To me it’s like “great, where are the answers to these questions”
      • reosarevok
Well, it's either that or in the TOC
      • hawke
Yeah, but that makes the TOC a mile wide and a mile long
      • reosarevok
There should be a place to quickly check the questions without having to find them in between the text
      • So either you do it on the TOC and use it as a "shortcut", or you do this, really
      • Freso joined the channel
      • zas_, bitmap: someone's reporting in -users that Picard has issues loading releases where some cover art has no type set
      • Is that known?
      • SultS
I’m more put off by the TOC now being on the left side… it took less space on the right side (but I wasn’t here the whole time and maybe somebody didn’t like it there :))
      • hawke
SultS: how’d it take less space on the right side?
      • SultS
      • bitmap
reosarevok: it's possibly fixed by https://github.com/musicbrainz/picard/commit/83... ? not sure
      • hawke
Ah. yeah, I like that one.
      • kepstin-laptop joined the channel
      • SultS: http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/index.php?title=Edi... is our starting point though
      • SultS
        oh god :D
      • kepstin-laptop
hmm, looks like my Character artist type RFV passed.
      • hawke goes to quickly veto it!
      • hawke
SultS: yeah. That’s what I was trying to fix. :-)
      • SultS
well, maybe now it’s ok to move back to the right side then :)
      • hawke
I don’t get why the TOC is so indented… :-/
      • Anyway, here it is on the right…
      • SultS
        certainly an improvement
      • hawke
That’s what I thought. It feels to me like the answers are so short that you’re basically scanning a list of questions anyway, so there isn't much benefit to the TOC
      • beyond maybe very general topics
      • reosarevok: do you might if I remove the collapsible headings?
      • SultS
collapsing one line of text seems weird as well
      • hawke
If the 'expand' were right next to the heading it might work, but it’s way off on the side. :-/
      • Freso joined the channel
      • reosarevok
Most of the answers are quite longer than one line, heh
      • (which is probably why they're so bad, on the other hand)
      • But yeah, feel free, the page is going to be very similarly useless with and without expanding headers :p
      • hawke
        hehe
      • Freso joined the channel
      • SultS: I changed the tone a bit away from that Q/A format.
      • (in that now the questions don’t refer back to the previous answers)
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
ZaphodBeeblebrox has changed the topic to: Developers: #musicbrainz-devel | Latest Release: http://blog.musicbrainz.org/?p=2491 | IRC Log: http://chatlogs.musicbrainz.org/ | 🐾
      • hawke
Except for “OK, so that's what we're supposed to do, now how do I do it”
      • No idea what to do with that Q/A
      • SultS
that question makes no sense looking at the previous answer
      • what to do after reading about how to vote?
      • use picard
      • afaik Picard doesn’t allow voting
      • btw, in my browser when there were lines between the questions, I saw less empty space than now
      • hawke
That one kinda references the whole previous FAQ which goes over the general concept of editing.
      • Is the empty space good or bad?
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
[19:22] <warp> dolphinling: right, but where do the releases go which are NOT official and NOT bootleg? what are they?
      • ooother??
      • SultS
it’s inefficient use of space, so bad
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
        hmm
      • hawke
SultS: well, it can be good if it helps separate the questions.
      • But I just cleaned up some extra whitespace.
      • reosarevok
SultS: the lines are an eyesore though
      • If we can do it without lines but with less whitespace that'd be good :p
      • SultS
the lines separated the questions before
      • hawke
I think the lines are OK.
      • SultS
doesn’t have to be lines, just less wasted space :P
      • with less space, it should be still obvious where one question ends and another starts
      • reosarevok
The lines are OK if we want people to run away from the page
      • Which as nikki said, might be the best thing with the current content, but :p
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
yea I wouldn't expect the contence to be to the right
      • OK, so that's what we're supposed to do, now how do I do it?
      • The first thing to do is to download the MusicBrainz Picard Tagger. "
      • yep that's broken
      • "Browse though the releases to see if you find obvious mistakes: releases listed twice, "
      • that should probably NOt be in there, considering that we have duplicates for releasedates and such now
      • also "releases with missing tracks,"
      • this is why we get noobs adding "missing" bonus tracks to old releases
      • it should probably say "missing releases /singles" links to composers/writers/performers (link to explain hw to ad ars)
      • and like "urls"
      • and "If you submit a CD and the Disc ID is not found, and the server says that a matching title exists, but the track counts don't match, you may have found an error."
      • it's much more likly that the person is seeign a release with less tracks rather than an error release
      • also to remove all talk of freedb imports
      • and not just talk about cd's but include vinyl/caassette
      • etc
      • Yes. Select all releases of a given type (e.g. "Live, Official") via the check-boxes, then enter a "Batch Operation" applying the appropriate release attributes to all selected releases."
      • man I miss batch operation
      • man this faq is old
      • reosarevok
It is, because it's horrible and nobody wanted to touch it :p
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
what we *need* to do is have a brainstorm and talk about what *actual* frequently asked questions are there
      • and answer them. wile the entire thing and start a new
      • (or put it in glorius history9
      • aah this movie is good, the cat came back, don't we have a server named baron?
      • reosarevok
        We do
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
i always thought the big white cat is baron but he is muta
      • hawke
“I understand editing. What do I do next?” that seems better than “So that’s what we’re supposed to do”
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
        good hawke ,that's a start
      • but now I need to go to bed if I am to do all the things I need to do tomorrow
      • soon this nightmare is at an end and everything will be normal again
      • hawke
I don’t like that “How do I know if a release is wrong” question.
      • Actually that whole section kinda sucks

      • There, I think the FAQ is now free of completely obsolete or wrong advice.
      • reosarevok
        You mean you removed it?
      • :)
      • hawke
        hah
      • No.
      • I think it’s pretty good now, actually. Care to review?
      • Still could use some stuff about recordings and relationships, but…
      • reosarevok
        heh
      • "Look up your favorite artist and see if their name is spelled correctly"
      • I know that probably was there before, but :p
      • jcazevedo joined the channel
      • "Look up your favorite artist and see if the info is correct and nothing is missing" maybe? :p
      • hawke
It was. Heh, I suppose we have a lot more than name now, don’t we.
      • Hmm, I should add something about subscriptions there too.
      • kepstin-laptop has left the channel
      • Some of those obvious mistakes don’t seem all that common. Can’t think of when I’ve seen a release with tracks listed twice.
      • reosarevok
        I have (a duplicate medium :p)
      • But yeah
      • They're mistakes for a different age
      • hawke
what are 'common' mistakes? Missing label/barcode I know is one.
      • reosarevok
An age of automatic freedb imports, probably :p
      • hawke
        yep. :-D
      • reosarevok
Missing label/barcode, feat. in titles, wrong caps (although I'm not sure I want to say that or they'd "fix" non-English ones...)
      • hawke grumbles about the Japanese Exception.
      • And of course works and relationships and whatever if they're feeling like it
      • hawke
Yeah, I don’t quite feel like tackling relationships. :-D
      • But I guess saying 'add the complete credits' won’t hurt.
      • reosarevok
Well, link to How to Use the Relationship Editor and that's it :p
      • hawke
oh, we have one of those? ;-)
      • reosarevok
        bitmap wrote it
      • (he was going to put pictures in it but he never did :p)
      • hawke
Well, good call for linking to that.
      • HibiscusKazeneko
        hawke: What's to grumble about?
      • there was talk about extending it to Korean a while back
      • but the proposed guidelines were never implements
      • implemented*
      • hawke
HibiscusKazeneko: The silly “all caps is always allowed” thing.
      • HibiscusKazeneko
It's not silly; it's artist intent
      • hawke
        Not always.
      • reosarevok
Well, it's supposed to be done if other places like websites etc agree with it, right? In which case it does sound like intent
      • HibiscusKazeneko
      • hawke
I agree with being more lenient on artist intent but not a blanket “It’s japanese so it’s obviously artist intent”
      • HibiscusKazeneko
right, mostly; there are cases where graphic design on cover art can trip up a reader
      • I run into it a lot
      • warp
it's not really about artist intent, the japanese just use the latin script differently.
      • HibiscusKazeneko
        true
      • I have a few releases where websites list titles in all caps but the cover art does not
      • also note the inconsistency between the cover art and listing for the "Singles History" releases on http://www.universal-music.co.jp/the-alfee/disc...
      • hawke
        Yep.
      • To me that seems essentially the same as releases anywhere else.
      • Not seeing the extreme consistency. :-)
      • HibiscusKazeneko
They do tend to be fairly consistent with the cover art
