Sorry if I'm disconnecting and reconnecting too much; we have 2 wi-fi hotspots in the house and one is malfunctioning (it won't let me access certain sites, namely MB)
I've spent maybe 10 hours adding this release, it's a bit concerning having it dangling with a vote against it

johtso
would be great to clear up the situation
2015-02-25 05615, 2015
reosarevok
I'd let it pass because that means the recordings can be reused for the series
2015-02-25 05620, 2015

(you can always remove it after that)

I felt like I had an idea of how things would hang together when using the structure of releases.. allowing things like grouping of recordings by using sub track numbers like 12.1, 12.2.. not sure how that would work with a series
2015-02-25 05625, 2015
reosarevok
Well, series have numbers
2015-02-25 05632, 2015
reosarevok
So you can add something as number 12.2 of a series
kepstin-laptop loves the numbers used in http://musicbrainz.org/series/0fda0386-cd02-422a-9baa-54dc91ea4771
2015-02-25 05619, 2015

that series is sorted in the correct order there, had to be done manually :)

Another thing that's bit distressing is that with the release approach I was able to tag all the tracks in picard and have them grouped into meaningful directories
I have a feeling that's completely impossible with something as loose as a recording series
2015-02-25 05610, 2015
johtso
hah, amazing

That I wouldn't know, since I don't tag, but it seems likely

I feel like there's maybe a bit of a middle ground sometimes when it comes to "the perfect right way to do it" vs. the pragmatic way that means I can actually get some benefit out of the work I'm putting into it and is the driving force behind the data actually getting entered in the first place
2015-02-25 05625, 2015
johtso
especially when it comes to higher level metadata of release/series etc.
2015-02-25 05626, 2015

tools that consume musicbrainz data don't understand the concept of a series

I think the releasiness of the project could also be argued. The fact that it is a project that has curated contributions from various sources with many contributions being the first time a recording has been digitized/made available/released. The way that the website is structured also conveys a sense of a "finished product" (a release?).
2015-02-25 05658, 2015
reosarevok shrugs
2015-02-25 05624, 2015
reosarevok
It feels better as a series, but I definitely wouldn't remove/downvote the release without adding it as a series at the same time, seems interesting to have
2015-02-25 05615, 2015
reosarevok
But of course I'm going to be the close to the most radical of the "database over taggers" people around since I like data for data's sake and I don't tag :)
2015-02-25 05640, 2015
johtso
yeah, I totally get that ethos
2015-02-25 05653, 2015
reosarevok
It does make sense though that if some small deviation is needed to ensure people are motivated to enter the data at all... oh well, slightly imperfect beats no data
2015-02-25 05624, 2015
reosarevok
Can't ask for everyone to be data crazies :)
2015-02-25 05657, 2015
reosarevok
At least in this case all the tracks are collected as a whole and actually downloadable, so it's not like some example we saw a couple days ago
2015-02-25 05600, 2015
johtso
I'd say having spend countless hours entering data for all sorts of obscure recordings and [someone's mother]s etc. makes me a "data crazy" ;)
2015-02-25 05617, 2015
reosarevok
Which was a "release" for one of these "best X ever" lists
2015-02-25 05626, 2015
reosarevok
(where the list was just plain text)
2015-02-25 05639, 2015
reosarevok
So yeah, there's a releaseness about it :)
2015-02-25 05603, 2015
reosarevok
I dunno whether it would make more sense, given how it seems to be presented, to have per-month releases, though?
2015-02-25 05604, 2015
reosarevok shrugs
2015-02-25 05607, 2015
reosarevok
Not a big issue
2015-02-25 05626, 2015
johtso
heh, eeking out the releasiness bit by bit :)
2015-02-25 05643, 2015
reosarevok
haha
2015-02-25 05651, 2015
johtso
per month releases is exactly what I'm doing
2015-02-25 05608, 2015
reosarevok
Oh, ok, since you said 12.1, 12.2 I thought that was a yearly release you had in mind :)
2015-02-25 05615, 2015
reosarevok
Well, I mean, in a way it's a release as much as a soundcloud set
2015-02-25 05622, 2015
johtso
and that's just about the limit of a unit of work before I go completely off the rails :P
2015-02-25 05633, 2015
reosarevok
I've seen those added as releases, so, yeah, whatever, go ahead :p
(we filter it before it gets there but there have been 6 or 7 spam comments by now...)

johtso: well, I'm not going to approve it, since it's against the rules to approve controversial edits, but I voted with my reasoning
2015-02-25 05635, 2015
reosarevok
That's all I can do for now :)
2015-02-25 05654, 2015
johtso
oh right, you can't make normal votes!
2015-02-25 05612, 2015

I can, I can

I did :)

2015-02-25 05617, 2015

oohhh right, sorry, didn't see the count update :)

reosarevok: one totally unrelated question, when you mentioned using series for videos earlier, what kind of videos?
2015-02-25 05645, 2015

(or well, assume they will if they're willing to pay to get it in :p)

johtso
ah, so standard music videos
2015-02-25 05626, 2015
reosarevok
For some reason, recently they have started doing video series a lot
2015-02-25 05640, 2015
johtso
because I've been wanting to relate recordings to a music television series
2015-02-25 05649, 2015
reosarevok
(one minute a cappellas for different rappers, stuff like that)
2015-02-25 05601, 2015
johtso
not sure if that's something that fits into musicbrainz..
2015-02-25 05611, 2015
reosarevok
Heh. Yeah, we don't have anything like that right now, unless a soundtrack work fits
2015-02-25 05629, 2015
reosarevok
(But that's a proper soundtrack/score/whatever rather than "stuff that got played on")
2015-02-25 05643, 2015
reosarevok
For releases there's the IMDB rel, but for recordings I don't think so
2015-02-25 05657, 2015
reosarevok forgets what we have, there are so many rels
2015-02-25 05611, 2015

would be a nice addition I think, as some television broadcasts have unique performances by artists that seem like good things to have in a music database
2015-02-25 05650, 2015
reosarevok
I guess it depends what you're thinking about
2015-02-25 05604, 2015

Stuff like Top of the Pops or all these Name Surname shows in the US?
2015-02-25 05617, 2015
johtso
one example off the top of my head would be The Old Grey Whistle Test
2015-02-25 05648, 2015
johtso
but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of audio only release of recordings from there (but then again probably not exhaustive)
2015-02-25 05659, 2015
reosarevok googles what that is :p
2015-02-25 05631, 2015

another example would be Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest series where he gets various folk musicians onto the show to perform for/with him
