive does will not read into the pregaps
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjk: this was in hmm... 98 I think. the drive was one of the few recommended models I could actually find one of. =)
      • ojnkpjg
i thought i made sure the model was getting did
      • inhouseuk
Nyght: the last dvd dual layer writer I bought a couple of months ago was £35
      • ojnkpjg
so i cannot rip track 0
      • Nyght
it's a right click, and under the properties of "my computer" and it says computer speed, then ram
      • ah, was it plextor?
      • I very well could be off inhouseuk, it's been a year or more since I bought mine.
      • inhouseuk
Nyght: nope, that was a lite-on
      • ojnkpjg
anyone know the brand and model of a drive that will read into pregaps properly?
      • i've tried about 7 different drives with no luck
      • MartinRudat
        I got a pioneer dual-layer drive... it was about $AU60 I think.
      • Nyght
      • There, take all questions out ;)
      • ojnkpjg: sorry no
      • Joan_W
I am just so amazed at how much cheaper everything is from September 2002 when I bought this set up
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjk: pioneer DVR-110D (I think) I've got seems to read the pregap just fine...
      • ojnkpjg
have you been successful ripping a track 0
      • Joan_W
beth - any sighting of tele yet
      • ojnkpjg
my drive claims to be able to read into the pregaps, but it doesn't
      • EAC and cdparanoia both just bomb out
      • they write NULLs
      • MartinRudat
Joan: not that I've bothered to check, but prices for a particular computer probably halve every 18 months.... the computer you really want always seems to stay the same price... it just gets faster. =)
      • Joan_W
        faster is good
      • Nyght
ah... that's why, didn't realize mine was dual layer http://www.plextor.com/english/products/716UF.htm (That's mine)
      • ojnkpjg
dual layer media is still so expensive
      • Nyght
Nope Joan, not even a reply back from my email yesterday
      • ojnkpjg
the drives have been around for years now, and it's still too expensive to be worth buying
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjg: I've ripped the pre-gap off Kylie Minogue's Light Years CD... only one I've seen so far in my collection, mind you...
      • ojnkpjg
well, if it worked for one, should work for all
      • thanks for the info
      • MartinRudat should stick the teac in and see what it does...
      • Nyght
<---- doesn't even know the pregap thing
      • Joan_W
inhouse got him a list of amg relationships that tele wanted to delete. We were going to do it together. I got the list from here, checked all the links, put the names of each album alongside the link to make sure it was the right one, and since telling him I had done this have heard nada
      • Nyght
        when was that?
      • :(
      • Joan_W
I don't want to start on it because I am not sure exactly what he wants to do.
      • Nyght is a little concerned..
      • inhouse sent the list through early hours of yesterday morning and I spent the morning checking albums, etc.
      • Nyght
Yeah, I'm sure of that, he does disappear for a day or two on occasion from what I saw when ... eh, perhaps about a month ago?
      • Nyght bites her tongue to not tease something
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjk: I bought three dual-layer blanks to try out the burner... I still haven't found anything that would serve as an excuse to use something that expensive for, though... =)
      • Joan_W
oh well - he will surface when he is good and ready and I did send him an email saying that I had the list.
      • ojnkpjg
yeah, i figured the prices would have come down by now
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjk: perhaps when the prices are low demand will pick up so the prices go down so demand goes up ... =)
      • Nyght
Martin, for me it's all space consideration. When you move too often the least amount of discs you have to transport and double back (work) the better!
      • inhouseuk goes for some fresh air and to get the item of shopping he forgot earlier
      • MartinRudat wonders if he can get a 2.5" firewire drive-cage...
      • MartinRudat
I think that if I really wanted to shift a lot of information around, I'd lug a drive around... =)
      • Joan_W
inhouse has just reminded me that I had better go out and get some food in if we are going to eat tonight. See you later
      • ojnkpjg
by the time dual layer gets cheap, blueray will be common
      • MartinRudat
        bye Joan, have fun.
      • Joan_W
        I hate shopping
      • Nyght
take care Joan, good to talk for a while
      • Joan_W has quit
      • MartinRudat
ojnkpjg: hmm... one wonders which blank media will have the lowst $/GB though...
      • ojnkpjg
i was looking at backup options a while ago
      • Nyght ignores her 300 meg replaceable hard drive.. that has ALL the music collections, because it's easier than lugging 1000 cds
      • hard disks are still by far the cheapest way to go
      • tape drives are ridiculously expensive
      • dvd is too much of a pain in the ass when you're dealing with >1TB
      • Nyght
tape is slow, but it can't be "bumped" and lose data like a hard drive
      • ojnkpjg
        slow and expensive
      • i could deal with it being slow
      • but i cannot afford it
      • Nyght
yeah.. so far I tend to you memory drives (for vital record information) and then removable hard drive for non vital stuff.
      • MartinRudat thinks he's managed to 'bump' one drive hard enough to cause data loss... I was in grade 6, and I thumped the desk the computer was on hard enough to make it reset...
      • Martin, I'm talking a drive in a box without any shock supports.
      • basically for all purposes, it's a raw hard drive, just with a case closing it so it doesn't shock, or ...
      • Nyght blinks about ten times, wondering what idiot move it was to place a speaker on such a drive....
      • just a second.
      • ah better.. ;) anyways.. yeah, more a case of it could be a bare hard drive more or less
      • MartinRudat
Nyght: use a laptop drive, and don't drop it further than off a desk onto a concrete floor, and afaik, you'll be perfectly fine...
      • Amblienne has quit
      • orogor joined the channel
      • MartinRudat is reasonably certain that most modern drives are relatively immune to shock once the heads are parked...
      • Nyght
        Laptop hard drives are.. geh!
      • MartinRudat
they're harder to break than desktop once by dropping them, afaik.
      • Nyght
but, yes, it's more durable (the 10 gig I have) than my 300 desktop hard drive in the same style structure
      • They're just expensive!
      • MartinRudat
        there is that. =)

      • Jetpack strokes his 4 raptors
      • Shepard has quit
      • Shepard`
Shepard` is now known as Shepard
      • MartinRudat ponders... it's 3.5" and 5.25" isn't it?
      • MartinRudat
you can spin a 2.5" platter faster than you can spin a 3.5" platter... the arms are shorter, and don't need to be as heavy as 3.5" arms... mechanically, everything on a 2.5" drive is capable of being pushed faster than on a 3.5" drive...

      • i can rip out my laptop drives and put them straight in my desktop machine already
      • MartinRudat
...'course the downside is that they have higher heat output, and they're physically smaller so you can't get the same amount of storage per drive (yet...) oh, and they're more expensive...
      • MartinRudat can't on his laptop... but I've got an adapter, in case it ever comes up. =)
      • MartinRudat kinda wonders if, from the heat and noise pov, if there's going to be variable-speed hard-drives...
      • ...most of the time, most peoples drives probably only need to supply 128-320Kbps, methinks... =)
      • Nyght
Yes, it is.. and no, I hav.... wait, I have seen a few, and some dual height, servers still use them for one. (5.25 harddrives that is)
      • parabelboi has quit
      • MartinRudat
the last time I saw a (new) 5.25" drive was a slow, large (for the time) capacity drive from maxtor, I think...
      • Nyght
There already is variable speed hard drives. I think
      • Now, I didn't "look" at them, I noted them. ;)
      • Okay, reboot time.. I just love firmware upgrades. ;) be back later tonight I imagine.. have some stuff to do unfortunately.
      • MartinRudat
        I've disassembled a full-height 5.25" drive... 'twas quite interesting.
      • Nyght
        Thanks Martin, for your suggestions!
