      • lucifer
you can't have free flow conversations.
      • you need to always create a thread.
      • reosarevok
        Ugh
      • yvanzo
aerozol, lucifer: About the Discord bridge, please make the shutdown button accessible to the whole team in case of emergency since some people are worried about it. :)
      • mayhem
which might just be a dealbreaker for us.
      • reosarevok
Isn't that what the forum is for?
      • lucifer
they did mention that they might add a irc mode in future though.
      • yvanzo
        Isn’t #metabrainz a very long thread?
      • lucifer
yes that is what they suggest.
      • create one thread pin it and just keep using it.
      • mayhem
maybe our communication style will evolve over time
      • rdswift
As long as when someone joins the thread they don't automatically start at the first message.
      • zas
        where are those bridges hosted?
      • lucifer
zas: i hosted them locally for test, i'll coordinate with you before i deploy on prod.
      • does anyone want to try rocket.chat?
      • it might allow both free flow and threads.
      • mayhem
if not too hard to setup...
      • lucifer
but i have never used it myself just met a mentor at the gsoc summit.
      • okay cool, i'll look into it too.
      • yvanzo
We could also self-host our own IRC bouncer such as thelounge.chat as an alternative to IRCCloud.
      • lucifer
indeed but i think just hearing IRC scares a lot of new contributors.
      • so a bridge to somewhere else would be nice.
      • monkey
        +1 to that
      • reosarevok
        > indeed but i think just hearing IRC scares a lot of new contributors.
      • Good. (?)
      • reosarevok shakes fist at sky
      • zas
if we have 90% of users on "alternative" it will have to be very reliable
      • lucifer
not necessarily reosarevok, i was told it by a very skilled student even today
      • reosarevok
lucifer: I was mostly kidding :)
      • mayhem
reosarevok: yes, it is clearly becoming a detriment.
      • aerozol
I do worry that we’ll move to a only slightly less annoying/off-putting service. But that’s where the bridge comes in. I totally get that we want a bit of a barrier for #metabrainz though
      • lucifer
        ah okay lol.
      • i personally love IRC but then i have IRCCloud.
      • mayhem hopes to leave 5 mins for the final topic
      • reosarevok
I do wonder how someone who cannot cope with IRC can cope with dev
      • But still :)
      • lucifer
        yes lets move on.
      • reosarevok
For non-dev MB user talk, it seems at least a no brainer
      • mayhem
        ok, summit talk time.
      • lucifer
i'll setup bridges and notify everyone so that they can test.
      • reosarevok
        Ok, final topic
      • mayhem: summit 2024
      • mayhem
we spent $17,783.35 on our summits last year. $1000 was the delhi summit, not including my airfare.
      • reosarevok
In which mayhem tries to convince us that it'll be cheap and good to go to India
      • mayhem
about $2k-$3k more than we would normally spend, but ok, not that a bad expense.
      • lucifer and I both did some estimates to see how much it would cost to do the summit in delhi.
      • we'd spent more in air fare, but less in hosting and if we hire a cook for the whole week, far less money while eating really well.
      • My estimate might be $3k-$5k higher, lucifer thinks we might save money.
      • either way, I think we can swing it since I think I can find some sponsors.
      • oh, speaking of with, for those of you who remember navap... he's officially down with sponsoring one person to go the summit for $1000.
      • monkey
        That's generous
      • mayhem
we are considering the following dates: week of sept 23 or sept 30.
      • we'll stick to those times because festivals in india or the gsoc summit.
      • aerozol
I don’t know if I can take another week off this year, but.... India.... hot damn
      • mayhem
weather will still be hot high 34C, lows 25C.
      • aerozol: should be much easier travel for you!
      • reosarevok
What's air quality at that time and does the fee cover lung cleaning? :p
      • But the food angle does look promising
      • lucifer
        air quality will be decent-ish.
      • mayhem
the plan is to have all of arrive at pretty much the same time, but leave people to spent extra time to visit more of india.
      • monkey
Having only done MeB summits in Barcelona myself, I'm definitely down
      • lucifer
it deteriorates usually mid-end of oct.
      • yvanzo
reosarevok: You can manage one week with an oxygen mask if needed ;)
      • mayhem
so, for next week, I'd like people to do two things: 1. Let me know if you want to go. 2. Which week you would prefer.
      • the air wasn't that bad in the end.
      • aerozol
A really great opportunity to meet some more of our India-based team in person too!
      • mayhem
I wore a mask twice for a couple of hours.
      • ok, time is up. lets pick this up next week.
      • yvanzo
I was just joking, didn’t think it would be needed at all.
      • jasje
        aerozol: goes both ways!
      • mayhem
        back to you reosarevok
      • reosarevok
        Ok, thanks everyone!
      • See you next week :)
      • </BANG>
      • mayhem: do you want to keep the summit topic then?
      • aerozol
Mmm, reosarevok knows how to bang
      • lucifer
i think we can keep all the topics.
      • yvanzo
MonkeyPython: It’s usually 50% but we can enable any language in the test instance on demand.
      • monkey
Just to be able to finally meet lucifer in person I'm in for the India summit :)
      • jasje
        i was at </B>
      • lucifer
        hehe :D
      • aerozol
        :P
      • reosarevok
lucifer: but then it looks like I forgot them! :D
      • ok, ok

      • jasje
wait lucifer hasn't been to barcelona?
      • lucifer
        nope visa issues
      • jasje
        oww
      • every summit?
      • aerozol
*issues with the visa issuing department
      • lucifer
yeah, 3 times in a row now.
      • Kioiokiokio
as a new contributor to this project and this being my first time in the irc , i thought it was a cool , just saying ...... btw this entire public meeting thing every week is great . awesome community :)
      • aerozol
      • Kioiokiokio: welcome! Sorry if your earlier question didn’t get answered? Often everyone is busy
      • jasje
        lucifer: condolences, i feel ya
      • monkey
        Welcome Kioiokiokio
      • jasje
        hello kioiokiokio\
      • (very tough to write)
      • lucifer
zas: which servers can i deploy the bridges on?
      • Kioiokiokio
i've been to many open source projects before but have neveerrrr seen such a fun , interactive community to work with . looking forward to wroking with you in the future ...
      • zas
they can be on a standalone server right?
      • Kioiokiokio
jasje: was having some trouble creating nickname so just wronte something random in the nickname section and this one got accepted
      • zas
        lucifer: you can use quest
      • lucifer
        awesome thanks
      • jasje
Kioiokiokio: haha, happens to the best of us. No worries
      • Kioiokiokio: what project interests you the most?
      • Kioiokiokio
well i am primarily from the ml tech stack so python has been my primary language for some time now . currenlty exploring the projects in your organisation and primarily contributing to picard and its plugins .
      • mayhem
        ML, picard? hmmm.
      • there is this project we want to do, but its a tricky one.
      • lucifer
aerozol: hi! around for a few minutes?
      • mayhem
        BPM detection in music.
      • aerozol
lucifer: yup, just give me a minute to reply to a YIM app question from earlier
      • bitmap
aerozol: hehe, good luck to whoever has to parse that sentence though
      • twodoorcoupe has quit
      • Kioiokiokio
mayhem : sounds intersting . how would you use that the BPM though ? as a classiifcation or recognition metric for any new or unknown music sample ?
      • aerozol
pranavkonidena_: jasje: app looks great! (I obviously can’t check the interaction from the video, but thanks for adding swipe!) Just a couple of things that I can see from a quick check:
      • - Stats: typo remains: ( atleast! ) should be (at least!)
      • - Final screen has a ‘unsupported symbol’ icon after 2024, and if we could please make those social channel mentions into links
      • mayhem
there are many uses, but if we can get BPM data, then I would include BPM support in LB-radio: https://listenbrainz.org/explore/lb-radio/
      • aerozol
        - no share buttons but not sure if that’s just because there wasn’t time
      • jasje
aerozol: yeah those features are still missing
      • aerozol
        jasje: all good
      • jasje
aerozol: so the problem with share is
      • any parsing library that converts from svg to png is bad on android
      • aerozol
mayhem: kioiokiokio: ooh BPM. There will be some very happy DJ’s out there (who will start using Picard to tag their libraries). Hard one though
      • jasje
due to the sheer size of the svg we get from server
      • mayhem
yeah, which is why we haven't tackled it.
      • aerozol
mayhem: imagine all the seed investment offers you will get if we use LM for *anything* haha
      • jasje
aerozol: and so, We still unsure on share button
      • Kioiokiokio
mayhem : So basically you would want a script or a model to which you pass a audio sample , say a 3 minute song and you are returned with the avg . bpm for that song? then you could usee that data any way you liked
      • jasje
we can still screen shot the screen and share it
      • aerozol
kioiokiokio: fair warning, we hassle LLM on the regular! But where it’s good it’s great, obviously
      • mayhem
yes, but.... Kioiokiokio. the general algorithm for this is to convert the audio into frequency domain (using FFT or so) and then in freq domain, find peaks to find the beats.
      • aerozol
jasje: all good. For the app this year I assume we’re just happy to get something out
      • mayhem
problem is the peak finding is rather tricky. a 120bpm track could be confused with a 60bpm track and a 180bpm track.
      • and there are algorithms out there for doing this, we dont need to reinvent the wheel either.
      • ideally we would get 3 different algorithms to do the same task and if they disagree, have them vote.
      • or we could just go cheesy and make it fully manual.
      • have the user select the "essential portion" of a song and then press a button on a down beat.
      • not exactly ML tho
      • jasje
aerozol: yeah, ive got time for a few days ill prolly brush things up myself if I don't get distracted
      • yvanzo
        Updating MB beta servers…
      • reosarevok
        Thanks yvanzo
      • Kioiokiokio
mayhem : so you are suggesing either an ensemble or like a voting classifier for ml algos at beat determination in case they disagree by a large margin , else if they predict each other closely , we could go with the actual results . this does sound like an interesting project , even with refernce it its usage in picard . I think i might look into
      • this more closley over the week and get back to you on this in the next meet ,next monday . hopefully will be done with my other pr by then as well .
      • mayhem
        cool!
      • if we can use two off shelf beat detectors and possibly create on ourselves, if you're keen to get really into it, this would be stellar.
      • Pratha-Fish
Finally, a reasonable ML project at MeB :P
      • Kioiokiokio
yeah , i can look into that as well . this is sounding rather intersting actually .
      • mayhem
it is, but it would be reinventing the wheel.
