merging needs at least two releases to merge, so you need to click "merge release" on another release

the artist in japanese stores is tagged like スーパーカー instead of the typeset SUPERCAR

so the files from iTunes ended up having those tags and Picard wasn't finding the releases

the recordings guidelines say extra title info should normally stay in the recording title

and yeah, depends what it means - if it's saying "the 1999 re-recording of this song" or "the live version recorded in 1999" then it should be in the disambig comment on the recording, imo.

it's only live info that goes in the disambiguation

it’s also version info that doesn’t appear on the official tracklist that goes there
