users should moderate when drunk! maybe we should get them to walk a white line as part of the login process. Have a moving white line graphic and ask them to follow it with the mouse !

ah, she was already in the database as cyrillic !

nope, nechto13 just added it, an edit artist would have only needed one mod
nechto13, you dont need to add the artist first and then merge them to add the alias or edit their name
2005-12-01 33539, 2005
nechto13
got it
2005-12-01 33541, 2005
inhouseuk
also I'd already added the latin alias to prepare for the edit artist
2005-12-01 33548, 2005
nechto13
oh, first time i found her she had no aliases so i figured it would be 2 mods either way

and this method is arguably wrong, really, but im not going to vote against it for someone who is actually participating and learning rather than just coming by once to tag their songs and screw up the database

is "nacht" acceptable german slang like english "night"?
I'm going crazy! I just made myself a coffee and left it in the kitchen

even with everyone using picard the encoding has to be supported by the OS otherwise renaming in different encodings is useless for saving and renaming purposes
2005-12-01 33536, 2005
nechto13
I downloaded picard and I still had giberish in artist names in windows
2005-12-01 33544, 2005
nechto13
xp
2005-12-01 33514, 2005
nechto13
and I have russian installed and type in it all the time
2005-12-01 33549, 2005
inhouseuk
correct, also the hardware or software that is used to play the files needs to support id3v2.4 and utf
2005-12-01 33553, 2005
Schika
yeah UNICODE isn't supported well in windows
2005-12-01 33536, 2005
nechto13
and don't even get me started on mp3 players
2005-12-01 33551, 2005
nechto13
by the way ipod has no russian support
2005-12-01 33503, 2005

nechto13: that doesn't surprise me, the squeezebox hardware player I use here makes a complete mess displaying cyrillic tags

that's why I think maybe it would be better to transliterate artist names in all unsupported scripts and have aliases with right encoding
2005-12-01 33507, 2005
inhouseuk
with artist names at least you have the choice of using the sortname which should be in latin script
2005-12-01 33553, 2005
inhouseuk
with tracknames that option isn't currently available
2005-12-01 33539, 2005
nechto13
you still get gibberish in the artist name in id3 tag and there's not much that can be done about that
2005-12-01 33511, 2005
inhouseuk
you can set picard to use the sortname instead of the artistname
2005-12-01 33513, 2005
inhouseuk
ummm, maybe not in the tag though, it might be only for the directory/file names
2005-12-01 33526, 2005
nechto13
are you using picard?
2005-12-01 33521, 2005
inhouseuk
nope, I use a bunch of perl scripts over the top of the libmusicbrainz library on FreeBSD, at the time I started to use musicbrainz the tagger wasn't available for unix
2005-12-01 33530, 2005
inhouseuk
also, I tag the files as part of the ripping/encoding process straight from CD
2005-12-01 33536, 2005
nechto13
inhouseuk, ah so you don't have files without cds?
2005-12-01 33554, 2005
inhouseuk
not generally no

I prefer to buy my music on phyical media
2005-12-01 33515, 2005
nechto13
that's nice, I have some files for which all I have is tape
my wife has a load of tapes of russian music, which at sometime I need to put onto different media or mp3. But I haven't got around to it yet. We'll probably buy some of it on CD when we next visit Ukraine
