that modal may be a "search" modal tho, and you're not searching
      • and I guess you currently hit "edit" next to artists
      • and there is no such button for durations, and probably shouldn't be
      • reosarevok
You don't need to hit "edit" at all if there's only one artist, of course
      • darwin
like I said, most of my issues are kinda minor things where I have to scroll the page to do something
      • reosarevok
(although I sometimes do, because yeah, that's the only easy way to go up/down :p )
      • darwin
but they're so common that they take a lot of effort in sum
      • oh, a favorite hated one. add artist from modal. always have to scroll it.
      • and a bunch of space is wasted by annotations text box
      • I feel like I should state that I am aware that the release editor is a very very complicated and often nested UI, and that it's not trivial to create non-scrolling in every case

forme, in the in-linesearch (like darwin mentioned having to scroll to go "next")
      • my pita is that ifi select something (eg recording to link to a work, a release ot lni kto a series) it doesnt remember where it was whne i try linknig the *next* one
      • i wish it did that. wish it evne gave soem sort of visual for those already "selected" for this edit (edit work and edit seris, or ad wor and addseries)
      • it'z the #1 reason I don't add stuff to series :o
      • imagine a series with 200 entries. you cant add thme in any kind of batch what-so ever
      • it's a mega pita

      • i was just saying that it existed, not that anyone needed to use it...
      • reosarevok
Sure :) I guess it might be good to off it in case someone is very actively requesting takedowns of places that link to illegal downloads
      • I think most often people off just so that nobody can link *them* to such downloads, but dunno :)

that being considered a "series" is weird af to me
      • isn't it basically a "fan made compilation" with the fan being rolling stone?
      • Lotheric
        it's not a release though, it's a series
      • darwin
could I create a series, "my 10 favorite albums" ?
      • Lotheric
collections are more appropriate for that
      • unless it's of interest to a larger audience imho
      • I have a series of albums winning awards
      • that I made
      • it doens't have to be a series of compilations with a theme
      • darwin
but there's no rule against it?
      • Lotheric
        not that I know about
      • darwin
I just don't get what the entity a series is supposed to document
      • SothoTalKer
A series is a sequence of separate release groups, releases, recordings, works or events with a common theme.
      • darwin
I thought it was when producers created a series
      • not when rolling stone made a list, so I'm confused.
      • ok, my theme is "albums by americans"
      • prepare for a series of millions upon millions of releases?
      • Lotheric
I wouldn't see the point but why not, there's a series of mastered for itunes releases
      • SothoTalKer
        "ok"
      • Lotheric
You could create a series of cover art with a common theme
      • possibilities are endless
      • darwin
as a person with a database background, I don't like entities that are arbitrarily defined and unbounded, but ok :)
      • SothoTalKer
one should have the option to group various releases, works, etc. by some common thing and series are currently the only way.
      • darwin
I'm very comfortable with "the people who created it consider it a series"
      • this, much less comfortable, heh :D
      • NOW! That's what I call music! = series
      • SothoTalKer
        one could use public collections
      • darwin
I think public collections are appropriate for that use
      • SothoTalKer
since collections can now be shared
      • darwin
a collection is user content. a series is a fact. in my mind.
      • SothoTalKer
        "albums i like" - series :D
      • ITS A FACT
      • rdswift
        But not universally accepted.
      • darwin
in general we're trying to document facts asserted by the creators of the objects, not facts asserted by random people, but sure
      • reosarevok
Public collections would be a good alternative for this, yes
      • SothoTalKer
        i am the law
      • reosarevok
        But they're not (currently) sorted
      • rdswift
When I think of a "series", I think of things like Vol.1, Vol.2, etc.
      • darwin
        13:02 <... SothoTalKer> i am the law

reosarevok what's you view on 'playlists' like itunes, spotify ones ?
      • should we add them to MB or not
      • reosarevok
I'd say generally no, because there's nothing differentiating my own random playlist from any other
      • At least in Spotify
      • I'm willing to make exceptions for especially relevant ones
      • regakakobigman joined the channel
      • iconoclasthero
ultimately, what would be a good way to do this would be to have a section/site that pulls from MB but that you can create your own "series"
      • then they could be shared, made public, rated, tagged, etc.
      • but only if it was reasonable to do something from that.
      • Lotheric
playlists are popular on spotify, ppl share them on reddit etc..
      • iconoclasthero
it also could be a way of directing traffic to a streaming site for revenue.
      • Lotheric
having public collections or series or playlists that ppl could share would be a plus for site trafic
      • imho
      • like Picard is bringing more ppl to edit on MB
      • iconoclasthero
        thats how i got here
      • reosarevok
Lotheric: I absolutely agree with sharing public collections and whatnot
      • iconoclasthero
i think that is a blue sky kind of idea...
      • reosarevok
I just don't think they should be releases
      • And I'm not convinced they should be series
      • iconoclasthero
what about this: use the series bucket for now...see if the numbers start taking off and then go from there?
      • if no one uses it then it is moot.
      • otherwise, you can solicit feedback on the feature to figure out what to do with it
      • Lotheric
maybe it could be added to critiquebrainz (reviews and playlists)
      • and then integrated with MB (facts)
      • in the long run
      • just thinking aloud
      • reosarevok
So, the main difference between series and collections is that in series, everyone can see whether something is linked to one from the main page for the release/recording/whatever
      • iconoclasthero
what about looking at how goodreads does it?
      • reosarevok
For collections, that's not the case, you need to specifically go to the collections section
      • But then you can see it's in "10 best industrial albums", by reosarevok
      • (I do not have that collection :p )
