It was better before they (and other cryptocurrency stuff) existed.

Wow that's pretty huge. We'll miss AB!
      • mayhem
I really like the AB logo, I'll miss that. Maybe we can re-use it for something else later.

"Remove AB support from Picard."- oh well, we basically just released that :( but since removing LOCs is my favourite development activity I'll at least enjoy the task

I’m going to go get ready for my jab now. 💉

outsidecontext: do you have any data about how many people are using the submission tool?
      • which data are you pulling back out of AB at the moment? Any feedback on how "good" it is?
      • outsidecontext
        alastairp: no
      • for pulling back data there is the https://github.com/metabrainz/picard-plugins/tr...
      • alastairp
this is one of the key things that we're coming to a decision on - much of the data, especially the highlevel stuff isn't great, and although we've got some infrastructure for improving this, people haven't contributed as we had hoped, or we need better data for training these kind of algorithms
      • Lotheric_
mayhem, as an outsider, I think it's good news to focus on a project rather than have too many projects on MeB's plate.
      • so kudos for taking, I'm sure a tough decision
      • mayhem
        much appreciate the feedback, Lotheric_
      • Lotheric_ is now known as Lotheric
      • alastairp
part of our current thinking for for this doc that we're putting together is to take 4 or 5 steps back to start working out how to collect good data
      • atj
I've been submitting AB info for every track I've tagged in Picard
      • outsidecontext
mostly it is getting the high level mood / genre and lowlevel bpm + key values. I always found the genre no working great, mood maybe a bit better but I personally never cared about. BPM was always assumed to be better
      • atj
but I think most people won't know what it is or does
      • alastairp
and in the future, if we have good data, perhaps we can come back to it
      • Freso
I’m sad to see AB go right after we finally got the similar-recording to help with identify potential merge targets and wrongful merges. :( Oh well.
      • outsidecontext
atj: yes, agreed. I think the submission was mostly for those who knew about what AB does and is and often did AB submission anyway
      • alastairp
BPM is pretty good, but not completely accurate, and so you may get something wrong but not know it's wrong
      • again, we have some ideas about how we can improve this (and some direct plans to integrate into picard, so I suspect I'll be talking to you about this soon too)
      • Freso: this data will all still be around, so there's a chance that it can still be used for this
      • mayhem
Freso: there is better similar recording data being generated right now. no loss there.
      • Freso
Anyway. They just called me and want me to get jabbed even sooner than the scheduled time, so so much for taking some time to just slowly get ready for the jab. 😂 Catch you later!
      • outsidecontext
yes. the important part for the majority of picard users would be a way to get this kind of data, especially I think mood and bpm are interesting
      • mayhem
        alastairp: monkey : NOMS?
      • alastairp
        yes pleaes
      • mayhem
        Ready!
      • atj
I think adding playback functionality to Picard and getting users to actually use it is going to be challenging on multiple levels.
      • akshaaatt
I think the mobile app can be handy as well for such things. We will have a media player soon in the MB app but currently it is of low priority for me, at least. Based on the requirements I think we can decide on its functionality.

      • mayhem
        yvanzo: zas is afk today.

      • lucifer is back
      • lucifer
i read the doc briefly, sounds good.
      • mayhem
there is a lot more to flesh out, but you get the overall idea.
      • let me know if you have questions -- I felt kinda bad that you weren't in the meeting.
      • lucifer
sure will do. no worries :D
      • do you want to discuss the recording similarity index now? the csv files are in /home/robert on michael.
      • monkey
lucifer: also when you have a minute, i'm keen on getting the LB feed page working again. It seems to work in beta; anything I can help with to fix prod?
      • lucifer
oh i wasn't aware its broken
      • monkey
I'm not sure what is broken but I noticed that last week
      • lucifer
        looking into it
      • its also deployed on beta iirc so that would explain why it works on beta
      • monkey
Yep, I got to about that point :)
      • Anything I can help with?
      • alastairp
      • mayhem
        lol
      • lucifer
don't think so. its backend change so probably mayhem or alastairp need to look at it.
      • alastairp
        looking
      • monkey
        Thank you !
      • mayhem
        hmmm.
      • What if we recycle the AcousticBrainz logo for BrainzPlayer? Still fits!
      • so, I decided to see how easy electron really is....
      • turns out -- very!
      • if you have linux, does that work for you? does it show LB login page?
      • alastairp
hah, that could have very easily gone either of two ways...
      • lucifer: I added some comments on the PR
      • mayhem
lucifer: does that work for you?
      • akshaaatt
Nice mayhem! That opens up the LB website as an app for me
      • mayhem
very good. that was super easy.
      • akshaaatt
Sounds great! Do we see a brainzplayer software coming soon?
      • mayhem
not sure what it will take to get the actual brainzplayer to work there, but that may not be important.
      • well, possibly.
      • one of the realizations I had was it would be near impossible for us to get people to switch from their current player to have brainzplayer be their daily driver music player.
      • akshaaatt
        Right
      • mayhem
people are very engaged with their players and are not likely to switch to something that doesn't have gapless playback and a lot of niceties.
      • so, perhaps the goal is to have BrainzPlayer be the app that is embedded in LB with the goal of being a discovery player.
      • akshaaatt
        Cool!
      • mayhem
but, we want to display data in players about what is currently playing. All of the MB data for a track should be there. The feature to submit tagsratings/genres/moods. the "support this artist" button.
      • so, I am pondering if we should have an electron based app that someone can open on their desktop that displays the MB data in this window and updates when the user starts playing a new track.
      • lucifer
mayhem: yes it opens for me.
      • akshaaatt
How does the support this artist button work? Is that an actual payment or something like a like button?
      • mayhem
this way people can keep their existing player, but still have a page that displays relevant metadata.
      • lucifer: great!
      • for the former.
      • akshaaatt
        Cool
      • mayhem
MB has "patronage" links for where users can support an artist.
      • I want to start a campain to get more of those links into MB.
      • and then when a user listens to a track, we can see if the patronage link is there, and if so, show the button.
      • akshaaatt
I think the idea works well
      • BrainzGit
        [bookbrainz-site] 14MonkeyDo opened pull request #776 (03master…bs4-tweaks): Bootstrap4 migration tweaks https://github.com/metabrainz/bookbrainz-site/p...
      • lucifer
alastairp: updated the PR, can you please take a look again?
      • mayhem
and then send the user to where the artist would like them to go. this gives the artist 100% control and we take nothing. the artist gets to decide if they want to take bitcoin donations, patreon, or have a merch store.
      • akshaaatt
Sounds like the ideal thing to do👌
      • mayhem
        hopefully.

But does this mean that I should not continue to submit?
