        Cheezmo_: I agree!
      • CatQuest
darwin has some rant about beatport's use of "original mux" I'm sure :D
      • atj
      • The Bandcamp importer userscript strips it from track titles
      • CatQuest
        mix not mux
      • CatQuest sigh
      • Cheezmo_
But why would you think that a CD release would have a track name pulled from Beatport? Not familiar with the label, etc. but if that is a thing, I guess it is meaningless in this cases.
      • Rotab
imo having (original mix) on a dj-mixed track is a bit odd
      • CatQuest
i gues it means they dj-mixed the original mix and not the (more commonly known?) other mixed one or something?
      • atj
Cheezmo_: because James Zabiela created the mix from his music collection and then sent the titles to the label
      • CatQuest
        ooohhhh
      • atj
he's been DJ'ing digitally for years AFAIU
      • Rotab
CatQuest: yeah, my brain doesnt like that though
      • atj
CatQuest: I can find no references to any other mixes of that track
      • CatQuest
i guess it's some beatport track thing
      • Cheezmo_
^ well that kind of knowledge would be good for the edit comments, instead of just saying "original mix" should always be removed.
      • atj
        Cheezmo_: yes, fair comment
      • CatQuest
        I agree there
      • Hexadigital_ has quit
      • Zhele_ has quit
      • funny thing. some 10 years ago we definitely always always removed "(original mix)" fro mtracks. also a lot of other kinds of eti, such as "album version" or "extended version" (depending on were it was)
      • now i tent to move these to disambiguiations
      • they do no harm there and can at best prevent wrong merges
      • speaking of which. this dj-mixed release should have some disambiguiation comments to that effoect
      • CatQuest adds some
      • atj
CatQuest: I was planning to add that after the edit went through
      • CatQuest
        oh no. sorry
      • CatQuest removes
      • atj
CatQuest: one of the tracks has been incorrectly linked to a non-djmixed recording
      • which is why I was waiting
      • oh, it's gone through
      • CatQuest: nevermind
      • CatQuest
I usually go on auto-pilot adding these. after some other releases I had edited where it turned otu that dj-mixed recording was merged int oregular ones. it was a real mess
      • exactly!
      • atj
sorry, didn't realise the edit had been applied :)
      • CatQuest
yea i assumed you had already fixed these recordings :D sorry
      • atj
      • _flow_ has quit
      • CatQuest
        thanks to chaban :D
      • atj
        thanks chaban, you're too efficient
      • CatQuest has a script that can batch-add comments to recordings. it's really usefull in these cases
      • Yes, that script is super useful
      • CatQuest
        yes!
      • chaban
I think we need a script for batch setting video attribute as well
      • atj
I always wondered how people added all those comments to recordings in dj mixes
      • CatQuest
chaban: i definitly definitly want that
      • i was thinking about if maybe this "set comments2 could be used to create one?
      • i poked reosarevok about it.. hmm I think he suggested asking loujine?
      • chaban
I was thinking about that too but I'm too much of a javascript noob
      • CatQuest has no idea either
      • CatQuest
loujine is the userscript hero. togther with jesus2099
      • atj
I'll have a look, no promises
      • CatQuest
        :o
      • we got another userscripthero here \o/
      • no promises :D
      • I still remember how you fixed discogs import script
      • atj
ROpdebee is a JS guru. His image dimensions userscript made me irrationally angry because it was very elegant but I didn't understand it.
      • CatQuest
I need to get you using BookBrainz, then i can get fixes there too
      • ooohhh?
      • atj
He did some really clever stuff where it only loads the images when they appear on your screen
      • Using promises and some APIs I'd never heard of :)
      • CatQuest
hm it probably wouldn't evne work on my old machine/browser :( well
      • atj
        Sorry, s/he/they
      • Making bad assumptions therer
      • CatQuest
ack why does toast titanioum hand indefinitly all of a sudden.. anyone know of whre to look for error logs on mac os?
      • ROpdebee
        pronouns are correct
      • CatQuest
yea. it too ksome time for me to learn the "they" thing. but i's become usual for me now. I still sometimes slip up (I use "the guy" or "the dude" but)
      • atj
        ROpdebee: thanks
      • CatQuest
ROpdebee: hi! cna i interest you in a BookBrainz?
      • CatQuest :D
      • ah. atj in the comotion, I think you forgot to copy over tracknames to recordings, eg https://beta.musicbrainz.org/recording/ebe74cb2...
      • wait I am stupid,it wasn't an autoedit
      • phunyguy has quit
      • reosarevok
atj: I possibly would leave it if it's on the cover - I would remove it if every track said (original mix) but I kinda assume they would not print it on one and only one?
      • But I didn't read the full convo, so maybe you explained it :D
      • I would certainly drop it from beatport albums
      • atj
reosarevok: my hypothesis is that it actually originated from Beatport as James Zabiela sourced the track from there
      • CatQuest
reosarevok: apparently the person doing the dj-mix just used some beatport mix and sent the names fo the recordings used to theri cd-creator
      • reosarevok
        Hmm
      • atj
        CatQuest: that's just my hypothesis
      • reosarevok
In that case, I'd abstain on that change :)
      • CatQuest
        or what atj said
      • reosarevok
Seems like it's going to pass anyway, so I don't need to though :D
      • CatQuest
the first thing "original mix" made me think of was indeed beatport so i don't think you're that off. maybe we cna ask the person?
      • atj
I honestly don't think the DJ really worried about the track titles, he just sent if off when he finished the mix
      • and they just came from the track metadata
      • CatQuest
        maybe we can ask him?
      • wouldn't hurt
      • atj
        I guess I could try
      • CatQuest
        👍
      • atj
He'll probably think I'm insane asking such an inane question
      • CatQuest
nah, they get asked all kinds of things.
      • you'll never know what artists and the ilk will reply.
      • reosarevok sighs
      • reosarevok
        "Complete Sonatas and Works"
      • Is that "Complete Sonatas and Other Works" or "Complete Sonatas and a Bunch of Works"
      • atj
        I'd say the former
      • reosarevok
I'd kinda expect so too, but I'm not sure!
      • I mean, as a non-purchaser it's kinda irrelevant
      • But it's weirdly ambiguous
      • reosarevok is bothered by weird shit
      • atj
reosarevok: as a native english speaker it would be quite weird if it wasn't the former
      • no context though
      • reosarevok
I guess it's meant to be "Complete Works for Violin and Piano, Including All the Sonatas"
      • Looking at the contents
      • ROpdebee
CatQuest> "nah, they get asked all kinds of things." I once sent an email to a random DJ to ask something about an artist they had one release with, so can confirm
      • atj
Cheezmo_: apologies if I was a bit of an arse during our discussion, I'm a bit tired and irritable today I think
      • CatQuest
        atj: rrrrrr pet pet
      • atj
CatQuest: reminds me of this edit https://musicbrainz.org/edit/72710793
      • CatQuest purrrs
      • CatQuest
        atj: cool!
      • atj
yeah, props to bflaminio for that
      • CatQuest
        yea
      • atj
I honestly never even considered just emailing the artist
      • timbl has quit
      • chaban
I once asked an artist regarding some old P2P sourced release: https://musicbrainz.org/edit/67598988

      • atj
chaban: emailing the artist telling them someone downloaded their music from eDonkey :)
      • chaban
more than a decade ago :D
      • Cheezmo_
atj: I could make the same apology ;-) I've been fixing LFE delay on 5.1 mixes all morning and need a break!
      • CatQuest
        <3 this community
      • atj
I don't think so, you were reasonable throughout IMO :)
      • LFE = Low Frequence Effects ?
      • *Frequency
      • Cheezmo_
Yeah. There is a thread on the quadrophonic quad forum about how almost all 5.1 mixes on DVD Audio/SACD have the .1 channel delayed by 4ms and more due to the delay introduced by low pass filters not being compensated for. Sometimes the delay is such that it actually causes the bass to cancel out and be reduced!
      • atj
Interesting. So when the individual tracks are split out, the LPF causes a Nms delay to the signal and this isn't compensated for?
      • Seems odd that an LPF would cause such a big delay
      • CatQuest
I am reminded about how there was this thing that "hi-fidelity" equpment that was "so good" it sent out sounds that were inaudible to the hmna ear (but the infra/ultrasound *did* interference with the audible wavelenghts so there had to be modified stuff)
      • Cheezmo joined the channel
      • Cheezmo
Most engineers (as is recommended) send the LFE channel through a low pass filter (no sense sending high frequencies to a subwoofer). When the tracks are reassembled that should be compensated for if it introduced delay. I think modern software accounts for it but back during the DVD-Audio/SACD age, it was something an engineer would have to account for.
      • atj
So the delay was introduced by the LPF when the final mix was made?
      • mfl joined the channel
      • Cheezmo
The LFE is typically derived from the other channels so yeah, when that is being done.
      • crism has quit
      • Can read about it here if interested... https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/threads...

      • atj
Sounds interesting but requires a login unfortunately.
      • Cheezmo
Sorry, didn't know it wasn't public.
      • atj
I guess they used digital LPFs? Would you expect Nms delay with analogue filters?
      • Cheezmo_ has quit
      • moufl has quit
      • mfl is now known as moufl
      • Cheezmo
Not sure. Actually I would have thought equally likely with analog.
      • atj
I may be completely wrong, but isn't an LPF quite simple? :)
      • CatQuest: when you look into audio phasing and stuff like that it's crazy complex
      • Cheezmo
I'm reading up on it on Wikipedia and there are mathematical symbols I haven't seen in decades.
      • atj
        lol
      • CatQuest
        hahaha
      • Cheezmo
I mean there are cutoff frequencies/slope, etc. and I'm sure the various choices made result in the various delays.
      • atj
I don't know enough to have a strong opinion, I was just under the impression that LPF/HPFs were some of the simplest audio effects
