I have no idea what visualization I'm expecting, if it's just a crude waveform "diff" sort of thing like, or a spectrum diff, or something of the sort.
(macOS program, btw)
darwin
VxJasonxV: I think such a thing exists, but basically
as opposed to the newer version of the song, on the right, which peaks in 23kHz
darwin
weird that they're not the same scale
(as you mentioned)
VxJasonxV
they're not at the same scale because the two versions have different final mastering
the previous version of the song was extracted from PSP (UMD) media. The new version was a direct digital release via Steam OST
I don't recall what the source format of the original version of the song was, that was... a very long time ago.
darwin
yeah, I mean, basically, decode to wav with ffmpeg, then generate spectrogram with sox
but the previous version is almost certainly lossly compressed
*lossy
VxJasonxV
absolutely
there was no doubt about that, and it wasn't the intent of the discovery. Just comparing the files themselves against each other and really being able to visualize what you would otherwise only hear.
I would have to sit down and coerce ffmpeg to render the spectrograph with consistent everythings to get the graph more comparable, but I don't need to do that anymore. The newer tracks is most certainly better quality in every way.
darwin
ffmpeg -> wav is trivial
why not use sox, which everyone else does?
VxJasonxV
because I don't use sox
Did you just "no true scot", me?
( /s )
darwin
heheh, no true sox
VxJasonxV
rofl
part of the problem is that I was very hung up on literally doing `ffmpeg in out | sox -`, I like one-shots.
darwin
yeah I think in general sox operates on files other than -
probably could have put those all in one message, apologies
anyway, yeah, the two files are *slightly* different, very slightly, but 48000 is pretty obviously different to my ear in further ways, and it's not just cropped at the top end. good enough for me
back to what I had been doing before.

VxJasonxV: I use audacity
VxJasonxV
while I admit it's been ages since I've used audacity, from what I know the waveform is way too simple, and I don't know of any diff features in it.

seems you got what you wanted though :)

CatQuest: thanks, I'm quite happy of how I wrote it with the right usefulness/don't-make-me-use-my-brain-when-it's-not-needed mix
