I think there's a related project that does that psychoacoustic stuff, but I might be confused
      • it's not in the primary database, at least

Howdy, almost definitely simple user error, but I'm trying to get absubmit on beets up and, upon investigating why it doesn't work, I'm just seeing streaming_extractor_music segfault after Compute audio features (latest binary from https://acousticbrainz.org/download). Is this the right place for support?

need help with an editing problem. I have the CD for a release and have attached a TOC, but the track lengths are wildly wrong from the TOC, but I'm unable to fix them. Why aren't they getting corrected by the TOC?
      • Wait, do the track durations not get set automatically?
      • ah, I guess not. Didn't realize that.
      • darwin
I'm not sure what you mean?
      • sometimes there's a wrong TOC attached to a release
      • eharris
I didn't realize that I had to go to the right TOC and enter an edit to update the track lengths. I thought that was automatic if there was only one Disc ID on the release.
      • I guess I haven't been updating the lengths when I needed to.
      • darwin
unfortunately I don't know the details of this
      • eharris
I've added quite a few disc id's to releases that didn't have any, and because the track lengths weren't editable after that, I assumed they were getting populated from the TOC, but apparently they weren't.
      • That's kinda obscure/non-intuitive
      • darwin
I think tracklist durations are inferred from *recording* durations
      • but not from TOC durations
      • but, again, I don't really know about this
      • eharris
Well the track lengths are editable unless there's a TOC attached, so it seems the other way around
      • darwin
weird, but I guess makes sense.
      • evelyn
darwin: I think it's the other way round? https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Recording
      • darwin
as I said repeatedly, I really don't know about this, lol!
      • but I know there is a case where one direction is inferred
      • ens0 has quit
      • eharris
I think "inferred" is way too relaxed a term for it. When the lengths become uneditable, that's more like "dictated"
      • eFfeM joined the channel
      • atj
eharris: let's avoid the hyperbole. The lengths become uneditable once a TOC is added to the release and that is clearly displayed in the release editor.
      • We can argue about whether that is the correct thing to do, but I'm sure there was a logical reason behind it.
      • eharris
atj: Right, that makes sense, if the length also get set by the TOC. But they don't, at least not automatically.
      • atj
Yes, I understand that you don't think it makes sense.
      • In the meantime, can you remove the TOC, fix the lengths and the re-add it?
      • And then file a bug?
      • eharris
atj: I finally discovered that there is a mechanism to change the track lengths to fit the TOC, it was just hidden and I had no clue (and there was no indication) that that was needed.
      • I may file a bug, now that I understand whats going on.
      • atj
        You "may" file a bug?
      • eharris
I generally don't rush to file bugs unless I can't discover a reason why something that seems unintuitive is the way it is.
      • If I discover a reason why it is that way, then I won't file a bug
      • Glassjoe joined the channel
      • p9 joined the channel
      • atj
Well, I don't think automatically setting the track lengths from a TOC makes sense unless they are not already set.
      • I've checked the git history and this behaviour has been in place since at least the time the release editor was converted to React (2014).
      • darwin
eharris: in the case I'm talking about, where recordings get durations from tracklist durations, it's "inferred" .. in your case it's more "enforced" (nicer word than "dictated")
      • atj
why wouldn't you infer recording durations from the tracklist when they are first created? seems sensible to me.
      • eharris
Yes, enforced is a better word. dictated just came to me first.
      • atj
eharris: I can't find any explanation for the "no editing of track lengths when a TOC is attached to a release" behaviour
      • darwin
in general filing a ticket is not looked down upon, though I agree that it might be good to ask here occasionally until someone explains the rationale
      • the staff generally welcomes people filing tickets and being actively involved in the development process
      • eharris
At the very least, there should be some indication on the track editing screen that points users to how to update the track lengths based on the TOC, and also that it's needed if the user knows they are wrong
      • I never had any idea that updating them needed creating another edit in an entirely different area.
      • which is why I haven't updated them even when I know they looked wrong, because it wasn't clear how, since they became un-editable.
      • Glassjoe has quit
      • levine
Perhaps an improvement suggestion could be that the dialog for adding a TOC would include a checkbox for also setting the track times.
      • Which should perhaps only be allowed if it is the only TOC, etc. etc.
      • atj
        Yep, seems reasonabel
      • *reasonable
      • eharris
that might be good too. Although currently setting the TOC doesn't also show you the track durations of all the other disc ID's, which might lead people to accidentally changing a lot of releases to match one "weird" one
      • darwin
eharris: in case it was unclear, I was encouraging you to file a ticket. better to file a ticket and have a brief dialogue about why it's not desired than not file one :)
      • eharris
It totally makes sense that you'd have to manually pick which TOC to set the track lengths from if there's more than one TOC.
      • I probably will. Will wait a few hours to see if someone speaks up with a good reasoning
      • darwin
        reosarevok: ^^ fyi
      • atj
to be honest I think the TOC functionality isn't that widely used these days
      • darwin
I think there are certain people whose like "area" is TOCs, but lots of people don't deal with them at all
      • atj
CDs just aren't that popular these days
      • eharris
Yeah, it does seem like most people just get their media digitally these days. I guess I'm old school for still having a ton of CD's.
      • Although that's why I'm doing all this work now to rip my collection to flac and make sure that all the tags and art are right, so I hope to never have to do this again.
