we need to find someone familiar with the Christian genre to make an automod...

teleGUISE_: the trouble with abstains is they are a delayed 'yes' unless somebody votes 'no'
      • teleGUISE_
exactly... so in a week later they are dumped in the db
      • not sure how else we could do it though.. wasnt it awhile that those would stay open indefinitely?
      • +awhile back
      • inhouseuk: out of curiousity do you know why we stopped the asin populate script? was it just prone to errors or figure the manual version was good enough
      • dlehn has quit
      • fuchs: during the add edit process hitting return after entering a release date assumes you want to enter another date causing you to have to scroll up to [select a country] to advance. Has this been changed?

      • ruaok
teleGUISE_: the script matching was very good, amazon changed it service and the script kept taking longer and longer to complete.
      • so, it was deemed that people will just hand maintain the asins...
      • teleGUISE_
huh...that kind of stinks... though I guess if it kept taking your time away from doing other things then its best
      • ruaok
I'm not very sad about it. people generally favored the manual approach.
      • teleGUISE_
i find myself populating many that should be straight forward (ie.. artist name/album title are identical) and have been in the db for years but no asin ..
      • SenRepus
i dont like things happening autoatically unless they are for sure correct
      • teleGUISE_
but like you said if they made matching harder and harder to keep up with then its not worth it.. I dont mind doing the entering for accuracy but on some artists -none- of the albums have any asins and they should
      • however ... of course they do now :)-
      • ru so did you find out what happened to ll, last night or whatever night it was? Did she go out for drinks?
      • ruaok
hard lock up. that's all I know.
      • I suspect a RAID card issue
      • lets just say I am not very happy about it.
      • teleGUISE_
hmmm.. so presently you have no way to remotely do a reset?
      • ruaok
        not when it hard locks.
      • unless you want to buy us a console server. :)
      • Russss
what raid card are you using?
      • ruaok
        Adaptec 2010S
      • Russss
IIRC there are two adaptec cards which don't suck. I can't remember which ones.
      • ruaok
kevin said that at Friendster they stopped using that card because of intermittend lock ups
      • the other 2010S we have has been flawless for over a year.
      • Russss
we are 100% MegaRAID for SCSI and 3Ware (or software) for SATA. Although MegaRAID has its problems, I've never had to attribute a crash to it
      • ruaok
yeah, three of ours servers have megaraid and I've got a 3ware 9500 for zim when we upgrade it.
      • Russss
actually that's a lie. One of our machines once crashed when we swapped a new drive in.
      • and on the older versions of the megaraid drivers which had a /proc interface, reading from the interface too frequently caused crashes + data corruption...
      • that one sucked bigtime
      • ruaok
        ick
      • Russss
I wrote a nagios plugin for it, worked fine in testing, put it live on 8 or 10 servers within an hour, 3 of them crashed.
      • ruaok
        wow. that sucks
      • Russss
one of those servers was lacking a slave (and we had no current backups), so it caused dataloss...
      • having said that, we have some 3Ware 9550SX-12 cards which we suspect may be causing intermittent disk issues.
      • they are painfully new cards though.
      • ruaok
any issues with the 9500S-4LP ?
      • Russss
nope, not that we know of. We've got 2 or 3 of those
      • ruaok
        phew.
      • Russss
the problem with the 9550 is that it's running our streaming server
      • and sometimes everything just blocks for a minute
      • ruaok
        not good for 'streaming'
      • Russss
which causes the stream to pause for everyone, 50% of whom subsequently disconnect thinking it's died
      • but it's amazingly difficult to diagnose
      • we bought a different NIC for one of the two boxes which is doing this, and that one seems to have problems less frequently...
      • oqp joined the channel
      • minefield.
      • teleGUISE_
...um console servers can be almost as much $ as the server and I can't say I have one of those lying around.
      • doesnt this colo offer apc reboots?
      • or is that more $$
      • Russss
in terms of remote admin, I'd recommend a remote power switch firstly
      • then either a console server or IP KVM
      • ruaok
no such service was mentioned to me
      • teleGUISE_
huh... guess then that means this colo probably doesnt have that then :)-
      • Russss
most colos don't have remote power switching
      • you tend to only get it if you're renting small amounts of space off an ISP
      • teleGUISE_
i know some of the bigger hostes sites have it.. not sure how pricing compares between colo's with and w/o as some offer it as a extra charge or include it depending on the plan
      • Russss
one thing for sure, those APC switches are expensive
      • yllona joined the channel
      • though they're a fairly small part of our overall rack setup costs
      • ruaok
wait... they do have very similar power strips in there.
      • Russss
        APC do "dumb" versions too
      • ruaok
with amp readouts and everything. I wonder...
      • ah.
      • Russss
and they do versions with metering but not switching
      • teleGUISE_
        yea same look not remote
      • of course easier for manufacturing
      • Russss
but it's worth asking I suppose.
      • teleGUISE_
true you never know it might be just a small fee
      • not as flexible as what a console server would do ... but heck of a lot cheaper
      • Russss
sometimes you can't reboot with a console server though
      • ruaok
Hmmm. the power strips do have ethernet plugs.
      • Russss
if it's locked up hard, then you still need a power switch.
      • ruaok
but I assumed that was for power monitoring.
      • Russss
ruaok: then they might be then. But I think the metered-only versions look the same.
      • ruaok
        I'll ask.
      • teleGUISE_
yea.. the ones i have seen have the same look...
      • Russss
hmm, the metered versions only come in zero U format
      • teleGUISE_
actually almost all of them do.. and add metering/remote etc..
      • Russss
so if the power switch is 1U then it's definitely switched
      • ruaok
nope, its a strip along the wall
      • Russss
        aha ok, anyone's guess then.
      • teleGUISE_
wonder if they would let you put your own little apc with ethernet port there... probably not
      • Russss
eh, if it fits in a rack they're not usually too fussy.
      • teleGUISE_
could be an option if they dont offer it anyways..
      • Russss
it's cool if they actually meter your usage properly though. When we go too far over our limit, the breaker trips out
      • teleGUISE_
1 of those I have.. but definitely not new enough and commercial enough for me to want to donate...
      • cuz if it blew something up i would be banned ;)
      • How 'bout using a X-10 Appliance module connected to a phone remote module :) $59 remote reboot

[Global Notice] Hi all. Another note on the DCC exploit....we now have two known ways to avoid the problem. First, as stated before, you can connect to freenode via port 8001 instead of 6667. Second, you can turn off SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) in the router configuration. Thanks!
      • Russss has quit
      • teleGUISE_
didnt think SPI was on by default...
      • could see why AMZ ASIN matching would be a challenge.. even AMZ's own search doesn't result in consistent returns...
      • you click on the artist name and it pulls up a batch of releases... you search by the same artist including a release not found in that list and you get a whole different group!
      • well note entirely different... but you get other releases by the same artist not found in the other search
      • yllona
i think they rely on the CD index included by the label.
      • ex: all sun ra & his [name] arkestra releases, are under "sun ra"
      • and there are at least 20 different [name] arkestra's
      • search "Astro Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra" and it returns a CD for "sun ra" which is correct.
      • teleGUISE_
this case wasnt that complex it was a simple First Last name
      • yllona
again, it has to do with label/distibutor submisison. and they are alway scorrect.
      • *aren't always crrect
      • teleGUISE_
i believe it cookies your results.. cuz now it put the missing album at the second spot on a lookup by artist name
      • yllona
it's matching against your previous searches / recommendations / purchases if you're logged in.
      • log out, then see waht happens
