luks, and chocomo: have you read ruaok's statement? think about making the most people happy, not satisfy needs for cruel conversions to unreadable scripts :-)
2006-02-09 04046, 2006
g0llum knows his statement about "unreadable" is uncorrect, but nevertheless
2006-02-09 04045, 2006
chocomo
well i'm not liek te SC5DR crowd.. I can *wait*
2006-02-09 04052, 2006
chocomo
so ok
2006-02-09 04002, 2006
g0llum
i've been thinking about the discussion we had yesterday...
2006-02-09 04016, 2006
chocomo
I forgot
2006-02-09 04018, 2006
chocomo
:)
2006-02-09 04008, 2006
g0llum
what if MB stored all artists in the english form (after all, MB is currrently english-international, the whole mb_server is not multilingual for example and requires english knowledge), and we facilitate tagging against the alias' in the other scripts, not the other way around. this would make much more sense given the current restrictions...
2006-02-09 04040, 2006
chocomo
hmm :/
2006-02-09 04049, 2006
chocomo
but what is english?
2006-02-09 04000, 2006
luks
MB would lost a lot of moderators
2006-02-09 04005, 2006
chocomo
does that means that norwegian artists has to be stored with out æøå?
2006-02-09 04011, 2006
g0llum
why, you can tag against it, np..
2006-02-09 04012, 2006
chocomo
I couldn't agree to that
2006-02-09 04034, 2006
chocomo
Sissel kirkeboe?
2006-02-09 04041, 2006
g0llum
if i convert an album to VA, i have to click on all the non-english scripts and see if i have selected the correct one (ok, once you did it a few time, you regonize the artist name)
2006-02-09 04041, 2006
chocomo
do you mena that g0llum?
2006-02-09 04059, 2006
g0llum
there are a lot of such unconvenient things in mb_server with the current policy
2006-02-09 04012, 2006
chocomo
that can be easily rectifyed by haveign the sortname in the search show
2006-02-09 04049, 2006
chocomo
i'd agree with this if it had been the policy all along
2006-02-09 04001, 2006
g0llum
we can even create a similar option on mb_server where it would display the artist' in their native script (if we labelled one of the alias as such, or added a field to the artist which defines what his default script would be to display)
2006-02-09 04012, 2006
chocomo
but since we've been figting the uphill battle for as long as we have.. I can't
2006-02-09 04016, 2006
g0llum
it has been. it has been changed only recently (for cyrillic)
2006-02-09 04022, 2006
chocomo
we can make the dagger default to tagging with english
2006-02-09 04029, 2006
chocomo
I have no problem with that
2006-02-09 04045, 2006
g0llum
i don't care that much for asian. their it makes more sense, and the usage is distinct (in most cases, kill bill soundtrack is an exception)
2006-02-09 04000, 2006
g0llum
same thing for the website, then it's consistent.
2006-02-09 04011, 2006
luks
i still don't understand why kanji is ok and cyrillic is not
2006-02-09 04016, 2006
g0llum
you wouldnt notice a thing, it would display thingies like you selected them in the prefs
2006-02-09 04032, 2006
chocomo
but listen. if you mkae the default script whatever and make it liquid wich is sown. then that is what its talkign about
2006-02-09 04058, 2006
chocomo
luks: especilly since I can "read" cyrilic better than kanji ^^
2006-02-09 04013, 2006
g0llum
luks: because. what have i written above? you don't have many international albums which feature asian artists
2006-02-09 04021, 2006
chocomo
yo-yo-ma
2006-02-09 04035, 2006
luks
g0llum: all anime soundtrack composers
2006-02-09 04051, 2006
g0llum
we could fine-tune which representation is chosen with the album language.
2006-02-09 04055, 2006
chocomo
all nintendo type soundtracks
2006-02-09 04009, 2006
chocomo
but that is in schema 2
2006-02-09 04012, 2006
chocomo
do yes
2006-02-09 04017, 2006
chocomo
*so yes
2006-02-09 04039, 2006
g0llum
remember what i proposed a while ago: to use different artist entities for the different languages. i understand this is not what the 3rd party licencees wanted. but now we still display unreadable artist names on track listings for most of the editors.
2006-02-09 04040, 2006
chocomo
how about this
2006-02-09 04008, 2006
g0llum
even worse, if we start to display AR's on the track listings, where one asian artist features on a track. everything else is english, but the artist name.
2006-02-09 04012, 2006
chocomo
the artist name is the correct one for the artist comes from (eg cyrilic, kanji etc) but the site defaults to showign english/latin1 ??
2006-02-09 04026, 2006
g0llum
then we start using AR's for the (feat. ) clauses, and then you'll have other options again, and and and...
2006-02-09 04051, 2006
chocomo
read what I said
2006-02-09 04000, 2006
chocomo
that's what I want
2006-02-09 04011, 2006
g0llum
yes. in the end, people want to chose which representation they'd like to show the website, as well as what is used in tagging.
2006-02-09 04018, 2006
chocomo
yes
2006-02-09 04020, 2006
g0llum
and everybody is happy
2006-02-09 04022, 2006
chocomo
yes
2006-02-09 04030, 2006
chocomo
I son'tr understand what you're arguing?
2006-02-09 04044, 2006
chocomo
:)
2006-02-09 04001, 2006
g0llum
what the default representation on the website is, and what most users expect it to be.
2006-02-09 04011, 2006
chocomo
read what I said will you
2006-02-09 04013, 2006
g0llum
chocomo: read yesterdays chatlog
2006-02-09 04017, 2006
chocomo
how about
2006-02-09 04021, 2006
chocomo
the artist name is the correct one for the artist comes from (eg cyrilic, kanji etc) but the site defaults to showign english/latin1 ??
2006-02-09 04033, 2006
luks
i'll do anything to make it easier for people who can read kanji, cyrillic, greek, etc.
2006-02-09 04035, 2006
chocomo
don't tel lem that. i was here
2006-02-09 04037, 2006
luks
but i'll never agree that english version of the name should be primary
2006-02-09 04054, 2006
chocomo
not primary. just the site shoving it default to users?
