Freso: yeah fine. I'm sure it's *less* ugly now, right? *grin*
      • Freso
nightgroove: Because not all browsers might send ä as %C3%A4.
      • nightgroove
        my opera does it
      • also my ie
      • so?
      • Freso
      • nightgroove
        uughh
      • dmp_panda now shuts the fuck himself and grabs yetr another coffee :D
      • o_O
      • but it shows as ä jo?!
      • Freso
nightgroove: It does. Because of MB's parser.
      • nightgroove goes to make some tea
      • nightgroove
        I only have until 8:40
      • so I'm late late late
      • Freso
nightgroove: As I said, it's been discussed somewhere, and consensus was to use URL encoded URIs.
      • nightgroove
        bblater in the day guys
      • Freso
(I was of the oppinion to use ä instead of %C3%A4 initially as well.)
      • (Which will also be seen from some of my earlier WP article linkings.)
      • Schika
        cya nightgroove !
      • dmp_panda
        bonne journée le chat ;)
      • Schika: I can't think about the difference between "compose" and "write". To me, it looks the same... and I guess I'll have a lot of difficulties to use one or the other for stuff like free-jazz... how would you phrase the difference?
      • Schika
maybe someone wrote the notes and such - and some other composed the instrumentation
      • dmp_panda
mmmm... I guess I need a wikipedia reading session...
      • Schika
or another idea the song was original written by artist a (written by) and artist B made a "cover" of it with other instruments (composed by)?
      • toxickore has quit
      • another idea... artist a wrote the song and sold it to artist b, who finaly made the song
      • dmp_panda
        nasty artists :P
      • anyhow, IMO we lack an essential concept in MB: compositions (or tunes), which really are not the same thing as tracks...
      • I'm struggling with Jazz compositions been played hundred of times...
      • we sure don't want a composer to compose a tune hundred of times, do we?
      • not to mention "cover" is deeply inadequate to depict the fact somebody do interpret a (jazz) composition...
      • Schika
you mean that we should set the AR one time and this AR apply for all tracks with the same name and artist?
      • Freso
        Okay. The shower thing.
      • dmp_panda
I don't know... but take the example of Take the "A" Train, composed by Ellington, and played by a huge number of different artists...
      • Freso
I'll be back in the eve!
      • Take care, and don't miss me ((too) much)! :D
      • dmp_panda
        ciao Freso
      • do we really want each track be composed by Ellington? (~+400 hundred)
      • Freso has quit
      • or do we really want the very first "Take the..." to be "covered" 400 hundred times?
      • so yes, I really wish we add "entities" for compositions.
      • and we may link tracks to the corresponding composition
      • IMO, this is what we already (sometime) do when we use the first appearance of the tune as a track, and when we use covers AR to it, but it's awkward... and prone to errors... how do we know what is the very first recorded appearance of old tunes?
      • that's random thoughts... I'm not sure this is clear... but I've seen alarming edits already that makes me think we might end up with a nice mess of anarchic and multiple composed by / covered by....
      • people want "composed by" for all the tracks of their album. Nice thing. But they don't want to check/verify ASCAP. And they don't mind if we end-up with artist cluttered with hundreds of "identical" AR "composed by"...
      • Schika
I see what you mean ...
      • dmp_panda
        *sigh*
      • :p
      • Schika
        ;)
      • dmp_panda
When one thinks there are "alarming" edits, one sure needs to take a break from MB :D
      • That said... /me goes back tidying the horribly messed Edith Piaf ;)

Anybody think they could help me get picard working on Linux?
      • I'm using the musicbrainz overlay in Gentoo, so I have all the deps
      • dmp_panda
I add it work (debian sid)
      • VxJasonxV
but whenever I go to start it, I get a traceback ending in: ImportError: /usr/lib/libwx_gtk2u_gizmos-2.6.so.0: symbol _ZNK11wxClassInfo8IsKindOfEPKS_, version WXU_2.6 not defined in file libwx_gtk2u_core-2.6.so.0 with link time reference
      • dmp_panda
        mmm...
      • VxJasonxV
I've tried re-emerging wxGTK (the package that owns that file), even changing some of the use flags, no dice :/
      • dmp_panda
what version of wxgtk2 is that exactly?
      • VxJasonxV
        2.6.3.2
      • dmp_panda
kay... who is maintaining tge Gentoo overlay? I guess he would be of more use than me :/
      • s/tge/the
      • VxJasonxV
I... don't remember their name. I think I can find it though
      • juffo?
      • name found familiar?
      • dmp_panda
        no :(
      • but intgr more :)
      • I don't know if he comes on irc though
      • VxJasonxV
        I've seen him around
      • dmp_panda
I guess he's your best shot. Just curious: do you use a stable profile?
      • VxJasonxV
        reasonably
      • dmp_panda
        lol
      • VxJasonxV
        I don't rice out my gentoo, if that's what you're asking :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkyard_%28album%29 I've never seen so much bollocks
      • dmp_panda
        hi mud ;)
      • mudcrow
wrong studio, wrong date, wrong producer, wrong info on tracy pew and wrong tracklisting
      • hi panda
      • Schika
        "never mind the bollocks..." :D
      • mudcrow
the first sentence is correct, none of the others are...
      • dmp_panda
lol - sometimes, I don't even understand why wikipedia persist on maintaining their own data rather than sourcing it from MB...
      • mudcrow
I love this "Richard Mazda has claimed that his dedication and perseverance played a major role in the album's sound, and it's completion" he engineered two tracks, hardly a major role :)

VxJasonxV: re: the gentoo problem - http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/1978
      • VxJasonxV
I should get intgr to modify the ebuild to make wxpython depend on wxGTK so that it builds in the right order
      • thanks luks
      • luks
i know this is probably a stupid question here :)
      • but does somebody here have a lot of MB untagged files?
      • preferable with very ugly tags
      • dmp_panda
        yes
      • no ugly tags though :)
      • ahhh, yes I have old mpc files
      • luks
        i need some test cases
      • dmp_panda
        ok. more precisely?
      • luks
if i send you a little app to extract the tags, would you be willing to run it on them?
      • and then send me the result
      • dmp_panda
        yes. a linux app.
      • I don't have a windows at hand :/
      • luks
ok, i'll hack up some script
      • dmp_panda
        kay
      • luks
        thanks

      • loool: look at the label line http://www.amazon.fr/Genius-Keyboards-Art-Tatum... (this is released by the label Giants of Jazz,) - I guess amz.fr people do abuse some substance
      • VxJasonxV has tons of crappily tagged files
      • VxJasonxV
about half of my archive is mb tagged, the other half is a mess
      • FauxFaux
Dump them all on Picard? It won't go nuts, I promise! ;)
      • VxJasonxV
        HA
      • dmp_panda
makes me think I may even have files that make picard crash :p
      • Schika
        i'm on linux
      • luks
FauxFaux: that's exactly what i'm working on :)
      • you can put them all to picard and let it do it's job
      • it will be a little more automated than simply puid lookups
      • Schika
        Fedora Core 3
      • FauxFaux wonders if I'll ever put the effort in such that I'll be able to hit the "move to folders/filenames baesd on tags" and there won't be any collisions or files left.
      • VxJasonxV
luks: I'm up for testing, btw

      • then it requires a first-pass-run to find the fingerprint, retag them identically
      • and then a 2nd pass to remove all the duplicates
