How do I set two artists for one song?
      • I saw a number of things on the wiki, from "create a new artist called <artist1> & <artist2>" to "Add the first one as the artist, but name it "<artist1> & <artist2>""
      • warp
oldtopman: you can do that with artist credits
      • oldtopman: https://musicbrainz.org/doc/How_to_Use_Artist_C... describes how you can do that (hopefully those instructions aren't too outdated).

Grooveshark Found Guilty of Massive Copyright Infringement
      • CallerNo6
The general idea is oldtopman for some [artist1]<and>[artist2] situations, you'd create a new artist "artist1 & artist2". If the collaboration is fairly stable, like Simon & Garfunkel.
      • derwin
      • " The court was presented with piles of evidence that Grooveshark not only knew about infringing content on its site (who wouldn’t), but willfully uploaded infringing content onto its servers and ordered employees to do the same or face penalties. "
      • CallerNo6
Since copyright is magic, I understand this to mean "Grooveshark was found guilty of practicing magic incorrectly"
      • kepstin_
hey, incorrectly practising magic can be very dangerous.
      • kepstin
get nasty explosions, summons from parallel universes, washbasins falling from the sky, etc.
      • CallerNo6
If Grooveshark did those things, then they must pay. Pay a terrible price.
      • (and they should be forced to pick up all the washbasins and haul them to the dump)
      • kepstin supposes he has to go rewatch http://www.crunchyroll.ca/yokuwakaru-gendai-maho now (It has the official english title "Modern Magic Made Simple")
      • kepstin
they went all-out in the tagline on the back of the dvd box, "In a world where magic is like computer code... Koyomi still hasn't learned Basic"
      • CallerNo6
hmm. 13 episodes on hulu. is that all there was?
      • yeah, guess so if WP is correct
      • ah, but no Ping Pong Club? boo.

      • derwin
        he is around, but..
      • in and out?
      • oldtopman
CallerNo6: The collaboration isn't really stable at all - the only time I've seen the two together is on the one song.
      • Still appropiate to make the new artist?
      • warp
Skud: there's two in https://github.com/mayhem/musicbrainz-server/bl... , both should work.
      • (er, I probably should've linked to https://github.com/metabrainz/musicbrainz-serve... , though it doesn't really matter for this particular question)

Anyone up for helping acomplete MusicBrainz Picard noob?
      • Skud
        thanks Musicoligist :)
      • Musicoligist
        ?
      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: no, that's what artist credits are for. You can join multiple existing artists with whatever "join phrase" is appropriate.
      • If the How_To that warp linked to is confusing (it's a little out of date), I'd be happy to answer questions
      • Musicoligist
erm - guess noob in IRC as well then?
      • CallerNo6
        another tragic tabbing accident
      • Musicoligist
really - anyone here with helpful input would be most appreciated
      • CallerNo6
Musicoligist: I might be able to help if it's a simple question. Otherwise, somebody will be along to answer everntually.
      • oldtopman
Musicoligist: Depends on what you need, but I'm fairly new myself.
      • Musicoligist
fisrt of all whats with the cryptic messages?
      • don't people come here for help?
      • is that not the idea?\
      • oldtopman
CallerNo6: Artist credits = artist tab under "Recording Details"?
      • Musicoligist: Huh? Just ask!
      • CallerNo6
Musicoligist: it's easy to forget that not everybody is in on every in-joke etc. What's your question?

k - so I have album - lets call it x - x has ten songs but nine are picked up and the other has the little music symbol...... bare with me
      • the song with the symbol is the right song but it doesnt seem to like the length.....
      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: artist credits (in this context) are a way to show an artist's name as it appears on a specific release, if there's slight variation. It also lets you link multiple artists' names into one credit.
      • Skud has left the channel
      • Musicoligist
so i have edited the track length in mpTrim to the correct length but it still gets the symbol - how can i fix this?
      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: so I'll walk you through one. go to http://beta.musicbrainz.org/release/0b029e80-bf..., lemme know when you're there
      • oldtopman
        Alright, there.
      • Musicoligist
right - so this is the test page - it was down yesterday and I was gonna have a look - anyways - im there
      • CallerNo6
now click the "edit" tab, which will take you to the "release editor" page for that release
      • Musicoligist
erm - im not logged in
      • CallerNo6
Musicoligist: oh, you can follow along if you'd like but this is an answer to oldtopman's question
      • oldtopman
        CallerNo6: Alright, I'm in now.
      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: okay, next to the release artist field there's a button called "edit". (in the how_to it's called ">>" but it's been improved)
      • click that
      • Musicoligist
how can see ALL the chat in IRC so I'm not rudely interupting?
      • oldtopman
Musicoligist: Just wait until someone talks to you - usually they'll say your name, and that line of text will be red (like this one).
      • CallerNo6: Gotcha.
      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: that gives you the interface for editing what MB calls "artist credits". You can do one of two things:
      • oldtopman
Add a new credit, set the join phrase, and add the new artist?
      • CallerNo6
1: you can change the artist's name as it appears on the release. This would be for minor things like a middle initial or "Jim" vs "James" or something.
      • oldtopman
Can I save to this album? (it's a test album, right?)
      • CallerNo6
You can save as long as you haven't added a real artist, because it will show up in the real artist's discography.
      • 2. you've already figured out two :-)
      • oldtopman
CallerNo6: That makes a ton of sense. Thanks for explaining it to me :D
      • CallerNo6
        Any time
      • Okay, Musicologist: you don't actually have to wait until you're addressed. We talk over each other all the time. If there's more than one conversation going on, you can address the person you're speaking with directly.
      • Musicoligist
don't wanna upset any1 with bad etiquette is all
      • CallerNo6
Nah. This isn't that kind of channel :-)
      • Musicoligist
        well still...
      • ummm - do I need to explain my issue again?
      • CallerNo6
fine. if you insist on being polite, I won't try to talk you out of it :-P
      • Musicoligist
        k so see previous message
      • CallerNo6
hmm. I don't understand your question (which probably means I'm not the right person to answer it). What "symbol"?
      • Musicoligist
        the musical note
      • one song missing
      • song 10 stays in unmatched files
      • appears under title though with the musical note
      • how to fix?
      • oldtopman
Is there a way to manually link a song to a musicbrainz id?
      • I know I do that often enough with beet.
      • Musicoligist
lol - is this still me being spoken to here?
      • CallerNo6
Musicoligist: try dragging your song from the middle pane directly onto the song in the right pane
      • oldtopman
Musicoligist: Nope, this is me interrupting you with another question of my own.
      • Musicoligist: Actually, it was. My bad :P
      • Musicoligist: I was wondering if you could manually set a musicbrainz id to a song - forcing a match, if you will.

drag and drop - ty very very much - and who would have thought htis conversation about such a small issue would be so "interesting"
      • :)
      • CallerNo6
Musicoligist: do double check that it really /is/ the same song, of course.
      • Musicoligist
        gotcha
      • thanks again <CallerNo6>
      • CallerNo6

      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: do you mean that you want to manually enter tags?
      • oldtopman
CallerNo6: No, I thought it was relevant to musicologist's problem. Nevermind.
      • CallerNo6
        ah, gotcha

      • Oh. Shame on me. I used the terms "middle" and "right" pane, when of course that's only in the default layout.
      • Sorry, world.
      • oldtopman idly wonders how long it will take his album edits to be approved
      • ah, that I can kinda answer
      • edits go into a queue to be voted on. if you get three unanimous votes, your edit will pass or fail. if not, it will pass in 7 days if no=0 or no<yes.
      • so worst case scenario, 7 days.
      • in some circumstances, you can come to this channel and ask for votes.
      • like, "hey, I'm not sure if this is correct... can somebody check it out?"
      • or, "hey, this edit needs to pass in order to then do this other edit. can somebody help me speed it up?"
      • oldtopman
        Ah, I see.
      • I'm in no rush to get it approved, but any extra eyes would be appreciated: https://musicbrainz.org/release/69eaf4e2-3b7b-4...
      • I think this is only my third release or so, so I'm just starting to get the hang of things.
      • CallerNo6
oldtopman: normally we "fix" the capitalization to be consistent with English title case (e.g. 'This Is the TItle of My Thingy').
      • Exception: we don't "fix" it if it seem intentional. In this case, it seem intentional :-)
