What's the right way to handle hymns in Musicbrainz?
The problem is that there are potentially three things going on in a hymn. There's a hymn tune, which usually has a name and a composer. And there's a text, for which an author is often credited.
The thing is, the text and the tune may not have been written with each other in mind at all. So while a combination of tune and text creates a hymn (and a work), the same tune and text may be combined with other texts or tunes to make other hymns.
And getting all that information in an easy-to-use way is just kind of messy.

A preliminary check indicates that you can use "is based on" relationships to indicate this (e.g. the German national hymn, which has different authors for the music and text: https://musicbrainz.org/work/9f5f27a9-b337-3fa6...)

Yeah. I wish there were a better relation. "is based on" sort of implies there were changes. But the tune *is* the tune. Something like "uses tune" <tune work> and "is setting of" <text work> would be great, but is probably too specific to be generally useful.

The tune is the same in that example, so it uses the "later version of" for that, fwiw

*"version of" I meant of course
toddobryan
Again, "later version of" implies something is different.
Well, and I'm forgetting that the melody could be the same and someone else could provide a different harmonization.
Maybe I need to start a Hymnbrainz.

You're actually correct now that I think about it, but "version of" is still correct because it's a shortened version. Not as a good an example as I thought, sorry (I also linked the wrong one, lol)

Why can't data in the real world be nice and neat?! :-)

hey is it possible to create a script that automatically collapses ISRC and similar edits? eg https://beta.musicbrainz.org/artist/f1548c5b-32... for "add isrc" and "add puids (an older edit type but still) and such where it could be collapsed and reduced to a small line and then expandable?
oh antara, if such is the case thne the pūtātara should have an alias (both the regualr and misspeleld variants)
if you have time, can you make a ticket to add both to the pūtātara and if you have it, the sources for that information (i deifnitly want to read those!)
