Hey folks, I'm looking for advice on managing multiple live versions of individual songs (using beets, in case that's relevant)...
Between the style guide for concert recordings and beets' custom Path format strings, I think I have the case of a bootleg of an entire concert sorted out

don't ask to ask, just ask?

But in the case of "hey, I really like how this artist plays with the interpretation of this one song from show to show, so I have seventeen live recordings of just this song"... What's the right way to handle disambiguating them, by date/venue/city, whatever
Sorry, my intent was to establish the context for the question, not to ask permission to ask a question.

well, in the case of phish, they sometimes do two shows on the same night
so actually none of those are disambiguating
for most artists, it would be, heh
or maybe I'm wrong, and am misremembering?
but yeah, ultimately date alone is probably disambiguating?
Scruloose
Yeah, I've come across an example or two of an early show and a late show on the same day. It's an edge case, but...
Does the date tag support full YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS timestamp format? The spec here: http://id3.org/id3v2.4.0-structure seems to indicate that this is allowed?
And is there an equivalent for the "live" albumtype but for an individual recording?

Scruloose: The ID3v2.4 specifies a lot of things, sadly player support is very spotty
Scruloose
Haha yes, that's very true. But as long as I can cram the information in there in a way that beets can see it (and thus incorporate it into the path/file-naming logic), I'm not too concerned about whether players are aware of it for this purpose.
But I don't want to try and add tags that musicbrainz itself will strip out or truncate as being invalid.
...assuming that's even how things work. I haven't yet done any messing around with submitting or editing on MB, only reading.
elomatreb[m]
Musicbrainz as a database does not support time-of-day resolution for timestamp fields (release dates, etc)
With the exception of Events I guess, which can have a start time
Scruloose
Okay, fair enough. Does it have a "live" flag that can be set on an individual recording?
elomatreb[m]
The convention is to enter the live recording information into its disambiguation comment (See https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Recording#Liv...), and, if you relate the recording to a Work, you can set the "live" attribute on that relationship
Scruloose
Ah, okay. That seems promising, thanks! I may still have to do some finicky "custom attribute" stuff in beets for my purpose, because I don't think its MB integration goes quite that far... but that's my problem, not a shortcoming of Musicbrainz.

And honestly, for these cases I'm okay with having them suffixed with .1 and .2 in my directory structure, which is what beets does by default with duplicates.

(I'm okay with that once I figure out how to pull the disambig stuff mentioned by elomatreb[m] from the MB database into my beets path generator as needed, that is.)

hey
when copying and pasting artist credits it doesn't copy/paste the Artist as credited field.
I tried and it worked here (Chrome on Ubuntu, what are you using?)
iconoclasthero
I didn't try to see if it would only change e.g., the "Sonny Boy Williamson I" track entries to the correct SBW and put the correct credited it properly.
