is there a way to "rebase" an edit that failed due to conflicts, or do I have to redo it from scratch? (https://musicbrainz.org/edit/57661813)

dominikh: heh. something like new editing schema would be that i suppose. but no, you have to do it again. sadly
      • dominikh
well thank god it was a trivial change, this time
      • (not one that should conflict with any of the changes made, but hey :P)
      • CatCat
in the future we may well actually try to implement something liek that (if it's what i think it is wich is to say i don't eally know how to rebase soemthing :D)
      • but yea. it's tivial changes a good idea. it's bad if, sat a whole several disc editing fails or the work is lost due to somethngi with the browser or what not
      • dominikh
well, in version control system terms, an edit would be a list of changes, based on/referenced to an existing version. rebasing would be taking these changes and applying them on top of a different version instead
      • CatCat
I don't acually think any conflicting edits will fail something huge liek that but
      • ohhh. yes! re-base as in making a new "base" i get it :D
      • dominikh
I was very surprised that adding a data track failed because track times of existing tracks changed.
      • CatCat
        hmm
      • yea that makes sense (to me) unfortiunatly
      • since setting that is probably conflicting with the edit to "set times"
      • dominikh
does that mean the atomic unit here is the entire track list, not individual tracks? what'd happen if two edits changed track length and track names respectively?
      • CatCat
but yea. idk, maybe make a ticket for that. it should prevent people editing (or give a warning atleast) if there is an open edit times edit whiel trying ot set datatrack
      • yvanzo
dominikh: are you looking for https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-3016 ?
      • BrainzBot
MBS-3016: MB should warn of the potential for "The tracklist has changed since this edit was created" failed depedency at edit submit time
      • CatCat
huh. when editing the tracktimes it would have to be editing the data track too i susspected? somehow. i don't know, i'd need ot see the affected edits really
      • ooh that's a good one
      • CatCat votes for that
      • dominikh
      • ooh, it's probably the disc ID…
      • gosh darn.
      • CatCat
mhm. yes set datatracks by disc id would affect the "data" tracktoo
      • oh my, yes, sicne that is medium-wide i think and you're adding another datatrack
      • *to* the medium
      • anyway if you have another issue liek this you can ask and i'll apprve the edit that may conflict with the net editso oy udon't have ot wait a week to do that medium edit
      • dominikh nods
      • dominikh
I'll try not to conflict with myself next time :P

      • i may not know coding and such, but the mb.editing system and editing in general I've got experience with. for 14 odd years now
      • anyway all I know about code is gained through osmosis reading the stuff the write her or in #metabrainz since those early times :D
      • so i did pick up a little bit :D

      • a go*
      • dominikh
I made some tiny edits in 2009, then returned a couple years later and things "somehow felt less bad". I later learned about NGS :P
      • CatCat
yea NGS fixed a lot of things (and broke a few things I still miss :'()
      • I also miss rlated and new edits ontop of entities
      • it's what really spurred me to vote
      • michelv has quit
      • we need to re-introduce that somehow. it's what will bring voters back (turned off for newbie accounts, but then turned on once you "graduate" )
      • dominikh
I don't know what you are referring to
      • CatCat
I have ideas for improving the editing "usertype status" make it more tier
      • so now we have beginner usertype which need to do type 10 edits acepted before they can even vote
      • and tnhe regular users and thne voted in usereditors
      • i have ideas for making thatm ore granular
      • and making the editing interface also become more complex the more you need it (eg power-users want different interfaces than newbies or just casual surfers)
      • dominikh
        I see
      • CatCat
there is a redesign of the website in the works. chhavi is the person, and she also had a gsoc this year related to it
      • dominikh
is there any information about the redesign out there?
      • CatCat
        let mesee.
      • bemeurer joined the channel
      • there's chhavi's workable tickets.. https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-9652 and https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-9665 (any MBS ticket with type "Design") also there is talk in #metabrainz about it

right now she is working on graduating/her work so this is a bit on hold for now. it'll resume in a while i assume
      • dominikh
        thanks!
      • CatCat
she definitely would want input form you on those and other design tikcets tohugh.
      • so far there's only been the handfull of us discussing this and having a relatively "new" (yet database/code-y knowledgable) woudl be very valuable for us i think
      • dominikh
I'm still finding my way around MB, but I'll make sure to give feedback if I have something worth saying
      • CatCat
        thanks!
      • but ye the "still finding my way around" aspect is kinda important too. sicne we deff want that to be easier. and that's a huge point of this redesign also
      • dominikh
        aah, I'm a grumpy elitist, I don't care for easy :P
      • CatCat
(that's kinda what i'm getting at here too ;P I want us not to forget that "grumpy elitis database-nerd tpes liek you and me are also a user type we should cater too, ot just 16 year olds with smartphones :D)
      • dominikh
I think your idea of making the interface more complex as you need it is a good idea. "easy" interfaces tend to make things more difficult for power users
      • CatCat
(not that 16 yr olds with smartphones can't be the "grumpy elitist"-type)
      • exactly!

catcat what I do not really like is that I have to click an extra screen op to see 'open edits'.
      • It would be much easier to see those within the actual screen.
      • Not just colours, but the actual change
      • And the voting screen itself is a lot of work.
      • Why not have two columns: From and To so you can see the change much easier.
