hmm, got a couple cases where I'm not sure which side of the line of "edit" vs "remix" something falls on
the later version of the work isn't called a "remix" in the track listing, but it has a significantly different duration due to different intro and outro segments transitioning between the previous and next songs on gapless albums (in both releases)
I'll go with "edit" for now
antlarr
I'm in no way an expert, but I'd agree that's an "edit"
(ignore the lyrics in the lead-in on DEAD SPACE, they're looped from the previous track in a gapless album)

rcombs: I'd say this is grade A+ "remix" situation
but yea. i can't even hear how they're supposed to be the same song

CatQuest: a "remix" is a new recording of the same work, linked to the existing recording
CatQuest
uh. i know that
rcombs
I don't think this is derived from the original recording at all
CatQuest
then.. it's not a remix but a completely new song?
why link them?
rcombs
that's how I'd classify it, yeah
but kepstin was saying that if there's no new writing credit (e.g. lyrics) then it shouldn't be a separate work
CatQuest
if they are completely unrelated then they don't need classifications
rcombs
well it's derived from the _work_
CatQuest
granted it's early here and I didn't listen very turoughly. but "remix" can be very "over" done
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
rcombs
not sure what you mean by that, sorry?
CatQuest
oh sorry, it's a "shrug" emoticon. it means i don't relaly know either :)
rcombs
I meant by "'over' done"
CatQuest
oh.
oh that whoever remixes soemthing goes over the top and adds all kinds of things and basiclaly it sounds nothing a like. you're saying it's derived for mthe same work
i honestly couldn't hear anything except mad electrobeats tbh :)
but it's early. im not yet awake
rcombs
oh, yeah, I'm saying at that point it seems weird to classify it as a "remix" recording rather than a new derivative work
CatQuest
need to eat breakfast too :D
ah yea. well
reosarevok
rcombs: If you feel it's a new work, add a new work. They can always be merged :)
CatQuest
hm 🤔 I though "remix" was "recording-recording" linking? reosarevok?
rcombs
it is, yeah
which is why I don't think it applies here
CatQuest
no?
reosarevok: can a recording from one work be aremix of a recording fro ma nother work? is that.. ok?
also right in asking kepsin too
reosarevok
Sometimes yes (a remix with new lyrics for example)
Also sometimes something called a remix isn't really a remix at all, but a new track based on something else :)
CatQuest
they're arguing that there's basically "new everything"
CatQuest goes for food and maybe tea
rcombs
in this case it's not called a "remix" in the track listing or anything like that
it's just listed as a song based on another song
which sounds like a new work linked to the old one (with "based on" rather than "arrangement of", according to kepstin), with the recording linked only to the new work
Leftmost has quit
also I'm assuming that if one recording is an edit of another, then both should be linked to the corresponding work
Leftmost joined the channel
also I'm uncertain when to put "Arranger" on a recording and when to put it on a work, so currently I'm putting it on both

there's also apparently some disagreement over whether tracks on Alstroemeria Records DANCEHALL albums should have their track artists tagged as "Alstroemeria Records", the arranger (often, but not always, Masayoshi Minoshima), or the vocalist if present and otherwise the arranger
it's apparently ambiguous on the CD packaging, but the iTunes releases use the third option (vocalist if present, otherwise arranger), so I guess I'll switch to that going forwards (I'd been using the second option)
